UC Berkeley Fall 2020: Transfer Waitlist Thread

If I don’t get accepted I’ll be going to UCI

Someone wrote
“Hello! Will there be a transfer waitlist wave this week? Last week a representative said it would be either last weekend(sat+sun) or early this weekend.”

Representative Cameron replied
" there should be a few next week. All decisions will be final by the end of the month. We actually have not seen much of an impact in enrollments due to COVID 19"

Last sentence is so important. And based on his wording here there WILL BE NO EXTENSION after 30th. This means whatever else other reps are saying is just in case/vague.

  1. June 30th is the deadline to make or break. No extension
  2. COVID 19 didn't impact admissions as much as other counselors claimed it would've been. This isn't there blame, cause they are even surprised about it, and logically you would expect a different result.
  3. Waitlist admission depends on college. L&S is the biggest one and most likely to have a chance in a few open spots. Rip engineering.
  4. Low chance to update portal, even grades are iffy. This tells me they basically have a predetermined list now for waitlisted people, and they probably won't go back to reread/readjust. At least it would be very unlikely. Waitlist is based on a ranked system so if there is 4 spots, the top 4 people on that list gets admitted.

I think I am the only person in this thread who doesn’t have a back up option. Only applied to UCB, and was constantly assured by professors, chair and counselors that with my grades/ achievements/ story there will be no problem to get in. And then everyone I know from my CC who applied to the College of Environmental Design - got in. I already enrolled into summer and registered for fall classes in the CC, and will try to apply to CalPoly and some other Architecture schools next year. At least they will look at my portfolio and recommendations.

Good luck to all of you guys!

yah im on the admissions chat too and they said that waitlists depend on the college… so guess im out, homies.

it’s been fun

@beans456

Physics major here too and I’ll be going to UCSB as well if I don’t get in.

UCSB has some amazing undergraduate support. And it is still a top 10 school in the nation for Physics. It’s not Berkeley level but that is still really good. I would say it’s def the next best choice after Berkeley in California for Physics. Housing at UCSB also seems to be almost half of what it is in Berkeley. So at least we would be saving a lot of money! haha.

did L and S release their decision?

@ShmopyShoj Yay go physics majors lol. Glad we’ll be able to save some money if we end up going there. We may also be able to surf everyday…
From what I’ve heard, physics isn’t too competitive a major at Cal, if anything I’m pretty sure they still have a decent amount of space left so fingers-crossed? But yeah, at least it’s not the end of the world if we don’t get in, we’ll still be well off

@mimininja

That sucks to hear. That is honestly some really bad advice from your counselors and professors. I’m surprised to hear that anyone with some professional academic consulting experience would advise that

UCB is one of the most competitive schools in the nation. There are lots of stories of deserving students getting rejected every year. The college admissions decisions have a whole lot of funkiness to it and it is never clear predicting which way it will go.

Good luck next year. Apply to UCB again but don’t forget to apply to safety schools. I would also say that TAG’ing to a school for safety is almost a must if you’re a CCC student. UCSB and UCD can both be excellent safety schools via guranteed admission with TAG.

@beans456

UCSB , the campus and city, are absolutely gorgeous. It’s consistently ranked among the best campuses in the US and the campus even has their own beach that students can use. It’s hard to find a uni with a better location.

UCB’s physics program does rock though so that sucks. There is always grad school though if we don’t get in this year!

I think we will both be happy with our choice. I’ve only ever lived in the Bay so it’ll be exciting to live somewhere gorgeous and sunny.

Is anyone here an astrophysics major? Or just simply physics ?

I hear GSI make physics sets super painful on purpose. There are always some stories that girls cry together about their sets lol…

@mimininja
I’ve been stalking this thread since I got waitlisted to check for updates and I also thought I was the only one who did not have a back up plan. Especially for architecture we unfortunately don’t have many options and there really isnt such thing as a safety school for us :’( I also plan on majoring in Architecture and I am in the same exact situation as you! Are you also attending a CC in the Bay Area?

Best of luck to you! Hopefully we both get off the waitlist!!

@ShmopyShoj Yes, I’ve heard quite impressive things about both programs, so I won’t be too bummed (hopefully) if I get rejected and, like you said, there’s always grad school haha. I’ve also lived in the Bay my entire life and so the change would be nice!

I just wanted to say something someone said they aren’t taking many of the freshman waitlists. Keep in mind I have never seen them accept this many freshmen in a given year I think it was HEAVILY overenrolled because they figure they are guaranteed to get 4 years of revenue while over enrolling transfers would only guarantee 2 years of revenue where the first year may not include things like housing. I really want to see the stats, my counselor believes they heavily under-enrolled transfers this year. She is guessing that they are just going to cut the size of the transfer class and she is worried if this will be just the normal going forward.

@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS”

Considering this is two years in a row now that the waitlist has been neglected, I think she is right that this is the start of a trend.

3-5 years ago UCB had some of the highest acceptance rates in the nation off the WL. They were accepting about 50% of their WL students each year. Now it’s a wasteland lol.

A big part of that imo is the housing crisis going on in Berkeley right now. It is so hard to find housing at an affordable rate there. My friend had to settle for 750$ a month just to sleep in a living room and he was glad to have even have found that. Freshman could at least get pushed into dorm housing. Transfers can’t.

Not even the waitlist she thinks the transfer acceptance rate had a drop this year, from UCLA and Cal but at least UCLA took a bunch off the waitlist she is baffled how Cal decided against filling up the class with the waitlist.

@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS”

My counselors were shocked that UCB decided against utilizing the waitlist a lot this year too. If UCB is under-enrolling transfers in regular admission and then is deciding against filling it up with the wait list then I’d have to think it’s a purposeful decision to cut down on transfer admits as a whole. Like you said, UCLA cut down on transfers in regular admissions but then they used the WL to return to the normal rates. Berkeley chose against this and it signals to me that they just want to cut down on transfers in general.

If this is the case; this decision really discourages students to make transfer application to cal for the following years.

@givmethemail well no, as long as UCB exists anyone who thinks they qualify will apply always.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but this is where we stand:

  1. Waitlist admission is based on the particular college’s capacity, ex. L&S/Haas/etc.

  2. UCB isn’t utilizing “waves” in the traditional sense, instead going for a trickle approach

  3. All waitlist decisions are final

  4. You are still being considered until told otherwise
    *Waitlist admission ends June 30th 11:59pm

  5. The evening before the day your offered a spot your portal will have the “Decision/Admissions FAQs glitch.
