UC Berkeley Fall 2020: Transfer Waitlist Thread

Applied to L&S CS

California community college student
4.0 GPA (fulfill requirements although only went to cc for one year)
Job (internship) last summer, fall and through winter

@Trevor123456781 check this out: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

@shahjahaan thank you for the resource on transfer across UCs. From what I see on it, the data collected is for transfers in general, but not specifically for transfers who were offered acceptance from the waitlist. That was specifically what I was trying to figure out: how many waitlisted transfers were offered acceptance?
Thank you

@ā€œUCLA22CogSci/LINGCSā€ Hello, you can reach me at rootbeerqqqqq@gmail.com. Thank you!

i know it’s a dumb question but i’m gonna ask anyway, does being waitlist for UCB mean there’s a higher chance of getting accepted to UCLA? I heard about it from a couple of people, i know it’s dumb but a part of me hope it’s true. I’m just really torn about being waitlisted is all.

@mrsymple I doubt there’s any validity to that, but can’t hurt to hope…

Waitlisted: 2019,2020
Major: Statistics
Transfer Student from Community College
International Student
GPA: 3.74
I think I might be the unique one here since I got into the Berkeley waitlist twice. Last year, I applied for transfer(finished all the requirements and IGETC). I know my GPA is too low for Statistics - such a competitive major. But being waitlist gave me kinda hope. Even though I got in several other universities, I decided to give another try - reapply this year due to figuring out Berkeley overenrolled thus they didn’t open the waitlist process last year. Since I got too many transferable units(100+; I changed my major once in cc) I decided to apply OPT and work for a year, just to see if it’s space limitation, I shouldn’t give up on my dream school this easy. However, this year I got on the waitlist again… It’s so hard to describe how this feels慠慠

Hi, guys!

IS THERE ANY HAAS TRANSFER WAITLISTS? i havent seen any yet so i thought i would reach out

have faith, EVERYONE in this forum! if it’s meant to be, its meant to be.

Waitlisted
Major: Cog Sci
Gpa:3.84

I don’t think the essay is that useful since we have already put all of our stuffs in the personal statement unless you have sth rly special to add on.

Someone in last year forum was saying that ucb has a ranked system. They claimed they had a ā€œtrusted source.ā€

Either way everybody, I was appalled at how they treated all of us transfer students last year. Trying now to get destroyed by this. I’m just going to assume rejection and try to forget about it and just check later. not coming back to this thread would probably be healthier for all of us . Seems like everyone goes crazy with anxiety as time passes

CCC student here
Biology
3.5 overall
3.5 major
Strong writing skills and ECs

Do any of you think the waitlist is about money and funding? I feel like they want the students who will pay their way… since they already picked the needier/stronger students they really really wanted
Personally I have no expectations here

@na1996 If that is the case I am hosed lol.

@williamwhf Hey I’m a Cog Sci major also! Do you mind telling me what prereqs you did I feel like I may be missing one so much misinformation from different people

@williamwhf I think if it’s online they will take a lot of waitlist students but if it is in person they will take little to no one.

If you scroll down at the bottom of your waitlist letter, there’s a FAQ. In one of the answers, Berkeley states that their waitlist in unranked.

@williamwhf Berkeley also states that the decision will be made with regard to the original application. So yes, I agree with you!

For the second review, what aspect of the application will they focus on? Will it be focused strong GPA? Strong ECs? Both? One over the other? I wish I knew. If anything, they should focus on the top end of GPAs because at the end of the day, the goal for transfers in the UC system is to graduate within two years and GPA is the best indicator of that. I usually don’t think GPA has much value, but as transfers, its the only numerical stats we give them.

@Bubonica
I know, but they’ve given out false information before, so who knows.

My friend at my CC got rejected and she applied for the same major as me with a higher, near perfect gpa (3.9) . However, she is white, so maybe that was a factor. I also think financial aid may be a factor.
Or maybe she was missing a class, but I doubt it

Hey everyone. I read the thread for 2019 and 2018 and both were horrible. Everyone got rejected, and mentioned how UCB treated them horribly, failing to reject them, and leaving everyone hanging… not answering any questions they’d ask.
Just wanna warn you guys. UCB has shown they dont care at all about waitlisted transfers. It’s rly cold.
I feel like the waitlist is essentially a gentle reject. It’s just Super convenient for them to have a pool of people like us as unvalued benchwarmers, just in case  Bc who cares abt the individual right?

@na1996 I noticed in 2018(Class of 22 ) the class we are transferring into, they accepted less freshman than usual by a decent margin. Last year was rough because they were overenrolled. I don’t see the 2018 waitlist transfer stats. Class of 22 Acceptance rate was 15.1% compared to the class of '21 at 18.3%. Don’t give up hope just yet! I don’t think they took significantly more transfers than usual and if that’s the case I think we have a somewhat shot of getting in. 3% of 89,000 applicants is 2670, that’s how many fewer people got offers of admission. I’m sure with an around 60% yield rate they expected around an extra 1600 students to fill those spots. If they want more funding since some things may be cut they are going to want to grab more students.
