UC Berkeley Fall 2020: Transfer Waitlist Thread

the weirdest thing to me is why a number of people appealed and were moved to the waitlist. why would berkeley do that if they expected to admit so few from the waitlist?

In any case, the announcement came out today that the fall will be hybrid. Most classes will be remote except for classes under 25 students. Students have to get tested on campus and isolate for first 7-10 days.

I think if Berkeley is going to admit anybody and was waiting for the announcement, it should come out today or tomorrow. No hope after that.

Agreeing with this post because since the announcement was made, I’m sure there are one or two people who may drop but not a lot - I estimate 10-15 maximum. Should be this week but at this point who knows? They DID say that they admit by college so if your college is selective then its wayyyyy less likely (don’t worry I’m out too lol)

Make other plans, if Berk comes, it’s a blessing. If not, choose some,thing else. There is always graduate schoool

Here are new pieces of clarification from the UC chat…

whoever said that appeals are being put on the waitlist is FALSE:
“No, the appeal process is separate from the waitlist process. To your point, if the decision is made to admit a student via appeal, they would be admitted without being waitlisted.”

“That said, we have not closed the freshman or transfer waitlist and all students who opted in are still in consideration. Rest assured, all students on both waitlists will receive word from us as decisions are made.”

Anyone else feel like this is death by a thousand cuts!! I can’t take this waiting anymore!

All this time spamming refresh on the Berkeley page, now I am smashing my emails refresh button waiting for UCLA-housing to tell me whether or not I’ll have a housing offer!

Urgh! I just need a decision, one way or the other, then I can focus on that new path, instead of being one captain trying to sail two ships at once.

I don’t think it’s done by college. It’s by major. Otherwise Cal would have too many transfers concentrated in certain majors that had the most desirable candidates. i.e. maybe the average CS or Econ major is better than the average literature major (no offense). So if they admitted by college, they could end up with too many transfers pursuing those majors. If you go on the University of California website, they also post applicants, admits, and enrollment numbers per major.

is it decision FAQ or admission FAQ? I am confused

Admission FAQ will appear if you were admitted. You’ll see it the day before being notified by UCB.

i thought that too until someone asked it in the admissions chat and then I proceeded to ask privately, and that is what they said.

also, they said that next wave of transfers will “Likely we will wait through summer” and “We are not sure of the date as of yet”

Can’t believe they said that. If this is true, those who don’t have other universities to choose from will have the best chances. But making us wait till the end of July - that’s so cruel.

What I meant is that I wanted to appeal after being rejected off the waitlist. And they have explained, that waitlist students cannot do that.

@heyigotnoclue

Thank you for all the work you are putting in!! Hella clutch lol

Am I reading that right and they’re saying admissions off the wait-list may not end until July or further?

That’s from live chat:

Hi - do you have any information about when the next wave of admissions for students on the waitlist will be released? Thank you!

Likely we will wait through summer

from what i gathered from the chat, yup that is what it seems. ugh

According to reps on the live chat the waitlist could be extended throughout July or summer… omg i’m going crazy just waiting throughout June…

Same rep replied in the chat right now:

Should decisions be released after July 1, would admitted students be at a disadvantage in terms of choosing classes etc.? Unless it is released shortly after July 1?

We are hoping to have all waitlists out by around then.

I understand nothing. They are changing their words every hour.

@mimininja

From what I gather on the live chat, it seems as if UCB reps aren’t clued in to the administration or admissions offices. It seems like they are there more for live support and general questions. For example, they said that they only just found out about the decision to make Fall 2020 completely hybrid, at the same time we did.

I feel as if messaging the admissions office would give us much more clarity. However AFAIK there is no way to contact the admissions office directly rn. They list a phone number but offices are closed because of Covid. I also don’t know whether it’s morally right to message the admissions office. They probably have their hands full right now and messages might get them more annoyed or something? Idk.

But yeah, it seems as if UCB reps on the live chat are trying to be as vague as possible about waitlist admissions since they don’t have any concrete information.

Also, I see a lot of questions on the live chat asking about deferments because some students don’t want to pay full tuition for an online experience. However, the deadline for deferments has already passed. Seems some students feel pretty pissed and feel wronged. I cannot blame them. UCB should extend the deferment deadline, maybe that can open up some more spots for us?

that poor person today who was told their decision today but wanted to defer today but apparently cannot because the deadline passed…that’s rough…

I have to think that UCB is gonna do the right thing and extend the deferment deadline right? If not that’s so messed up. It seems as if UCB intentionally waited on announcing Fall 2020 plans until after deferment deadlines to lock in as much tuition as possible.

Students are asking to defer and UCB STILL isn’t budging on admitting more off the wait-list. What is going through their minds??

Maybe the reason that UCB is now gonna be evaluating the waitlist past the end of the month is because they are expecting some students to withdrawal or defer? IDK

@ShmopyShoj
If UCB will extend deferments deadline - they will have even less spots left for spring (remember, they have already offered some people to consider next semester). So that’s why they will probably not do that. Our only hope is that those pissed students (who got accepted but still choosing where to go) will consider other universities instead, and spots will open up this way.

if it comes down to it, if you were admitted for winter, would you go? that would be the question because more than likely, there is gonna be a round two of covid. so that’s probably going to make everyone go online again.

ill be here to admit that I probably would consider going mainly because of how good the program that I want to be in - is
