UC Berkeley Fall 2020: Transfer Waitlist Thread

@ShmopyShoj Adding to that, there is a bill that just passed called ACA 5 that will limit the amount of Asian/Pacific Islander students so if you are part of that group then there will be more more competition. A lot of my friends at my current college as well as their families are pretty furious because its well, a racist bill that is supposedly fighting racism. Obviously if you aren’t part of that ethnicity it won’t apply to you, but in terms of just learning how bad it is towards my friends, I’m pretty disappointed that California passed such a thing.

From reading a lot of the posts from this thread up to this point, you should be admitted based off of achievement and what hurdles you have overcome. I have seen specific people(not race or ethnicity) in classes like psychology who were very smug about how they only was targeting for a 3.5 because they were part of a favorable affirmative action group. Literally they claimed they did nothing outside of class, this person had a 3.3 gpa at the time, and every week they wouldn’t shut up about bringing up how they felt so lucky they weren’t another person. Obviously the majority of people regardless of race/gender/ethnicity are very qualified and have earned a place where they are, but I can’t help but feel that some spots were taken away just because of ethnicity.

I agree with you for this point…

@harryjackson1

I am a first generation Mexican. No one in my immediate family had graduated HS before me. I also come from a city that has the highest crime and homicide rates in the state. I had a 3.75 GPA in a not very competitive major (Physics), I have some research experience under my belt, and I wrote all about my upbringing and background in my essays.

And I still didn’t get in. So believe me, Cal did not follow ACA guidelines this year. I am literally the “poster boy” for affirmative action and I was put on the wait-list.

The bill has only passed congress. Californians will be able to vote on the bill on Nov 3rd. The bill is not law right now. You did not lose your spot for this upcoming semester because of affirmative action.

Have you got admitted since your box disappears?

keep checking portal and thread/4 hrs… nothing happens

@ShmopyShoj Just like you said, ACA 5 was just passed ~2 weeks ago. While it may or may not affect how they admit the waitlist, it will certainly be in effect next year if the bill finally passes(there is a big trend that it will)

I am white so this bill dosen’t apply to me.

@givmethemail
Admission office is closed until Monday, so no need to do that.

@harryjackson1

Yeah there is definitely a chance the bill passes by next year. AFAIK the bill mainly helps Mexicans, African-Americans, and Native Americans.

The way it worked before is that if you were part of these ethnicities then you would get a boost on your application. If you are White then you receive no boost and if you were Asian then you get a negative “boost”.

So even though you’re white and are not receiving a negative “boost”, you’re at a disadvantage compared to the other ethnictities because they are receiving boosts and you are not. So you would get passed up on in favor of others who have the same grades/ECs as you because they are part of a minority group.

I understand why Universities want to promote more diversity. Minorities are usually at a big disadvantage when it comes to academic performance. However affirmative action is just a band aid on the solution. Extra funding at earlier levels and more mentor-ship opportunities is what we need, not an arbitrary boost to our applications.

If the bill passes and you are not a part of a minority group then expect stiffer competition next Fall. According to the news, Cal especially is advocating hard for affirmative action. Meeting diversity quotas also unlocks more funding and most UCs are gonna be craving that extra funding because they’re bleeding money during this pandemic.

@mimininja
I just looked at your previous post and I agree I actually like Cal Poly SLO wayyy more than UCB. Cal poly is actually the first or second best school for architecture in the US. It was my original first choice because of their B. Arch degree, but I applied this year and got rejected I think it is probably because Chabot does not offer that many articulated courses like other colleges such as DVC. Do you know if those who apply to SLO from DVC have to take every single Arch course offered at DVC??? Because I saw DVC’s and saw that there is a lot and I am considering taking classes there is this waitlist thing does not work out.

BTW- I emailed admissions asking about CED waitlist yesterday, they have not replied yet but I’ll let you know what they tell me.

Also how do you know the admissions office is closed today, and since when has it been closed?

I’m unsure of how much affirmative action exists, I was TAP certified, all prereqs done, great GPA, top ECS, killer Essays, low income, and from 2 minorities Hispanic and African American and did not even get waitlisted at UCLA lol. I just think it comes down to who reads your app.

I think acceptance should be based on merit and they should look at a socioeconomic status instead of ethnic background. In my mind, a poor Hispanic/African American kid like myself has the same amount of challenges that a poor Asian American student would have. Like if I didn’t have to work full time and have over responsibilities through college I know for a fact my GPA would be above a 3.9.

@Quarentinetingzz

This is the list of DVC classes required for transfer to CalPoly SLO Architecture:

ARCHI 130 Architectural Graphics I
ARCHI 131 Architectural Graphics II
ARCHI 135 Digital Tools for Design
ARCHI 156 History of World Architecture: Early Civilizations to Middle Ages
ARCHI 157 History of World Architecture: Middle Ages to 18th Century
ARCHI 158 History of World Architecture: 18th Century to Present
ARCHI 121 Architectural Design I
CONST 144 Materials of Construction
ARCHI 220 Architectural Design II
ARCHI 244 Architectural Practice and Working Drawings I
ARCHI 221 Architectural Design III
ARCHI 207 Environmental Control Systems
MATH 192 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I
MATH 193 Analytic Geometry and Calculus II
PHYS 120 General College Physics I
PHYS 121 General College Physics II
additional 18 units from any EDES, ARCH, ARCE, CM, CRP, LA or ART course

I already completed most from it for UCB + 7 course breadth requirement (don’t need it for CalPoly)

It’s from their twitter:
“In honor of #Juneteenth, our offices will be closed tomorrow, 6/19. We will resume our normal virtual business hours on 6/22.”

Thank you @mimininja ! I think the only ones I still would need Since Chabot does not offer anything like those classes are:

ARCHI 156 History of World Architecture: Early Civilizations to Middle Ages
ARCHI 157 History of World Architecture: Middle Ages to 18th Century
ARCHI 158 History of World Architecture: 18th Century to Present
ARCHI 207 Environmental Control Systems

Do you by any chance know if there is a waitlist or if there’s still room available for those courses for fall 2020?

And oh ok thank you good know we won’t hear from them this weekend I guess :frowning:

@Quarentinetingzz
Those I’m taking during fall myself:
ARCHI 156 - has waitlist
ARCHI 157 - opened
ARCHI 207 - opened

I already completed ARCHI 158, it shows 0 seats, but I believe waitlist should be opened

Both waitlist classes are taught by the same professor. Amazing teacher and a very kind person. I am sure she’ll take everyone off the waitlist

Fall semester should be online

@mimininja

Thank you so much for your help! I’m to try to enroll in DVC right now and see if I can take those classes, are they typically online or just this fall?

@Quarentinetingzz

I think none of architecture classes in DVC are normally offered online, it’s just for this fall.

Anyone get the glitch today?

@ShmopyShoj Nope no glitch for me, did u?

Guys, I don’t think anyone got the glitch today, the office is closed.

I didn’t realize it was so late in June already… I’m beginning to lose a lot of hope of potentially getting off the waitlist. It’s really crazy to me how there hasn’t even been a real wave either… Anyways i hope you all know how amazing you are wherever you guys all end up transferring to in the future!!
