I just get an email back from my department rep. The person said L&S majors will be decided together…
so that means more L/S students will be getting in?
There was one AO who said the decision for remote vs in person learning wouldn’t affect decisions. However, every other AO, has mentioned it would impact WL/appeal space. They said they might extend freshman decisions, but would decide before mid july class selection time. However, they clarified that this plan for now is only for freshman and may (or may not) apply to transfers. They’ve always said there is one more transfer wave.
@givmethemail so what does that mean?
I got a similar response here from my department’s rep. They are not admitting off the wait list according to major. They are admitting off the wait list according to college.
You guys are giving me hope. I really hope there’s at least one real wave.
So, there’ll most likely be one more big wave left.
They just said the way to select waitlist students but there is no guarantee for a wave
I don’t think you can infer that based on what they said to me. All that means is that you are admitted based off your college and not your major. You cannot infer more past that.
I’m not trying to be a debbie downer but the chances of us getting admitted are drastically lower than what they were a couple weeks ago. The first “wave” of admissions is always the biggest. Because of the pandemic there will be some people deferring or rejecting their admissions and that will cause a few stragglers to get admitted off the wait-list but I do not think we are gonna see huge numbers admitted off the wait-list. This is consistent with how wait-lists work and it is also consistent to what UCB reps have been saying. They have already said that not many more will get admitted and some colleges are even at full capacity already.
This is something you guys don’t want to here but it is likely that only few or none of us on this thread will get admitted. Start planning to attend your other SIR’ed University. Keep checking your UCB portal in the off chance that you are admitted but do not drag your feet. Start looking forward to your other choice and start sending in transcripts.
Does anyone get the glitch…Is it necessary for us to get the glitch to be admitted?
Agreed! I’ve already sent in my final transcripts, test scores, ID card application, and my pre-orientation survey to my SIR’d university. I’m anticipating that I will be attending this university in the fall. I will remain on Cal’s waitlist because you never know— it’ll be a pleasant surprise but I’m not going to expect an acceptence anymore.
Good luck to everyone.
Good luck at UCLA! I only had the money to apply to one another school aside from my TAG school and I ended up choosing applying to UCB over UCLA. I regret that decision so much now that I see how many UCLA students got off the waitlist lol.
True! I checked the UCLA transfer waitlist thread out of curiosity and was surprised by the number of people admitted from the waitlist. It is really unfortunate that you weren’t able to apply, but I strongly believe everything happens for a reason— there is something else waiting for you.
But what I heard from UCLA is they extended SIR date and many students who got off wailist dropped their berkeley offer
I’m a freshman who also follows this thread, since it may be similar. I think the glitch is just something that happens 2-3 hrs before a wave of admissions comes through. This thread seems to be way more pessimistic than other freshmen I’ve been talking to/talked to. The freshman WL was extended by email from the date of June 1 which was when we were supposed to get out decision. It’s now end of June, like you guys. We haven’t had any releases since June 1.
The other day in a live chat, one of the AO’s said releases would be in “smaller batches” for freshmen, but there would still be acceptances. In fact every single AO has maintained that there would be freshmen admitted off the waitlist still. However, the same AO was asked about whether this would account for summer melt, and the learning method. The AO said, no, and that that could have an impact as well. There was a poll on reddit, 7-8% of students did not plan to return for hybrid classes.
Another AO said that around 60 freshman appeals would be admitted total, and that’s twice as many as usual, and they explicitly also states more appeals would be let in. I don’t think they’re pessimistic, and every single AO except one has said the learning plan would impact decisions.
One AO even said they may wait through the summer to release the freshman waitlist, and possibly after July 1, but before class registration.
Furthermore this was on the freshman WL thread :
" Called the admissions office today. All they told me was that there were still kids dropping out to accept offers at other schools and to wait another 12 days. I’m so incredibly frustrated right now. "
Meaning students are continuing to drop out by the day (atleast for freshmen). The AO’s aren’t particularly transparent either in my opinion, for example, I went to the chat one day, and then they said that “traditional spots were filled”, yet traditional spots opened up later the SAME day. Within three hours. I don’t think they’re being transparent honestly.
They extended the freshman waitlist for a reason, they’ve hinted at extending it again. Now, I don’t think transfers will be extended at all, since every AO has said “There’ll be a final wave near the end of June” for transfer waitlists as far as i remember. But that being said, they have to account for nearly 8% of their class melting away. That would pose many issues. They may have overadmitted transfers as they were working on transfer decisions through the pandemic.
They’re in a financial crisis, and if you listened to the chancellor talk, she said “we’re very concerned about summer melt” The fact that they’re very concerned about it suggests they’d need to pull more from the WL.
Honestly, as a freshman, my outlook on the situation is really good. I think there’s most certainly a shot, and they’ve talked about extending the freshman WL, and have CONFIRMED that there’s people dropping still. That’s amazing!
@ShmopyShoj I don’t see such a big reason to be pessimistic about the situation, given that they need to replace some students, and can easily overenroll in anticipation of melt, and to lighten the financial load considering fall semester.
But the fact is much less transfers get admitted this year. So there is nothing to say they have already over admitted transfer students. They overadmitted transfers last year and they even didnt open appeal or waitlist seats. Also the admin extended SIR till June 2. They explained that for tech issues. However, I thought they hadnt got enough students on June 1 as they expected.
You cannot compare the freshman situation to the transfer situation. Freshman can choose to defer admission into Berkeley and attend CC for a semester or two. Freshman can also decide that the cost of hybrid classes isn’t worth it and instead get an AS for much cheaper at CC and then transfer over to Berkeley after they are done with their GE and major pre-reqs.
The majority of transfer students being admitted to Berkeley have already finished their GE and major pre-reqs. They quite literally have no other option than to attend Berkeley, unless they want to take a gap year.
The point is that freshman have options while transfer students don’t. We have also seen a decline in transfer students admitted off the waitlist in recent years. Last year no one got in off the waitlist and the year before that only about 25% of students got in. Waitlist admission for transfer students in general has been trending down.
I have no idea what is going on with the freshman waitlist situation so I won’t comment on that. But so far the general feeling among UCB reps has been that the transfer waitlist is almost over and that there aren’t many spots left.
We have already gotten confirmation on this thread that one particular college is already at max capacity and won’t be admitting any more off the waitlist. The most recent waitlist admittees are being admitted for Spring 2021 and not Fall 2020. This suggests that the wait-list process is on it’s final stages, not in it’s beginning ones.
If 8% of the class really melts away then that would fasho open up spots off the waitlist. But I am very skeptical about drawing conclusions based on reddit polling. You can’t even verify that everyone who voted in that poll attends Berkeley.
Another differenc is over 90 % transfers are from CA CC. So we are less likely to transfer to universities in other states. However, frosh came from all over the world they may choose more selective schools in other states or other countries
If they are only going to admit 1 person or none at all, all I’m gonna say is that if they do admit very, very few people, I hope at least one of those goes to someone who has been on this thread. I really do.
They make decisions mainly based on original application. But I wish they could consider our struggles and difficulties during pandemic if any admin checks this thread.
Same here. If not me I hope one of you get in. Especially those of you that got rejected elsewhere or only applied here.
If y’all don’t get in don’t beat yourself up over it. Now more than ever recruiters are starting to value internships and prior experiences over school prestige. Unless you wanna do something crazy like work at Wall Street or do research at MIT then school prestige is not the deciding factor for how the rest of your career will go.
For example, Berkeley is a ~ Top 3 school for technology related majors and they’re located in the Silicone Valley. Yet a state school like SJSU is beating out schools like Berkeley and Stanford in the amount of graduates that go on to work tech jobs in the Silicone Valley. That’s because SJSU focuses on pushing students towards internships and gaining work experience while a school like Berkeley is more geared towards research and being an academia powerhouse.
This is only a stepping stone for your guys careers. 90% of you don’t NEED to go to Berkeley to follow your future goals.
