99.3% of everyone on the waitlist Isngoing to be rejected. Prepare yourself.
Just got this email!
We appreciate your patience as we determine the available space for our incoming class. While we are still unable to offer you admission to UC Berkeley at this time, we want you to know that we’re still considering students from the wait list through mid-July. We encourage you to hold on to your space at another institution in case we cannot follow up with an offer. We want to make sure you have a place you can call home this Fall. We apologize for the delay and we’ll be in touch with a final decision soon.
I receive a email about the extension of the waitlist.
WHAT IN THE WORLD BERKELEY!!!

Just got the email too
haas just confirmed no more spots via email since i emailed them earlier last week. sigh
Some other department said they had no more spots either. I would guess that the majority if not all of the departments currently have no more remaining spots.
My guess is Berkeley is holding out on the wait-list in case people melt away. Then some spots will become available and they will draw from the wait-list to fill those remaining spots.
I don’t expect a ton of spots to open up in just a couple weeks so either 99% of the remaining wait-list will be rejected and only few spots offered or Berkeley extends the date again past mid-July to see if more spots open up.
Basically we are just being used as insurance for Berkeley lol. Berkeley should just act and give us admissions based on projections. Would save both us and them a lot of anxiety and under/over enrolling by a trivial amount will not be the end of the world for them.
Edit: So in the freshman thread apparently someone got an appeals rejection letter instead of the email that most of us on here got. So it seems as if a small amount of people did get rejected today. Read from that what you will.
I thought of the exact thing you said, we are being used as an insurance policy lol, basically if anyone says we don’t want to do online courses then they will go look at waitlist, I think they are at capacity right now but are just waiting to see as certain fees become due who pays them. PLS PRETEND THIS IS A REJECTION FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH GUYS!!! I would be surprised if 3 people in this thread get accepted.
Well, melt is also a pretty big deal. Berkeley is hugely international, and many many internationals are planning on taking a gap semester (even a couple I know) so I’m fairly sure both freshmen + transfers still on the list have a good shot. They also confirmed that a some of freshmen had been leaving by the day to someone over the phone, not sure how much that means.
I’d still think there’s a semi-fair shot.
I contacted my department but they refused to tell me if they have reached the capacity lol…
@givmethemail what department was it? and what exactly did they say? just “we can’t answer”?
So if you do get in you can not defer or basically take a semester break since you are meant to be a guarantee fix to someone who did decide to leave online classes. I thought once you get in berk, you are in for life in the sense that you can return anytime. At the same time, the people who got in at april had the choice to defer as well. So if you were accepted from appeal or waitlist you are forced to attend?
they said they dont have this info and ask me to contact admission office…
I have some junior berk frds who have decided to defer. I dont know if this could count as a factor
Would a gap semester help us?
Berkeley is already at full capacity for Fall 2020 and all the recent admits off the waitlist have been admitted to Spring 2020. Students would need to be taking year deferrals for spots to open up.
I think some amount of people will be taking yearly deferrals but I really doubt that it will be a significant enough amount to notably impact our wait-list chances.
Google Coronavirus Curve
The curve has went up EXPONENTIALLY and is not evening anytime soon. There are upwards of 40,000 new cases EACH day in the united states, and because its the ONLY country that has the problem of seemingly endless growth, its projected that online/hybrid will carry on to spring(think about upcoming elections/holidays/protest-gatherings). Thus, it is not too far of a fact that some international families may be very concerned/
Since waitlist is extended, do spring grades matter? I remember the rep saying it doesn’t before, but I hope it now does because my grades during Spring despite Pandemic are very strong. Also, I have been tutoring 3 different topics since classes has been online for the school and they needed students to cover for drop ins.
@harryjackson1
I know Stanford and Brown (for freshmen waitlist) have done this - banning deferrals for WL admit students so it’s possible.
@ShmopyShoj
See ^^ regarding the very very high likelihood of a hybrid/online spring. Berkeley knows this, and ppl who take semester deferrals are pretty likely to take a year deferral as well when spring is online. Many additional students will do fall, realize how bad it is to have online classes, and gap spring semester. The fact of the matter is that Berkeley needs their complete number of undergraduates for Fall 2020 AND spring 2020, so any gaps help us.
The deadline to request a gap was June 30th for transfer and July 6 to confirm the gap year request for freshies. That may have something to do with the delay. I think Berkeley would look pretty bad to deny international students gap years, especially since many of those students will be withdrawing should they not be granted (new incoming students).
For people complaining about being used as an insurance policy, you were already used like that when they waitlisted you. So, it is not a big deal. Lol.
