UC Berkeley Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeal Discussion

March 28 is Decision day for UCB so I am starting the Waitlist/Appeal discussion thread.

2023 Timeline: Several Engineering admits and a few L&S May 8. College of Chemistry Chem Eng, Unspecified Eng, Architecture May 23. Few Econ admits June 20. Admits on July 5 L&S, COE and CNR. A few alternate major admits noted. Denials posted on July 21. Rare admits July 24.

Below are some Waitlist stats from the last few years.

Number of waitlisted students admitted 1191

2023: APPEALS: 1418
APPROVED: 30

2022 from CDS:

Number of wait-listed students admitted:44

2021:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 11,725 Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 6,871

2022 Appeals: Counselor conference data
Appeals received: 1240
Appeals granted: 4

2021 Appeals:

General questions on the waitlist. UC Berkeley did remove their waitlist statement last year and will no longer accept any additional documentation.

  1. No specific timeline for waitlist admits. If space opens up before the SIR deadline of May 15, then students can be pulled from the waitlist.
  2. Residency type and major are not broken out for the UC waitlists
  3. The number of enrolled waitlisted students is not listed.
  4. No LOCI’s since UC’s do not consider demonstrated interest. Opting into the waitlist shows your interest in attending.
  5. Opting into the waitlist is by invitation only.
  6. You cannot appeal your decision while on the waitlist.

I assume the data you provided is accurate. Why UCB had waitlist admission rate 24.2% for class of 2027, but just 1% - 5% in previous years.

Did UCB realize they were underenrolled last year? They could adjust admission rate for class of 2018, right?

Several UC’s had higher than normal admit rates from their waitlists last year. I believe they were conservative on the original enrollment estimates so they accepted more off the waitlist.

Is there data that shows the number of OOS admitted students who SIR’ed with other schools?

Thanks!

I am not aware of any data specific to OOS students.

According to all the portal astrology hacks, I apparently got in, but I’m still waiting on the real decision
4.53 weighted, 3.87 unweighted, ECs: raised 2.5 million for tourette’s research (spoke at the capitol to pass a bill), wrote a research paper through ASDRP (research program), Neuroscience research program and immunology program at Rosetta Institute, Research at UC Berkeley with a Neuroscience professor, Started 2 research nonprofits which raised 10k in total and helped 100 students publish 10 research papers, Raised 17k funding for hackathon, Regional champion and placed in states for Science Olympiad, Managed Youtube channel with 250k subs, School neuroscience club VP, School red cross club president, Tutored 15 kids for 70 hrs total, AP scholar with distinction, Volunteer Gold service award, blah blah blah stuff that doesn’t matter
Essays: One 10/10 essay, rest were 8/10. Best one was about my experience at the Capitol advocating for Tourette’s funding. Second one was about my hardships with Tourette’s and overcoming most of them. Third was about my time at ASDRP and the research I did. Fourth was about the Rosetta Neuroscience program and my project there.
Major: Psychology, College of L&S

Lol I got waitlisted from all the other UCs except Santa Cruz so I’m banking on Berkeley. Wish me luck guys!

So going back before the pandemic, were tiny waitlist acceptance rates the norm and last year was the anomaly?

Guys do you have any idea bout how many applicants will be admitted from waitlist?

Does checking the box for FPF (Fall Program for First Semester) when submitting the waitlist acceptance form increase your chances of being admitted?

Here is the data for the last 3 years found on the top of this Waitlist discussion. Every year is different so it will depend upon how many admitted students enroll by May 15 and how many spots are still available. Opt into the waitlist and move on since you need to enroll in another school by the SIR deadline.

D24, Waitlisted, initially applied for Poli Sci- 3.97UW, OOS. Is there a LOCI process for UCB?

Last year, they only accepted updated Senior grades/transcripts and no waitlist statement or LOCI. It should state on the Waitlist FAQ if things have changed.

If I am remembering correctly, they did not really accept those either. The form was briefly open to submit transcripts, but then they quickly removed the form. (Or am I misremembering?)

This is what you posted last year:

After the opt-in form is submitted, go back to the main status page and check for the option to upload a transcript.

Assuming it is the same but waiting for any waitlisted students to confirm.

Yes, but then they took it down very quickly. Do you see that in the thread? (I’m not looking at it)

On last years Waitlist discussion thread, as of April 2, waitlisted students were still seeing the upload materials box on the waitlist opt in form.

Yes, I was just scrolling down the thread. They were telling people at first not to submit unless it was specifically requested. Someone called admissions and was told not to submit anything. And then they removed the section from the web page for everyone (I believe) on April 6.

I guess so and I also clicked it.
