UC Berkeley Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeal Discussion

Thank you! Email delays are just within minutes and not days right?

Sometimes the email delays can be a couple of hours. It does vary. I know many students just make it a habit to check their portal daily.

I mean yea it makes sense if you’re in-state because cal is generally a target/safety school for the average high-achieving student in Cali.

What? That is not true at all. Many high achieving California students do not get accepted to Cal. It is definitely considered a reach for all in state students, even the very high achieving ones.

The admit rate for CA residents for UC Berkeley was 14.4% so around 86% of the applicants are denied. No way a Safety or Target.

Very true! Many IS students got into top schools out of the state but rejected by Cal

Yes this was definitely the case at my school

In fact, given the competition in recent years, IS students can’t even consider the mid tier UCs( UCSB, UCSD,UCI, UCD) as safety/target schools any more with their admission rate of ~20-30%. I believe UCs will be more popular going forward due to the AI boom

I know we all want to get in off the waitlist
but part of me was really hoping the follow-through from the infamous TikTok letter would mean we’d all know something (even if it’s rejection) by now. The roller coaster just makes me want to move on with our alternate (or previous, really) plans.

They will not close the WL before July 31. However, given the trend there is no hope.
I have moved on.

Also FWIW I just spoke to my college counsellor at my public HS and they have not received this email (as seen on TikTok) so that’s that.
So either the TikTok email is fake or my school is too poor to get the Berkeley AVC love.

One more blow to its legitimacy. They’re a public institution; why would they only send this out to a private consultant? Plus, sending out updates like this mid-cycle is unheard of. If it’s real, there will probably be consequences for Berkeley admissions leadership.

It was sent to all the counselors on the counselor mailing list which any counselor can sign up for. The form is on their website.

No, it wasn’t. My school counselor was signed up to that newsletter and did not receive it.

Again why this secrecy amd complexity? Why not post on their website for everyone to see at the same time.

Tell her to check her spam folder

The person who posted it isn’t a school counselor. She’s a private counselor who people hire to help their kids get into college.

I wish I had known this before, perhaps loaned some money to pay her or other such “connected” counsellors. Seems like it could have helped. Now I am paying 5 times for college at CMU :sob:

My son would love to get off of CMU’s waitlist. Congrats on the acceptance!

Thanks and best of luck to your son.
CMU is a great school and arguably CMU CS is better than Cal. My gripe is almost 90k / year that I will be saddled with in student loans.
