UC Berkeley Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeal Discussion

Exactly, I don’t believe that they’ll send out any notifications to private counselors. Why would they, and they have never done such thing before

I just want to say that I am 100% not lying and was disheartened when I heard that. If anyone wants to verify they claim, feel free to call the Berkeley admissions office at 510-642-3175. They are open until 4 I think

Yeah, maybe we need a tie breaker lol

I’ve called Berkeley 3 times over the past week (yes I know) and they have told me every. single. time. that the waitlist will be open through July. The past two calls have made it clear that the letter is inaccurate (if not completely false) as well, since there is no reason why Berkeley would only communicate to private counselors.

but i think Berkeley not realising a wave yet i think kind of indicates that the class is prolly full and they have the waitlist open just in case of melt (ppl withdrawing berkeley after the deadline). soo i would assume that Berkeley could pull some ppl out but the chances are looking really low. i personally decided to just move on and focus on the school I’m committed too

lol this is so funny

Ok so If I’m understand things correctly, it’s PROBABLY true that Berkeley won’t take many off the waitlist this year. However, the letter is PROBABLY false? So many people are saying different things. Who is lying? Who is telling the truth? Is the office of admissions telling different information to different people?

I am a bit stunned how much confusing information is being spread to people who call in. Why would an email like that be sent to only private school counselors but not public? More importantly, why not notify the students who applied and paid an application fee if you believe the wl will be very limited? This is bizarre and I wonder if this indicative of how they run their operations?

My S24 is extremely happy with his commited school, and he is also on the UC Berkeley waitlist and one other school.

To anyone who is reading these posts about “the letter” being mentioned in a TiK Tok from a private counselor, and reading about conflicting phone calls to the admissions office: Don’t drop off the waitlist just because of some random posts on CC. We are 2 weeks later than previous years for the SIR deadline. Berkeley has said July 1 is when they will close the WL (however, some years applicants have been accepted later than that date), so we are waiting no matter what. Be very skeptical since people want others to drop off WL to increase their chances of acceptance.

Hear hear! Also, we’re barely month out from the SIR deadline, so we could be going into July (and conceivably August, based on today’s call).

I don’t know if the letter is real or not but, imo, yes, this is Berkeley. Everything is bureaucratic and frustrating and more complicated than it needs to be. That has been my experience at Cal, both as a grad student for 8+ years, and now as a Cal parent. There’s a lot to love about Cal, but its bureaucratic operations ain’t it.

That is good to know. I appreciate your reply & honesty about your experience.

It is slowly becoming clear that WL may be a trickle… if that.
At the risk of sounding a j*rk I think they changed their criteria to protect their yield.
I have a sample of about 10 but the people I know who got in were not super confident of getting in and did not get in other t20…On the other hand people on WL or outrightly denied got some good alternatives including ivies.
So anyway, this also implies little to no melt.

Interesting because of the people who got into Cal at my school, most are instead enrolling at HYPSM.

I agree with this but I feel it’s also cuz my school is instate

I wonder if anyone is trying portal astrology, especially today and tomorrow? Has that worked for WL admits in the past?

Question…

If there are updates in the WL (admittance, rejection, close of WL, etc) , will the students get an email notifications to check the portal? Or do students just have to constantly check the portal for updates? If there are email notifications, is it possible for them to go into spam folders?

In general, the portal will update first. You should be emailed that there is an update in the portal, but sometimes the email will be delayed.
