UC Berkeley Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeal Discussion

Unfortunately, my son is declining his Cal offer for Stats/Data Science so I hope someone who really wants to attend Cal gets the spot and loves it there. I’m super bummed since Cal is such a fantastic school (my older son is a junior there) but my younger son chose UCSB. I think it’s a mistake but it’s his decision. I’m still hoping he gets into UCLA (he’s on the waitlist there) since I think he’d accept that over UCSB but it’s a long shot. Good luck to all of those on the Cal waitlist!

Sorry to hear, does UCSB have a data science program, I know they have a Stats program. And I hear you, my son picked UCSB over some other OOS higher ranked better known schools and is also on the Cal and UCLA waitlist !

Hi there! D24 has committed to Calpoly Slo for now, studying Biological Sciences. Seems like a great program with a 4% acceptance rate into the program, which boggles the mind how she was waitlisted for some of the UC’s which had much higher acceptance rates. But none of this has ever made perfect sense  Best of luck to you as well!

Erm does major affect the chances on the waitlist?

Yes, major does affect chances on the waitlist. If, for example, a disproportionate number of students from a particular major decline their offers, they will be looking to fill more of those spots (and vice versa).

True , unless u were undeclared , i think.

As stated, major can affect your waitlist chances but not all the UCB Colleges admit by major. For the Colleges that do admit by like Engineering, Chemistry, CCDS and High Demand L&S majors it can make a difference.

Does anyone have any statistics in on that? I looked online but don’t know what’s reliable. Would a major like anthropology be easier to get off the waitlist than suppose an engineering major?

My son’s major at UCSB is called Statistics and Data Science. I don’t know much about it.

I think (but am not positive) that the UCs don’t release freshman admit data by major but they do release transfer admit data by major. Our college counselor looked at that a bit to gauge how many spots a major may have at particular UCs.

None of the UC’s break out waitlist admit by major but for UC Berkeley specifically, Engineering majors are a direct admit but other than the high demand majors in L&S, all waitlist admits come in as Undeclared. L&S also has the majority of undergrads and majors, so chances are higher if you selected an L&S major vs. another colleges major.

To admit off WL, do they consider 1st choice major or both 1st and 2nd? Asking for all UCs in general.

UCB states they will consider primary and alternate majors during the waitlist process.

Thank you!

I thought for Berkeley only one major was allowed for consideration? I don’t recall an alternate.

Does anyone know environmental science is competitive this year? And is it difficult to be admitted to Rausser College of Natural Resources from the waitlist? Thanks!

UCB added an alternate major in 2022, but specifically stated they only consider the alternate major in the waitlist and appeal process.

Q: Can applicants to Berkeley select more than one major on the application?
A: Students can select a primary major and an alternate major. Currently, Berkeley only guarantees the review of the primary major but may consider alternate majors if space is available when we conduct our waitlist and appeals review processes .
