Coolness, I’m in SoCal region so it stung a little when LA rejected me but I understand the competition I’m up against so its okay. (Will appeal to my alt major though) GO BEARS!
Congratulations! I am delighted to offer you admission to the University of California, Berkeley for Fall 2018! You have been admitted to the College of Letters and Science.

Admitted: UCLA, UCSB, UCI, UCSD

Attended a CSU for my freshman year then 1 year at CC
Accepted (for Spring 2019)
Economics (but Berkeley only admits you as undecided)
GPA: 4.0 (both overall and major)
Pre-Req: completed
IGETC: Finishing in Spring
ECs: Average (leadership role in a couple of clubs), Part time work during summer.
Essays: Average (when I read them now, I feel that they could have been better)
Accepted: UCSB, UCD, UCLA, UCSD, UCB
Denied: None
Anyone here knows if I can still apply for Economics if I join in Spring? I heard somewhere that you can only apply for it in Fall. If that happens then I will have to wait for a full year to apply. That will be a deal breaker.
For the future applicants, my conclusion is that for the UCs, the GPA IS KING. Out of HS my GPA was 3.8 (Weighted) and I was rejected up and down by all these UCs. I am so grateful for the CCC system which wiped my slate clean and gave me an opportunity to come back with a perfect GPA.
All other things have not changed much on my application but GPA has and it appears to have been the deciding factor.
GPA: 3.59
Major: MCB (in LS)
Pre-Reqs: Finished
IGETC: Finished
4 Associate’s from Fall, 2 this Spring
EC’s: Heavy, Student Ambassador, Club President, Honors Program, Multiple Research Projects, Dean’s List multiple semesters, Part-time Pharm Tech and more
Major: COMPUTER MOTHERTRUCKIN SCIENCE
GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Completed
Major requirements: Completed
Personal insights: 9/10 (thought was 8/10 but since I was accepted…+1) Had them checked multiple times by a UCB transfer coordinator and one time by a UCB admissions officer
ECs: English, Maths, and CS Tutor, UCB Summer Enrichment Program participant (1 of ~30 selected from CCCs to take a course at UCB free of charge over the summer. Ended up withdrawing because I wasn’t doing so hot and am cognizant of the 3.3 GPA required to declare for the CS major. I was told this wasn’t going to affect admissions), UI/UX designer for a trading journal project, member of psychology and CS clubs, etc. Part of the UCB Transfer Alliance Project. Not great honestly
Applied: UCD, UCSD, UCLA, UCB
(Missing Calc III and the last 2 physics courses for UCD, UCSD, UCLA. UCB doesn’t require for L&S CS)
Rejected at SD and LA, waitlisted at Davis
My application was very obviously geared towards UCB (I stated in the major essay that I had completed all requirements, which was only true for UCB, and I had a few involvements with the school that I put on my ECs). I was not really expecting to get into the other schools because of my 3 missing prereqs so I am genuinely happy that Berkeley took the chance on me. Otherwise, I would have had to stay another year.
I think what set my application apart was my clear focus on UCB and personal insights. I’m sure there are many others of the same GPA, and my extracurriculars aren’t anything special. All my essays, except the major one, were philosophical. I’ve been through tough circumstances, which I explained in my essays but made sure not to dwell on. I explained WHAT I LEARNED from those circumstances. In the major essay, I tried to really drill in that I was prepared to transfer.
Good luck to everyone, regardless of whether you were accepted or not. No matter where you go, know that, as rightfully cliche as it sounds, discipline is still the key to success.
Applied for Economic, so I am admitted to the College of Letters and Science
4.0 GPA, 69 units in.
IGETC and all pre-reqs are completed by the end of Spring 2018 semester.
Took “hard” classes like linear algebra, Calc 3, DFQ, and calc-based physics just for fun, and at least 6 econ related classes (including macro and micro econ.)
Accepted: UCSB, UCSD, UCLA, UCB (applied to 4 UCs since it was free)
Pending: Stanford
If not Stanford, then I will definitely choose Berkeley over UCLA!
CCC in Sacramento.
Major: Anthropology
GPA: 3.6
IGETC: Completed
Pre-requisites: Completed
EC’s: Simple, but good!
Essays: Best part of my application in my opinion!
Accepted (in order): Sfsu, Sjsu, UCSC, UCSB, UCD, UCLA, UCB.
Waiting: Stanford, Cornell.
NOTE: I will be attending UCLA instead this fall, It was always my choice over Berkeley. Y’all if you can appeal, do so!
Music (College of Letters and Sciences) (I also do know that this is an unimpacted major)
GPA: 3.32
Pre-reqs: none (I didn’t take any upper level theory or music history classes, I took some ensemble courses and a piano class)
IGETC: finished winter 2017
ECs: heavily involved in several music organizations for 10+ years
Essays: I talked about music A LOT in my essays and how it has motivated me in academics and other parts of my life etc.
Accepted: UCLA, UCB, UCI, UCD, UCSC, UCSD, CSULB, SFSU, SJSU, Berklee College of Music
Rejected: None
Tbh I’m not sure how I got in with the GPA that I have, I believe my essays were probably what got me in. However,I did start writing most of them at 8pm the night they were due (@ future applicants pls don’t do what I did) so I’m kinda still in shock that I got in with what I wrote. To anyone with a low GPA, don’t feel discouraged in applying, but make sure your essays and EC’s are strong.
I just got the news that I’m waitlisted for LS CS (And yes I know CS isnt declared).
3.76 gpa, all courses completed. Straight A’s in pre req major courses. A couple of B’s in my non language IGETC mostly A’s. First gen student.
I focused much of my essay about being native to the town of Berkeley and my community activism and growing up here , though I intentionally tried not to mention Cal specifically to not jeopardize other campuses, but now I’m dead set on Cal.
Any suggestions for what to write for the waitlist essay? Should I double down on this, or just write an outright love letter to Cal? I know nothing is absolute but it doesnt hurt to ask. I definitely will add some extracurricular I’ve been doing since the application. Also do I have to wait until June for waitlist results or do they accept people off the list periodically before then?
@DanielLB Do you have a SoCal address? I have a 4.0 aswell, to a nonimpacted major with all my prereqs done already, and was rejected also. I got into UCLA tho just like yourself, so I’m not complaining. But I feel like there’s definitely some bias towards soCal people, even tho there are people who got into both LA and Cal
