@SmartJarhead Yes. On their housing application this is what it says,
“Transfer students admitted for fall semester 2018 will receive housing priority for an offer somewhere in University housing for their first year, provided the guidelines below are followed and application deadlines are met.”
Hello @iLikeIceCream
Thank you for sharing, I am will be applying to Anthropology at UCLA, and Society and Environment at UCB. We visited CNR during the Spring break and it was the space that really sold me on UCB. I will complete AA-T’s in anthropology and communication at my CC next Spring, and have been focusing my research on the intersection of culture and environmental law.
I will squeeze in at least one of the econ classes to strengthen my application, Aaargh. Perhaps I will find a way to love it, I believe the honors econ professor at my CC requires a semester long analysis project which could make it worthwhile and possibly even fun
What summer class are you taking? I would love to know how you find CNR and the transition in general!
A little late and long time lurker… but hoping this post gives hope to future applicants! I literally did not expect an acceptance especially after I was rejected from UCLA and honestly applied to UCB as a big “what if”. The moments I saw the confetti on the screen, i began sobbing and had to close the window and reopen it to make sure I was reading it correctly… anyways here’s my brief stats.
ACCEPTED! for Spring 2019
CCC: East LA College
Major: Sociology
GPA: 3.4 (I know, really low hence why i was surprised) absolutely littered with Ws and Fs from when i majored in business at a cc I hated and realized I needed to change.
IGETC: completed
Major Prep: missing PHIL 8
EC:
worked full time while taking 19 units during my semester of applying
volunteered with a local animal shelter on the weekends
Essays: talked about my passion for helping people, my major change from business to sociology and upward trend from 2.9 GPA to 3.4 by switching schools and majors, overcoming depression and an attempted suicide-- pretty much any form of adversity and my attachment and leadership qualities within my family. i spent a lot of time editing these with counselors and spent time on them.
Accepted: UCSB (TAG), UCB, UCR, CSULA
Denied: CSULB, UCLA
@RainbowBritey Your research sounds amazing! Haha sounds like it’s the perfect combo for both of your applications. Yay! That’s really exciting to hear you say that about CNR because, although I’ve been up to Berkeley once, I never had the chance to look around the CNR area.
That’s good to hear about the econ class. Yeah who knows, I hope you end up loving it! That semester long analysis project sounds super cool.
I’m taking a class in International Environmental Politics. I will definitely come back on here to let you know how the transition goes and what I think of CNR. Hopefully my experience can be helpful to you
@goodBrujo9 if I would’ve gotten accepted for comm I would choose ucla over cal bc I’m from LA and ideally, I’d like to stay here for college. Don’t get me wrong, Cal is a great school and I’ve loved it for a long time but I was more fond of ucla because it had more to offer for the things I want to do. They have a great film program, which is what I would’ve minored in and it’s close to production companies, which would be good for internships (i want to work in entertainment). ucla was tied as my top choice with usc so now I’m just waiting to hear back from them. all in all, whether i end up at usc or cal, I’m really happy with the options I have bc I know I’ll get whatever I put into the school i go to
@dwightsbeetfarm as you might already know, the entertainment industry in LA is mostly based on who you know and who you party with, it’s all politics. I’ve worked in entertainment for 4 years. You should go for the best education, which is definitely at Cal
@dwightsbeetfarm thank you for responding! I’m deciding now between Cal and UCLA for Comm and media studies and feel the same way about the courses and the minor in tv and digital media. I also live in LA so it’s been tough. I’m also waiting to hear back from a Annenberg which is my number one choice if I don’t get into my reach number one, Stanford.
However, I keep getting people like @Imoulse100 in my ear saying it’s crazy to turn down Cal because it has more reach internationally. It has crossed my mind I may want to leave America and land a job in a forgein market and Cal is more recognized. Also, The history, the legacy…I love San Francisco. I’m really torn. I know for sure if I get into Stanford I’m going. Coming from my background it would be insane not to. If I don’t get in, and get rejected from USC, I feel like Cal is the Stanford of UCs and it would be crazy not to attend. I wish there was a thread of people making this decision.
Has anyone had issues with CalCentral? I created a summer session account before I got in and then once I got admitted everything is whack. It thinks I’m somehow a transfer, freshman, and summer session student all in one??

Hello I am planning to apply this fall. And I am in your same predicament as I will be applying to 5 UCS but with different majors. How did you go about answering the personal insight in regards to your major? I am asking this as it is kind of hard being specific with the preparation done for the major(s) but without being too explicit for one or the other major. Thank you in advance!
@goodBrujo9 good luck with stanford! my only concern with cal is the fact that i have to declare the major there. I’m not sure exactly how competitive the media studies major is there, but it does freak me out a lil that it’s not set in stone
@melania Hi! What are the majors you are thinking about applying as? For me, I knew that Berkeley was my top choice, so I made sure that my major essay would primarily be about that major.
Since my major was Society and Environment, I wrote primarily about what kind of things I wanted to learn about at the UC that would help me make some sort of contribution to society in the environmental field after I graduated.
Because Geography is also in a similar realm in terms of humans and their environmental impact, I was set there. The other majors were both essentially international relations, so within my essay I emphasized how the issues I wanted to focus on were global and how important I believed it would be to get exposure to international experiences.
Hope this helps a little! I’d mostly just suggest writing with your target school’s major in mind while trying to incorporating features of the other majors into your narrative about the primary major. Just let me know on this thread whenever you have any questions or message me, I’m happy to help!
@dwightsbeetfarm I spoke to a girl today who works in housing who is majoring in Pol Sci. I asked her about declaring media studies (my major) and she said it’s relatively easy and she knows people in the program. To her knowledge no one gets denied. It’s mostly making sure you’ve met the pre reqs to apply. at my CCC I’m taking a History course now just for Cal. I also took a Mass Comm class at another CCC over winter to meet another. If I go, I’ll have them all done so I’m not worried about it. If you’re missing any, just take them the first semester you arrive.
Hi guys! I’m going to be attending UCLA instead. How do I decline my admission offer from Cal? Do I just click “Withdraw Application” in the portal? Thanks!
@Shagunbali - Make sure that your SIR for UCLA goes through completely and successfully before withdrawing your Cal admission. It is a precaution because once withdrawn it will be impossible to reverse.
