UC Davis Class of 2029 Official Thread

Welcome prospective Aggies. It’s that time of year again as the UC application has now opened and submission starts October 1 through December 2 for this admissions cycle. I am @Gumbymom one of the two UC Forum Champions/Moderators. My Co-Forum Champion is @lkg4answers and we are knowledgeable on the increasingly complicated UC admissions process and hopefully we can help any prospective UC applicants with their questions. We both have students that have attended UC Davis so please utilize our knowledge of the campus by posting your questions here.

UC Davis like all the UC’s are test blind and will use 13 areas of criteria to review Freshman applicants. Each campus will weight the various areas of criteria differently so one size does not fit all. The UC application website has plenty of information that can help determine if UC Davis is a good option when applying.

Freshman (First year) admission information:
Major choice is an admissions factor for the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, College of Engineering and the College of Letters and Sciences.

Students applying as “undeclared” or “undeclared/exploratory” are considered within the college/academic department to which they applied.

Applicants are encouraged to list an alternate major, but not in the same area as the primary major. Occasionally, UCD admits to the alternate major.

Selective majors include Data Science, Design, Psychology. Landscape Architecture and all majors in the College of Engineering.

New Business major available Fall 2025. Target enrollment for Freshman applicants is 175 and for students planning to change majors after admission, a 50 student limit is proposed.

Best of luck to all applicants.

Hello. Thanks for this thread. Super rich in information. One question. Where is it stated that psychology is a selective manor ? When we checked on the school I couldn’t find that information and also the school admissions team doesn’t indicate that as well. Can you help clarify. Thanks :folded_hands:
UC Davis is my Ds first choice for psychology.
@Gumbymom @lkg4answers

The 2024 UC counselor conference mentioned that Psychology was a selective major for UC Davis.

Ok thanks. Interesting. So from your other thread, undeclared social sciences for UC Davis might help with admission, but registering for courses for psychology might be harder since it’s impacted. Is that right ?

Yes, getting major specific courses for non-majors could be problematic.

Very few psychology lower division courses are restricted at Davis. The problem with it being a popular major is that the courses fill up quickly. Also, note that Cognitive Science majors need to take many of the same courses as Psychology majors. That makes it even more difficult to enroll.

The UCD website lists Eligibility to Declare Psychology Major as:

Completion of PSC 001 and PSC 041 with a combined GPA of 2.5 or better (all courses must be taken for a letter grade) OR you may take three upper division PSC courses with a combined GPA of 2.0 or better

Looking at the Course Catalog,
PSC 1 is not restricted and does not have any pre-requisites
PSC 41 is not restricted, but does list pre-reqs as

Prerequisite(s): PSC 001; PSC 12Y, STA 013, or STA 100 strongly recommended.

PSY 12Y, STA 13 are not restricted. STA 100 has two quarters of Calc (MAT 16B, 17B or 21B) as pre-reqs.

Having some AP credits might help with course registration as you can be ahead and start with PSC 41. That said, UC Davis need a AP score of 5 to get credit for PSC 1.

Davis allows up to 13 AP/IB credits when determining course registration (pass) times. @fd97616 alluded to the fact that their daughter has taken several DE courses. I believe those units will help with pass times. However, more and more students have DE units so I’m not sure how much it will help.

Psychology lower division requirements include PSC1, STA 13, PSC 41, BIS 2A and ANT 1. None of those courses are restricted and undeclared students can take any of these classes. Upper division classes (course numbers over 100) tend to be more restrictive.

Edit to correct statement about AP/IB units used for registration pass times.

My D has taken PSC 001 already (validated through Assist) - General Psychology.
and PSC 041— Research Methods in Psychology. Both completed in Community college (as part of DE). in addition, she has a few other psyc related courses completed as well.

So this would help with registration ? Basically she strongly prefers to get admitted to UCD (her first choice actually). So we need to decide if applying as Psychology major is better, or just applying as Undecided - Social Sciences is good.

recap (for ease of access)
3.67 unweighted.
3.96 (weighted capped UC GPA)
4.12 (weighted uncapped UC GPA).
Strong extra cirriculars
12 college courses in community colleges (A-G)

meant to say this -
My D has taken PSC 001 already (validated through Assist) - General Psychology.
and PSC 041— Research Methods in Psychology. Both completed in Community college (as part of DE). in addition, she has a few other psyc related courses completed as well.

So this would help her with declaring her major, if she gets admitted as Undeclared - Social Sciences (after a quarter) ? Basically she strongly prefers to get admitted to UCD (her first choice actually). So we need to decide if applying as Psychology major is better, or just applying as Undecided - Social Sciences is good.

UCD does consider alternate majors occasionally so she could apply for Psychology as the primary and Undeclared social science as an alternate.

UC Davis changed (somewhat) how they assign registration pass times. The verbiage on the website now allows for up to 13 AP/IB units.

Registration pass times are assigned based on earned credits. The earned credits considered are completed and graded courses, articulated transfer work, and up to 13 AP/IB units. For earned credit hours to be factored into your pass time, they must be processed before pass times are assigned. Students with more earned credit hours will be assigned an earlier pass time than a student who has less. For example, students with senior standing will register before freshman as they have more earned credit hours.

Some students may qualify for priority registration such as students with disabilities, TRiO scholars, foster youth, etc.

In the past, the point of not using AP/IB was to even the playing field for students whose HS did not offer AP/IB. My guess is that the vast majority (if not all) of new admits now have 3-4 AP courses. If so, adding up to 13 units doesn’t give a significant benefit when it comes to pass times. It just moves the bar to the right for everyone.

@fd97616 I’ve seen students who enter with a lot of lower division requirements completed by DE and AP who have difficulty getting the classes they want? Why? Because they are essentially trying to get the same upper division classes as students who have many more units than them (ie. college juniors).

If your daughter is admitted, I don’t believe she can declare a major until her 2nd quarter. By that, I mean that she would have to meet with an advisor while she is enrolled (ie. first quarter) and get everything processed so that she is in that major second quarter. If she has already taken biology, statistics and anthropology then she would likely start her first quarter with GEs.

Thanks @lkg4answers and @Gumbymom for your inputs.
As psychology is selective major at UC Davis, my daughter is considering applying as undeclared - Social sciences - hoping that will increase the chances of her admission. (she really prefers UC Davis). I read your inputs around registration pass times. My daughter also has a disability that we need to go and talk to the admissions office, and see if they can help with any assistance - around the location of classes and registration windows- since she cannot walk or bike even reasonable distances.

one key guidance we need clarity -
to increase the odds of admission to UCD.
Would applying for undeclared - social sciences be a smarter move as the first major choice. Also would providing an alternate major from the same social sciences category that is non-selective (like Sociology) help - with the hope that she can transfer into psychology once she joins and after a semester even.

thanks,

Have you visited UC Davis? It is the largest UC campus by area.

Classes (especially the first two years) are in the larger lecture halls all over campus. They aren’t centralized by department or major.

Also, the dorms are on one side of campus and the Social Sciences & Humanities building (aka the Death Star) is on the opposite side.

Yeah, we took a tour and saw all the buildings. We were told the registration preference can help. Since my daugther really like the uc campus and vibe, and culture, thats her first prefrence. Hence we are checking to make sure we are selecting the first and alternate major carefully to increase the odds of admit.

This information is from the UC application guide regarding campus selection.

Does applying Undeclared have any bearing on an applicant’s chance for admission?
Applying Undeclared or Undeclared/Exploratory does not affect admission.

For which programs is the Intended major a factor in admissions?
Major choice is a factor for the College of Agriculture, College of Engineering and the College of Letters and Sciences. Applicants are encouraged to indicate primary major interest for any College to which they intend to apply and indicate a non-selective major as an alternate.

Does the campus consider students for alternate majors?
Yes. Applicants are encouraged to list an alternate major but not in the same area as the primary major (eg. 2 majors in the same College). Occasionally we admit to the alternate major.

This information can be found here:
UC application guide starting page 27

My son is considering applying to UC Davis in the College of Letters and Science as “undeclared.” Does anyone know if applying undeclared is viewed as a weaker application compared to specifying a specific major - especially since he has many AP and college courses that map to a specific major (but he isn’t sure if he wants to major only in that area). We wanted to make sure undeclared doesn’t make the application weaker.

No, applying Undeclared does not affect admissions chances and does not make the application weaker.

Thank you for the response.

I am having some confusion how Gen ed requirements are met for students coming in as undeclared vs a specific major for the same college - of L&S.

for example.
student A comes in as Undeclared - Social sciences
student B comes in as Sociology

Would both students take the same Gen Ed requirements for the first year ?

And assume once A completes the gen Ed requirements, can proceed to declaring a major (not sure if they have to wait for a specific time period before declaring major).

Please help clarify. Thanks a lot for the help

General education requirement are courses that are required for all students in addition to their major requirements.

Are you thinking about lower division courses for a major?

yeah. thinking about the lower division courses. Even if you come as undeclared, or declaring a major (in same college), I assume the Gen Ed requirements remain the same, and if coming in as undeclared, post 1 quarter, we can submit a request to declare major (assume we meet the prereqsuites).

Also is there any place where I can find the undergrad admission data (applied, admitted, enrolled) broken down by major ? in UC data hub, I see my broad categories like social sciences etc, but not by major. thanks

No, UC Davis does not make that data available. Only a few campuses are that transparent.

Yes, GE requirements are the same for everyone and every major.

Each major has different requirements for what you need to complete and when you can declare a major. As I mentioned before, at UC Davis, there are very few lower division, entry level courses that are restricted to majors only. I think you are looking for a problem where it doesn’t exist at UC Davis. It might be a problem at some UCs but, in general, it is very easy to enroll in lower division courses, declare, and change majors, at both UCD and UCSB.

Look at the UC Davis Sociology page. Just like for Psychology, it lays out what a student needs to do in order to declare a Sociology major.

What do I need to do to declare a sociology major?

Completion of one SOC course, either lower or upper division, with a grade of “C” or better, is required for students wishing to declare a major in sociology or sociology-organizational studies. If you have fulfilled this requirement, you may initiate a Change of Major petition through the Forms & Petitions tab on the UC Davis OASIS portal. If you haven’t met with a sociology advisor, we strongly recommend making an appointment with one of the department undergraduate advisors to discuss your change of major in addition to submitting the online form.

If you haven’t, you might want to look at this article which was written by the ED of Admissions at UC Davis.

my Kid is looking at majors related to human development / social work. We are considering a few optons. in college of Ag and sciences, the human development major. If they opt for this as a primary major and get in, if their interest move towards political science or sociology for example in College of Letters and science, is that transfer/move in UC davis possible and easy ?

how about the Gen Ed requirements between these two colleges ? thanks

@Gumbymom

The University General Education requirements are the same regardless of College/major.

You can research and compare the specific College GE requirements here: College of Letters and Sciences GE’s

College of Agriculture and Env. Sci GE’s.

Yes, the change of majors and colleges is possible at UC Davis.

Change a Major

To change from one major to another within a college, you need the consent of the department or committee in charge of your proposed new major and the approval of Undergraduate Education and Advising in the Office of the Dean. Admission into a major program may be denied by the program or by Undergraduate Education and Advising in the Office of the Dean if your grade point average (GPA) in courses required for the selected major is less than 2.000.

Procedures for change of major within a college are the same as for declaration of major and the same conditions apply. If you wish to change to a major that has admission restrictions, you must comply with the special procedures and requirements for that major.

To change from one major to another in a different college you need the consent of the department or committee in charge of your proposed new major and the approval of the dean of the new college. To obtain that approval, you must be in good academic standing, meet all minimum GPA criteria, including those for the major, and satisfy any other admission requirements established by the new college.

In general, it easier to move into a major in L&S than it is to move from L&S into another college.

Anyone else getting an error when trying to create an account for the portal?

With UC Davis you need to wait 15 minutes before you can sign in.

Same issue. Were you able to create the account?

Not yet. I found people having the same issue a year ago and they just waited a couple of days for the records to update in the system then it worked. I’ll wait until Monday or Tuesday and try again. If it doesn’t work by Wednesday then my son will give them a call.

This is what people said about it a year ago:

It’s working now. Successfully created account in the portal.

From the link above, generally, the student need to meet the Topical Breadth and Core Literacies requirements.
Although, the GE requirement is the same for all students. The “missing GE” that he/she need to take outside his/her major could be difference. For example, an engineering major would meet all the Science and Engineering GE requirement by just taking classes required by the major, so he/she will need to take GE classes for Arts and Humanities. On the other hands, a history major would meet all the Arts and Humanities GE requirement by taking classes required by the major, and need more Science classes to meet the GE requirement in Science and Engineering.

Also, notices that, unlike other UC campus, UC Davis does not give GE credit for AP classes. Credit from AP classes can only be used for Major requirements. For example,
AP Calculus AB/BC can be used for meeting Calculus requirement in the major. However, I believe, all majors listed Lower Division English Writing as major requirement and therefore can use credit from AP English to meet the English writing requirement.

Also, the general Class search tool and a GE specific search tool are designed to help student finding GE classes.

https://registrar-apps.ucdavis.edu/courses/search/index.cfm

Below is a picture of Class Search tool, the Course Summary window shows what GE requirement the class meets, if any.

Finally, when student login to their “school account”, there are information showing what GE requirement has met, in progress and still missing.

Topical Breadth: 52 units required

  • Arts and Humanities: 12 to 20 units
  • Science and Engineering: 12 to 20 units
  • Social Sciences: 12 to 20 units

Core Literacies: 35 units required

Note: If a course is certified in more than one Topical Breadth area, you may count the course units toward only one Topical Breadth area.

Note: If a course is certified in more than one Core Literacy area, you may count the course units toward only one Core Literacy area.

I found this tidbit in their press release particularly enlightening:

The university will offer admission to fewer students than those who applied, and a smaller number of students will accept those offers

Yes, that is true for every university unless they accept everyone that applies. UC Davis had 98,834 Freshman apply for 2024, admitted 41,353 and enrolled 6,767 according to the UCOP data from the Freshman admission summary.

I am having trouble withdrawing my application. When I click on “Cancel UC Davis Application” and then check the box to certify the cancellation, there is no way to confirm the change, and the check box resets after refreshing the portal.

You can contact admissions about withdrawing if you cannot cancel using the portal.

UC Davis admitted student day is called Aggie Day. This year it is on April 5. Most of the other UC admitted student days are April 12 and 19.

If you are interested in Aggie Day, you might consider booking a hotel now. Check the cancelation policy in case you change your mind.

And if you have the chance, I would absolutely recommend that you go to Picnic Day on April 12th. It’s so much fun. I don’t even have a kid at Davis and I went last year and had a blast, and would be going this year if we could. Here’s my writeup from last year.

when can the decisions come out?

For 2024, decisions were posted on March 8. UC Davis has not given prior notice when they will be posting decisions the last few years.

I am guessing the result will be posted on March 7 (Friday) based on last year date.

Still remember that was a sad day for S24. First got waitlisted by UCD and then got rejected by UCI

What did you end up doing?

Given UC santa cruz gave few acceptances last Friday.. i am hoping they might release today?

UC Davis historically has posted decisions around the 2nd Friday in March. Most likely either next Friday the 7th or the following Thursday or Friday.

S24 ended up came off UC Davis’s waitlist and attending there now. But after we paid the admission and housing deposits to uDub :expressionless:

Coming off waitlist is common among UCs. Many applications got accepted by multiple UCs and they can only attend one after all. Good Luck all.

are uc davis decisions gonna come out this friday? or is it more likely to be next friday

I think so, they posted countdown message on instagram.. @Gumbymom Have they done this earlier years too?

Exciting! Have they done this before? Could this mean before Friday do we think?

I did not follow UC Davis admissions on Instagram until late last year so I cannot say.

i hope it does!

Does UC Davis update portals for decisions or do they send it via email?

All UC’s will update the student portals with decisions and will also send an email to have the student check their portals.

In general, the portals update prior to the email but not always.

Thanks, I heard that the UC Davis decision is given in the email or subject line itself (for example subject line congrats etc). Kind of doesn’t let the student check on their own timing if in the middle of class or something.

Yes, some campuses will include the decision in their email and that email content can also change from year to year so until decisions are out, no one will know for sure what UCD’s email will show.

Someone on Reddit posted they got in, Environmental Science w/ 3.5GPA

Edit

My daughter received Regents :confetti_ball: It was in the portal when we scrolled down. She was admitted for English.

Do your children have any connection with Design students? Sadly never met one on my campus tour or any info session. Pretty fascinating that it is the only UC with a major of that type (except maybe UCLA’s DMA)

One twin got in for his alternate major Managerial Economics, the other did not for EE.

That individual did not state if the 3.5 GPA was weighted or unweighted plus they received a supplemental review request so there may have been some extenuating circumstances mentioned in their application. Kudos to them.

I am assuming you are asking about the UC Davis Regents since that is discussion you are posting on currently? Yes, it is the most prestigious merit scholarship awarded that includes many benefits including priority registration, honors college membership and housing.

However you cannot make any assumptions in receiving this scholarship for UC Davis specifically in that you will receive the scholarship at any other UC campus or it reflects your chances at admission at other campuses. Each UC campus evaluates Regent scholars based on their own specific criteria. Congratulations if you received the award.

Do Regent scholars still get priority registration? Someone who is at Davis and applying for the Honors program says they ended priority registration for honors.

I know that UC Santa Barbara no longer gives priority registration to Regents and Honors college students. I am not aware that UC Davis ended the priority registration also.

The Honors college website still states that priority registration is available to the Honors scholars.

  • What does priority class registration mean?
  • UHP students register during the first day of registration for fall, winter, and spring quarter during their first-year on campus. This does not include On-Campus Admits.

I may be mistaken then? I’ll ask my friend (her child is a freshman and applying to the Honors program now) about it the next time I see her.

9 posts were split to a new thread: UC Application Review Process & UC GPAs

If you look at the FAQ section I listed on my post about the Honors college, it states for Priority registration that This does not include On-campus Admits so if applying as a current Freshman for Sophomore year, priority registration is not a perk but I would get that statement clarified.

Thank you. Unfortunately, my reading comprehension skills have declined over the years.

Yes, it looks like she has been accepted to the Honors program. Congratulations to her.

I can’t log in to my UC Davis admission portal anymore. It goes to a page that said “Forbidden.” Does anyone else have the same problem? I was admitted.

I can login.

I’ve gotten an email invitation to celebrate with UCD admitted students in LA on March 22 and San Diego on March 23. But now I can’t login to my admission page anymore. Hmmm…

Their portal has been having issues. Some students saw forbidden; some saw the landing page for admitted students. The congratulations page was back again after a bit.

Everyone saw this page.

Anyway UCD tells you in your acceptance letter if you receive the regents scholarship and honor program

Samesies, its been like that since yesterday

Hasn’t been like that today, for us.

My daughter is in the UHP, class of '28, and shared some changes to the program that were shared with current students by the UHP admin team. New, direct admits to UHP–those selected during admissions–will get priority registration for their first year only. (Those currently direct-admitted to UHP will continue to get priority registration for the duration of their membership in UHP–i.e., four years if they stay in the program.) She could not confirm the details for those who apply to UHP after admission.

My D got admitted into L&S. I am not able to get the right information about double major / minor options. If she is interested in pursuing a major in Business, it looks like she cannot do that, since UCD doesnt allow double major into business now.

can she do minor in technology management offered by the business school if she is a major in L&S ?

please help. thanks
@Gumbymom @lkg4answers

Just to clarify, she is not admitted into the New Business major housed in the Graduate School of Management but into L&S for which major? The Technology Management minor is available to all Undergraduates and it is housed in the Graduate school of Management.

Yes correct. Admitted to l&s undeclared but will declare psychology soon. Good to know technology management is open for all.
Was also wondering about managerial economics in college of agriculture.

She could double major or minor in Managerial Economics and it would be best for her to talk to an academic advisor during Freshman orientation so she could plan out her schedule to include either minors or another major.

Can anybody talk about the bioengineering program at Davis, and how it compares to the program af Cal Poly SLO?

my daughter just got off the waitlist (~ 4:30 pst) for neurobiology. Hearing some waitlist decision activity for a bunch of UCs today.

I have son who is accepted at UCD for L&S - Undeclared: Physical Science. He recently was accepted off the waitlist for UCSB (also undeclared).

Looking at the majors/minors for UCD there are a large number which combine: Math, Computer Science, Economics, Technology, Engineering, Management, etc.

Managerial Economics, Applied Math (has some Engineering/Programming aspects), Mathematical and Scientific Computation, Mathematical Analysis and Operations Research. Just to name a few before listing Minors and/or combining with an Engineering Major.

I realize that this is research that we could have done before applying, but he is really undeclared and feels like UCD offers the opportunities to combine some interests.

UCSB has Math/Applied Math/Econ in the college of L&S with no chance of switching into an Engineering major/minor…and that seems to be it.

Am I missing something?

I can also post this in the UCSB thread.

FWIW…I also have graduates from UCB (EECS) and UCLA (Math) who both did not go onto pursue further degrees.

My point being that UCD seems to offer a well-rounded undergraduate math/cs/econ education that is hard to get at the other UCs (excepting the UCB MET program). Opinions?

FYI my son was accepted yesterday off the waitlist for civil engineering in state. He’s already committed to cal poly SLO…but can anyone speak to the civil engineering program at Davis? I know any UCs will be more theoretical whilst SLO more applied. Curious about the major though.

It does not look like you’re missing anything and it appears that UC Davis is the best fit for him especially the flexibility in pursuing the different areas of interest. My advice is he should attend the school that meets his goals academically, socially, financially and where he would be happy, since happy students will be successful students.

Just curious if everyone has been receiving emails (at least 3 so far) about the deadline to cancel the housing contract - just seems odd to be receiving so many?

Yes, I think they are just trying to make sure everyone who has signed up for housing is really attending so they can start the matching process. There is a lot of waitlist movement in May and early June.
