“Keep in mind that the GPA is only ONE academic factor.”

O.K. Sure I’ll buy that. But he’s also finished IGETC and half of his major reqs. He has no W’s, he’s under the unit limit and has demonstratable extenuating circumstances.

You have to agree that it’s a shock that someone like this would be denied admission to UCSD. We’re not basing judgments on one academic factor in this case, I could understand otherwise. It’s the result despite a combination of factors that surprises me the most.

This probably happens every year: also with 4.0s who get rejected from certain schools. WE DONT HAVE THE FULL FILE. Making any assumption about someone’s rejection without a full file is not a good path to follow. UCSD didn’t just reject him for no reason, and if they did, it was an error and he can get in on appeal. I’m interested to see the results of his phone call.

Also, the fact you mentioned that he finished “half of his major reqs” shows you don’t understand parts of the UCSD process, since they don’t screen for prereqs for his major.

woow. I’m gone for a day and I have to read three pages worth of whatnot…well anyhow… time is really flying! I cant believe that this is all coming to an end. I SURE hope is goes well…I think I’m gonna check UCSD…

“Also, the fact you mentioned that he finished “half of his major reqs” shows you don’t understand parts of the UCSD process, since they don’t screen for prereqs for his major.”

You said it yourself, the entire file needs to be considered. And prereqs can be considered. I understand the point system well, Gabe. Lets not get patronizing. While the process from admitting freshmen and transfer is different, it’s still worth considering that freshmen courses taken beyond the basic UC requirements are considered for UC admission. It’s not far fetched to say the same would apply to transfers in their major prep. And even if your right, it doesn’t hurt his application. Thats all I’m trying to say.

I too am looking forward to the phone call because as of now I see no red flags

Matt–you just said: “the entire file needs to be considered”! So we agree! And we have far far far from an entire file in front of us with Tom.

I don’t base anything I say about transfer admissions on some kind of strange extrapolation from freshmen admission; the info on transfer admissions, about prereqs, etc., is widely available.

Of course you don’t see a “red flag” yet, because you haven’t seen the entire file.

WILLDO= I like UCBerkeley better than UC Davis. I like a lot of action going on around me. UC Berkeley reminded me alot of San Francisco, while Davis was nice and laidback. both schools were nice.

…at which school, which major, etc. etc. And in fact, the only actual cutoff gpa is the minimum: the UC minimum is 2.4. Many programs have 2.8 or 3.0 minimums however.

what if you have below a 2.8 at the time the application is due, but you get a 4.0 during fall and winter. Would you think they took the WIP grades into consideration even though you had a low GPA when the app was due in Nov?

I think it depends on the school. I know Berkeley, for example, is considering me even though I had a 1.7 when I applied; however, they were the ones to take the initiative, and they called me about it. Also, I made sure to put on my application in as many places as possible that my GPA would be improving. If you at least hinted at that on your application, I think you should be okay.

Unfortunately, I think most other UCs will simply throw your application away as soon as they see that you are ineligible in any way without an obvious explanation. I’m pretty sure that’s what UCLA did to mine.

Ok, I’ve checked the UCSD website too many times over the last few days. No more. BTW, my EFC is around 3300…is that good? I have no freakin’ idea.

My Stats
3.35
3.91 last semester…2.33 first semester.
IGETC
AA in pre-communications
MiraCosta College…highest UCSD acceptance rate
Married, 2 kids…I’m old, 29 to be exact.
Applying as a media-computing major to UCSD.
OK EC’s
I am not feeling confident…

Do re-entry students have a priority in admission ? One of my friends told me that I got rejected because of my age. I doubt about it because I think I should have a priority since I am already 29 year old. I wish it was not the reason I got rejected. Anyway, really want to find out the answer tomorrow when I call UCSD.

My transfer counselor told me that me being 29 would play an advantage because I stood out from other students. He also said that a 3.2 was essentially a shoe-in, so to shoot for that. He said that UCSD does not put much emphasis on the esssay for transfers. Lastly, he mentioned that impacted majors play a big part in admissions.

BTW, UCSD gives married students affiliated housing priority so I think they are welcomed.
