@mahpnad When did your portal update?

I already posted this on the UCSD thread, but I feel like I might be waitlisted at UCI too. I told my family friend who works at UCB admissions that I was waitlisted at UCSD, and he said that waitlisters are usually great, highly-qualified students. But what all the UCs do is over-accept OOS students, who are usually less qualified, so they can get their full tuition for a year (yeah, just ONE year because they are CA residents after freshman year). They want to see how much $$$$$ they can squeeze out. There’s seriously nothing wrong with the waitlist kids. I mean, they aren’t going to be the regents kids, but he said it’s usually random kids plucked out of the accepted pile to make room for OOS. This reeeeaally sucks

Holy crap I’m done. I will be super shocked and depressed if I don’t get in now. I also applied for information and Computer Science. My GPA is 3.75 and SAT is 1950 and ACT was 25 (one and done, plus I didn’t study or submit this score). And I have 1000+ hours from coaching tennis, playing on the tennis team, and some club work. Solid essays (had great feedback from other people who read). But congrats to you @mahpnad

It’s just wrong that they’re basing admissions on $ rather than talent/academic achievement. I can guarantee you know other state would do this

*no

@brokencoconut
Do you mean for OOS or just in general?

If you mean just in general I’m not so sure that’s the case. My dad doesn’t consider us rich but he earns over 150k annually.

@Canon7130 some OOS are taking the spots of more qualified CA residents, and it’s not really fair for either of them

@Canon7130 OOS tuition is higher the first year and there’s no financial aid for them. It’s not based on income

Yeah it sucks a lot that it is so money based, but we can’t forget that the UCs are funded by the government. Berkeley is already in debt, and with money comes advancement. As much as it sucks to say, money is what helped these schools become as great as they are (money to hire better professors, build better infrastructure, etc.). The other option is raise our California taxes by even more.

Does anyone know if you’re allowed to question a college why you were rejected after the fact?

@klp777 there’s no question the CA government has some major issues, but the taxpayers who fund their public schools deserve a fair shot

@Canon7130 Yep you can ask that question. They will probably give you a very general answer like we had so many qualified students apply this year… But you can definitely ask and hope for a solid answer you can use.

@amy989
Thanks it’s because I’ve already seen so many people with lower stats (they’re still decent stats, not saying they are bad) than me get in, and the guy that just posted his acceptance recently has a way lower SAT score than me and applied for the same major…This has been bugging me for a while now.

@Canon7130
You also have to take into account a person’s personal statement. Of course, everyone is just going to say that their ps was “good” and “excellent” but who’s to say that the content actually met the criteria. Maybe the person admitted wrote about an extraordinary struggle that they had to overcome. Not trying to start an argument, but i’m just saying that there are other factors to take into account, other than just grades and test scores alone.
