Hey guys guess what - just got into Boston College! Super excited about that
A
@kaitlynwang I got into ucr, UCD, UCSC, UCSD, UCLA, and UCSB with below stats and barely any EC. I am a talented writer though, so my essays about my life were 100%. Still waiting for uci and Berkeley. 6/8 accepted.
@orionary What were they? mine was 1420 SAT
I’m pretty sure being committed to an EC is better than having a lot, but how many should we be committed to? I only have a few ECs but it’s kind of broken down because I’m a band kid but I’m in three separate musical groups and I do tutoring but a lot of different kinds
Is there a chance for tmrw or is it Monday?
@SmartGurl17 Someone I know contacted an admissions officer and said they will start tomorrow if everything is running smoothly.
@Gumbymom …please help me understand this…my d has 3.95 10-11th gpa (W) and 32 act. She has amazing extra curriculars robotics lead 4 yrs, peer councelling, ASB, girls in engineering (all leadership positions), also district wide leadership roles. Has taken 9 AP’S and 1 college class. Is applying everywhere in cogsci…only comp sci in Riverside. So far got in UCSC, UCR, and Waitlisted in UCSD. Why are places like Davis and SB completely passing her over? Is cogsci a very competitive major? Do you know how competitive cogsci is at UCI? Thank you!
@plsUCI so tmr for freshmen right? No more for TAG?
Yeah, overall it is a very holistic process. I had a stellar SAT (1580), but my UC GPA was a 4.0 (good but not all that above average at most UCs. Not to mention having two Fs in my record. Yikes). My ECs were fairly average too, but with those stats, I was able to get into UCLA, and regents at UCSB, UCD, UCR, and UCSD, so I suspect my essays played a pretty vital role.
@Mitali wow, nice! Many congratulations!
Maybe it’s her essays…who knows? I read her essays, thought they were fine…but idk
@Mitato you were probably a URM. There’s no way you should’ve gotten into those places with F’s on your record instead of me.
I’m also an Asian male going into Bio, so the odds weren’t necessarily in my favor. Just glad things went my way in the end. At first, I was fearul my two Fs would cost me a shot at even getting in some of those UCs, but low and behold I got in with Regents. So don’t lose faith y’all.
@jj1999 yikes, you arent an admissions officer to be making that call, maybe you had weak essays
@jj1999 I’m an Asian male. I would hardly say URM is working in my favor.
Does anyone know how competitive cogsci is at UCI?
Which school is better for chem? UCI, UCSB, UCSC
@Mitato @jj1999 actually it is possible cuz he clearly did it. i’m pretty sure essays did play a huge role cuz if you had 2 F’s and your gpa was still that high you prob pushed your ass off. everyone likes a good comeback story.
Sorry bout that comment though, I’m just salty about taking L’s from 4/5 of the UC’s I applied to. I wouldn’t say my essays were “garbage” as all of you think. I worked with a former journalist who also helps with college apps, and he said my essays were some of the best he’s read, and he’s not joking when he tells me about all the bad essays he reads. If they were bad, he would make me redo them over and over again. I just don’t know what went wrong with my application.
@Twins2000: Her W GPA of 3.95 puts her at or below the 25th percentile for UCD, UCSB and UCSD and her ACT is right around the 50th percentile or higher. The UC’s are also very GPA focused.
UCSD’s Cognitive Science program is one of the top programs in the country so I would say very competitive. Being waitlisted will probably result if she is admitted off the waitlist as Undeclared.
She looks like a well qualified applicant but it all depends upon how she compares to her peers and how each school weighs each part of the UC application.
I do know that Cognitive Science is a fairly new major at UCD and they do not accept many applicants. For UCSB, they weigh 50% academics and 50% EC’s and essays but know little about their Cognitive Science major.
I have stated this many times, that each UC is unique and they are looking to admit a diverse student body the “fits” their campus. After 5 years of following UC admission results, there is definitely no predictability when it comes to acceptances.
UCI Average UC GPA and SAT score (no data for ACT) for Cognitive Science last year was 4.04 and 1554.
For 2017:
Applicants: 539
Admitted: 256
So good odds she gets an acceptance to UCI.
