***UC Irvine Class of 2022 Applicants***

@whateverrrr what are your stats ?

After work last night at 1am, I checked both LA and SD portals to find rejections so that was fun. Irvine is my last hope

My kid is pretty depressed now. Accepted at UCD, waitlisted at UCSD and Northeastern, and rejected at UCLA so far. Computer Science declaration at all (UCLA was Computer Science in Engineering only). 4.05 UC GPA, 1540 SAT, 35 ACT, 10 AP classes, candidate master in chess (2172 currently). His mother passed away 2.5 years ago which screwed up his first semester sophomore grades which he wrote about extensively.

He’s depressed because chances are UCB (dream school) is going to be a stretch, and Carnegie Mellon too, based on what happened at UCSD and UCLA yesterday. He can pretty much rule out Stanford at this point. Seriously thinking about finishing off school at community college (he’s taken 10 classes already) and re-applying the following year if this trend continues.

@ProfessorPlum168 I applied CS at UCD, UCSD, UCLA, UC, Cal Poly SLO and some other privates. I got rejected at UCLA, accepted at UCD, waitlisted at CPSLO, and accepted for my alt. major at ucsd. And I have to say everything will work out in the end of this process. If he applied to the College of Letters and Sciences at Berkeley he has a much higher chance than at UCLA because the major is uncapped. Also I wouldn’t count out his chances for any privates. I thought I had no chance at getting into privates but found out this week I got into Cornell for CS in the College of Arts and Sciences. UCLA and UCSD are extremely tough for engineering, so you shouldn’t discount his chances for other schools.

may I ask what your stats were

@dpkrcy who?

So happy to see the portal back online (not just a scary white screen), however still no update and no messages.

@ninehazard thanks for the encouraging words. He did apply for the LS CS for UCB. He’s not a hardware guy, he likes programming and teaching. He’s already a prominent chess teacher already, makes good money at it. Now that you mentioned it, he probably should have given more thought to the alternate major. Maybe he should have put undeclared for every school… My niece has a 4.2 UC GPA and 1530 SAT, and she got waitlisted for UCSD and UCLA, accepted at UCD and UCSC (all Biology). She did also get accepted early for UCI (Honors).

Do you guys think the portal will crash again before the real acceptances come?

I know I won’t be able to enjoy my weekend when I keep stressing out with UCI. After seeing all the stats posted here, I realized that my chances of getting in are very small. I want to cry. Again.

@professorPlum168 My S was accepted at UCD, Chancellor’s Invite at SB, WL at UCSD, rejected from UCLA. Chemistry major, 4.17 UC GPA, 4.6W GPA, 36 ACT, COSMOS program, NMF, etc. It’s impossible to predict what each school is looking for, and we’re pretty frustrated here too.

@Knight4stars Someone who got accepted last year said it did crash like yesterday a few hours before decisions came out.

Applying to UCs might’ve been a mistake for me now.

@ninehazard You have no idea how much your post made my day. I was so distraught after being rejected yesterday by UCLA; not because I thought I was “too good” for it, but because in my school’s history, every applicant above a certain GPA has been accepted, and my GPA is well above that number. I thought something was very wrong about my application, when perhaps I was rejected just because I declared Computer Engineering as my major. Disappointing, but thank god I didn’t declare computer science as my major in the rest of my applications, and I hope the coming weeks will bring better news.

@ProfessorPlum168 This year was brutal on acceptances. UCSD had over 116,000 Freshman and Transfer applications. On top of that, somewhere around 30,000 Freshman students got in for Fall 2017, which is very irritating to the 5000 accepted this year.

@lenasharb A lot of my friends that are in the mid to high 4s for their GPA got rejected or were let in Undeclared. Engineering was especially hard to get into this year.

Someone made a Facebook group too! UC Irvine Class of 2022 College Confidential https://www.facebook.com/groups/232396583972841/?notif_id=1521264556923421&notif_t=group_r2j_approved&ref=notif

Did UCI release during the last week of March in the past?

@lenasharb I think this is just a bad year to apply because of the great number of Y2K kids. Every Asian (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean) parent wanted a kid in the year 2000. At my kid’s HS, the graduating class will be well over 700, last year and the previous years it was 500. This year there was over 50 National Merit semiFinalists (my kid barely missed the cutoff) at the school when ordinarily there is around 25-30. My neighbor’s kid who went to school with my kid all of their lives did a smart thing - they did some early enrollment thingy and she started attending UCLA last year. I wished I knew what she did.

Oh well, the next couple of weeks won’t be fun.

The population in California is just way too high to fit all the smart students. Solution: build more UC’s!
