I didn’t mean to say that students with low GPA shouldn’t apply. Students are more than their GPA. There are many students out there with low GPAs that deserves to be accepted, perhaps UCs should be accepting students with even GPA distribution then holistic review would make more sense.
All my friends from “back in the day” had more AP, better GPA, but didn’t get in to UCI or UCLA, so I don’t see what you are saying.
I was referred to as the “miracle kid” and for years a school legend for getting in. I was given a chance and I fully took advantage.
I get that people “who did everything right” didn’t get in. But at the end of the day, I agree the number is overwhelming and it’s becoming a lottery. Some time we just get lucky.

On that note, if you want to continue this discussion, I suggest you start a new discussion thread in the UC General Forum.
Thank you.
S still unable to access his portal and apparently needs to call IT Dept to fix that but he got an email this morning inviting him to join the Campuswide Honors Collegium. Am assuming that means he was admitted??
Yes, you can assume he is admitted.
Congratulations!!
Understood, my apologies!
UCI is pretty solid academically for most tech majors.
I will say though, as D22 is in her 2nd year at UCI. And as you may have heard, there is not much in the way of campus life / community at UCI. It is a ghost town on weekends. My daughter likes it, but she admits it is a commuter school.
Thank for information.
We live in orange county, not far from Irvine.
My son got in CS engineering and CHC .
We are waiting for other schools but i didn’t expect to get in CS yesterday because cs is crazy to get in any schools.
I mean, they are, they are accepted to UC Merced. But then people complain that they “only” got accepted to UC Merced, which offers an excellent education with professors that are usually just as talented as those at other UC campuses. But people don’t want that, because other people go there with low GPAs. Which kind of makes the paradox clear. People want to be accepted to an exclusive school, and I understand the motivations for this, but it isn’t something the schools can really fix.
Thanks for confirming!
I agree that they transparent about their average freshman profile and by demographics. But they aren’t sufficiently forward about the admission variations by major. I think they only give details in a general combined way for transfers.
If all majors were the same that would be fine. But for impacted majors it makes a huge difference in where the student should be applying. A student seeing that the overall freshman admit rate for UCI is 27.7% on the main UC admission page is unlikely to expect that their major could be less than 5%. That factor of 5 for Eng/CS/Biz students means they need to apply far more widely than they might think.
The only reason I can guess that they keep this obscure is because they don’t actually want students picking majors “strategically”, they want students picking majors by their actual interests and talents. I agree it has the side effect of people misunderstanding their chances and maybe shooting too high at too few schools for competitive majors.
Among the UC campuses, Irvine just happens to be one of the most transparent about admission selectivity by major. It’s right here on their admission dashboard, use the pulldown to select “Majors”: Undergraduate Admissions | Office of Institutional Research | UCI
Although it doesn’t further break it down by GPA, it does give a LOT more detail at the per-major level than you get from most UC campuses.
Yeah, that is nice. I didn’t even come across this while searching. So, certainly not well advertised and not general to the UC system.
If the UC’s had a simple breakdown by major under their individual freshmen admissions pages, or on the general UC profile pages, students would actually know their chances. They may not wish to discourage students from applying to some majors, but it is their duty to temper expectations.
Oops, only counted her 10th/11th grade a-g.
Actual total a-g classes was 44 semesters (including Senior year)
Actual UC Approved Honors: 2 semesters in 9th, 10 semesters 10/11th, 6 semesters 12th
My daughter applied for nursing (BSN) as her first choice, but she got accepted in her second choice - Biological sciences. Does anyone know if she can start in Fall with Bio major and re-apply to the BSN program for her 2nd year?

Why is Nursing Science a restricted major?
We receive a large number of applicants annually and are able to accept only a limited number of these students. The limited number of spaces in the program is based on the availability of required clinical placement sites. What if I am not admitted into the Nursing Science major?
Students not admitted to our program may reapply the following year. It is possible for you to be admitted to UC Irvine but not to the Nursing Science major. If this happens, admission will default to your second choice major. How many spaces typically are available each year?
The number of students admitted as Freshmen, Change of Major, and Transfer students each year varies. The program goal is to graduate 50 students per year.
i am an intl admit to business administration, any other business adm people out here?
Have you ever been to Merced?
The city or the campus? I’ve been to both. However, this is the UCI thread and I don’t want it to pivot to a discussion about UCM. There is lots of discussion about the pros and cons of Merced (both the city and the campus) on the the UC Merced forum.
