A post was merged into an existing topic: UC Irvine Class of 2029 Waitlist and Appeal Discussion
Hey everyone, struggling with a college decision and could use some input. Out-of-state student choosing between:
- University of Washington: Undeclared Engineering, $4200 total scholarship.
- UC Irvine: Mechanical Engineering, $15,000 total scholarship.
Net price would be about the same.
College sports aren’t a factor. Weather is somewhat important (leaning towards warmer). Any thoughts or experiences with either program/university would be greatly appreciated!
UCI would fit what you are looking for. UCI has warm weather and minutes from the beach. UCI probably has better academic reputation (I’m guessing since UCI is in the top 10 national public university.) It is better off to go with the UCI since you already got accepted to your choice of engineering major while you only got in as an Undeclared Engineering at UW which means you have to take a certain courses in your desired Engineering major, meet a certain GPA, submit change major form, and hoping that you can get in your choice of Engineering major when engineering majors are pretty impacted at a lot of universities, so changing major to your choice of engineering major might be a challenge and risky chance of not getting into your desired engineering major due to it. Congrats on your acceptances and good luck in making the suitable decision of where to attend!
does anyone know if students who get off the waitlist also get guaranteed housing?
UCI did not guarantee housing if the student was admitted off the waitlist but missed the initial housing deadline. That deadline is May 2 for this year. I would contact the Housing office since the situation could change each year.
Student admitted to school of social sciences and major admitted to is: Social Policy & Public Service. If we want to change the major to psychology b.s is that doable and easy ? Student has likely met all pre requirements already through cc classes. Can you help shed some light of switching to psychology is easier or hard and how soon can we switch ? Thanks a lot. @Gumbymom
Here is the change of major criteria for Psychology BS. The student usually needs to attend 1 quarter before they can start the change of major process and since the student has CC classes that would meet the required courses, I would work with the academic advisor during orientation to plan the change of major.
Cumulative UC GPA: 2.70 GPA and 2.00 GPA for the quarter prior to changing major
Course grades: Completion of PSYC 9A, PSYC 9C, and three lower-division science courses (from Requirement B) with a GPA of at least 3.0 for those five courses.
Please note that if she is interested in doing a double major in Business or a minor, Freshman orientation would be a good time to discuss the possibility. Business Administration at UCI is highly impacted so it would be helpful to be proactive.
thanks for the detailed explanation. Super helpful.
the change of major to Psychology BS requirements would differ to BA ?
so a student should complete both PSYC 9A, PSYC 9C (they sound the same ? ) and three lower division courses from here ? (Requirement B - referred here - B.S. DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY | Cognitive Sciences | UCI Social Sciences)
And regarding Business Adminstration, good call out. this is if we want to do double major ? And if we choose to do a minor instead, then assume that it would be earier ? Business Minors | Paul Merage School of Business | UCI
This is the change of major for the Psychology BA. Edited Psychology BA program no longer offered for in-coming Freshman students.
Cumulative UC GPA 2.70 GPA and 2.00 GPA for the quarter prior to changing major
Course grades OPTION A: Completion of 2 psychology courses with at least a “B-” in each course. One course must be Psych 7A, 9A, 9B or 9C.
OPTION B: Completion of 9A-9B-9C and 2 Psychology core courses with an average GPA of at least a 3.00 in these 5 courses. Cumulative GPA 2.00
I do not know the specifics of the Psychology course requirements, just what is listed by UCI change of major criteria: School of Social Sciences
A minor in Business administration is probably more achievable than a double major but that is something that needs to be researched since impacted majors will have course restrictions for non-majors.
I’d say UCI because you are in a declared major in a warmer weather school with a little more scholarship. However, I do know a few engineering/other students at UCI that have had some difficulty finding work or handling the work load. That can happen anywhere and by anyone, however. Each person will differ.
By the end of Spring 2024, UCI was no longer accepting new students to Psychology BA program. UCI only offers Psychology BS after that term.
Thank you for the information. Interesting that nothing is mentioned when you look up the major information on the website but after searching I found the information listed on Instagram.
Hello group
My kid is a major in school of social sciences and wants to take minor in innovation and entrepreneurship minor (offered by UC Irvine business school). I was told the 7 courses needed to complete the minor is given a priority for business major students. Wanted to check how easy is it to register for this minority courses. Is it very hard and only can be taken in summer or is it possible to take during regular quarters
Daughter committed to UCI, Computer Engineering.
congrats! can you share stats, ecs?
I just off the waitlist for uci. the housing was due on may 10th apparently. am i still guranteed housing
I have same concern …my son got off recently too
Housing was not guaranteed for waitlisted students last year but priority is given to new in-coming Freshman. I would contact housing for the most current update since the housing situation can change.
I got off the waitlist last week and submitted my housing contract today, is it guarenteed that I will get housing? If I get housing when will I know room assignments?
