I don’t think that’s true UCs are forgiving about both and you can’t have too many of both
If you have an F or W you’re able to the retake the course but an F to a passing grade just shows improvement. There are lots of reasons why people take Ws and it is overlooked so idk how that would look bad.
Fs can also drop your GPA while Ws don’t. If they had an F and their GPA was too low then that’s bad.
@PartyKicked Same. Other biology majors already got accepted through the first wave though. I just wish tag would at least send the rejection letter today bc then we’d know we still have a chance in the regular applicant pool instead of hoping we’ll somehow get accepted through tag in the upcoming days.
I got my acceptance yesterday as a TAG applicant for Biological sciences major!!
I have been following this thread for over a week now and I am pretty sure everyone will get their decisions up shortly since they already started releasing them. So, don’t overthink it (even though I know how challenging that might be)
@hoshizora thats why UCI doesn’t allow students to drop a class after the second week. At UCI and I want to believe at other UCs you need permission from an academic counselor to drop a class after second week. Students must submit critical information that proves any kind of interference with academics. For that same reason, they want to narrow “the many reasons” a student can have a W on a transcript. And I want to say that not all the time these request are approved. There has been instances where the request are denied and students are stuck with a class potentially getting an F or whatever grade
Hey guys! My friend got accepted yesterday. Her major is Business Administration. I think she is in the H2H program. I’m also applying to UCI with the same major as her but I didn’t tag or H2H. I haven’t heard back or anything…
@C105213 the drop deadline just depends if you’re in semester system or quarter system it’s not just UCI. The policies are at least similar at most colleges UCI isn’t special at all. From what you said, if you have a proper reason Ws aren’t bad at all. Again, UCs are generally forgiving especially Ws.
@hoshizora yes the drop deadline is different and many community colleges also let you drop a class after the deadline without consulting an academic counselor. You are free to drop it and get a W. Whereas at UCI you are not allowed to drop a class after the deadline without consulting an academic counselor. You actually must submit paperwork that shows why you can’t afford to take the class. And there has been plenty of times where these request are denied and students are stuck with a class they will fail or get a grade they aren’t looking for.
An F is ignored when you have receive a better grade. The F never happened. A W is permanent even after you retook the class. Academic counselors especially question transcripts that have Ws in classes that were tried for again. Because they know community colleges let their students drop classes freely. Not at UCI.
A W is not better than an F but with an F you still have the opportunity to get a better grade. And the new grade weighs in on your GPA. The F no longer weighs on your gpa.
That maybe true for UCI but when transferring Ws are treated the same way at any campus. The F also doesn’t disappear it still stays on your transcript. You’re just able to show improvement vs. a W would just be dropping a class for whatever reason. Ws also get replaced when you take the class, it just doesnt factor into GPA because it never did in the first place.
Again even if the withdraw policy at UCI is more strict that won’t make a difference in the weight of Ws or Fs on your transcript it should be evaluated similar anywhere. Within UCI still, if you need a proper reason for a W I still don’t see how that would be seen as “better” than a fail.
I think W is not really gonna be affected by your admission. I got admitted with tag in biz econ major and I had 2 W and around 3.6 GPA. I’ve heard that UC really does not care about W. First of all, they care about GPA, they don’t really care how many W you have. Because I have a friend who transferred to UCLA 2 years ago with 1 B and all A with 8 W.
@Daywon this makes me feel so much better. I have like 8 W(s) because of an undetected illness. I thought the W(s) would keep me out… Glad to see that they won’t.
Got in for business econ a couple days ago. I’m most likely going to go to UCI and I’d love to get to know some people before transferring so follow me on Instagram! @iamryanhong
Good luck to those still waiting on decisions!
