UC Living??

of all the cities of all the UCs, which do you think would be the coolest to live in?

San Diego! definitely not Berkeley  sorry.

westwood .

Westwood / San Diego / Davis

i had the same question. So between Davis and SD which is better? what about SB?

What kind of question is this. Obviously westwood has the highest standard of living. The list goes on forever: Safest area, booming business, fashion, food, museums, 8 miles from beach, weather, mansions, architecture, next to a vibrant LA and Hollywood culture, prime real estate, country clubs, sparkling clean campus, and countless other favorable living conditions. Still, it’s a preference question because many people would ignore the highest quality of life surrounding campus to go to a school with a higher quality academic reputation.

^the ■■■■■ strikes again! OP didn’t ask which city has the highest standard of living, he simply asked for the “coolest” city to live in, which is a matter of preference, not based on factual data on the city w/ the highest standard of living (which also obviously means the highest cost of living). and so most students would prefer living in another uc city while studying to save money instead of blowing tens of thousands while living in westwood for a few yrs

@vintij i dont care about “standard of living” im simply asking for everyone’s opinion on which city they think they would enjoy the most.

Like for me, Berkeley would be the coolest city to live in, sure its run down and some may even call it “ghetto” but when im there, i just really enjoy it, when i was over at LA,it was nicer and all, but i absolutely hated being there. I’m just asking for ppl’s opinions, it’s nice to see the perspective of others

for me it be

 1. Berkeley
 2. Santa Barbara / San Diego

@Don2009 personally id choose SD over D, just cuz its near a beach whereas D is central Cali, SD also seems more diverse to me, and it has great mexican food, which i love. SB is amazing dude, its such a beautiful area, and u have the beach, and really chill ppl. It all comes down to where u feel at home tho, so go with w/e makes u feel the best. You can’t study unless ur comfortable. =)

Isla Vista. You have the rest of your life where you can live in the Westwood area, La Jolla, Berkeley, etc. Isla Vista is the only city California that is basically run by the undergrad population and has all the perks and amenities specifically for undergrads. Places like Westwood might be nice, but I don’t think undergrads are going to spend weekends at the aforementioned country clubs :)

I’ve graduated and since moved on to Sacramento, but I’ll have memories of Isla Vista forever.

LA, SD, SB. I’m not going to lie, berkeley is hella grimy and smells like BO on some streets. maybe, it’s the hobos. Plus I go to berkeley weekly since i have a class there. So I’m growing tired of it. oh and it’s filled with annoying canvassers. but i still wanna go there… how odd.

LOLL @ edbraga, I know what u mean bout the griminess, its hella janky over there, but it still nice

Okay. So a high standard of living is not cool anymore? Great, go live in the slums as long as it’s hip.

Places that have a high standard of living aren’t necessarily places that are conducive to an exciting college community living environment. See La Jolla and Irvine as great examples for this. Places like this are family oriented, typically resent noise and activities of college students, and don’t provide a lot of gathering areas for students off-campus to congregate. Westwood does provide a lot for college students so I think UCLA is a pretty vibrant student campus.

However, Isla Vista was unique since it is practically student-exclusive, and living within a mile of almost the entire campus population was great. Not to mention the multiple 24 hour eateries two blocks away, the beach, many hang out spots, etc. I don’t think I ever got into my car while going to UCSB, except to go to Costco or a doctor’s appointment.

The actual city of Santa Barbara, as much praise as it gets on this forum, is pretty “meh” for a college student. It’s too tourist focused, shopping and restaurants are geared more toward the affluent population, housing is way out of the price range for students, etc.

well when ppl talk about SB on here, arent they usually referring to Isla Vista, I know i am.

Berkeley. There’s hardly anywhere on Earth as diverse as the Bay Area. Plus, Berkeley is near SF. Living in SF and going to UCB would be ideal for me. Then again, I’ve lived just south of SF my entire life.

I guess I see a lot of people say that Santa Barbara is beautiful, but Isla Vista itself is really in a different world from the downtown Santa Barbara area, and it’s somewhat grungy and reminds me of a “small town” version of Berkeley.

Davis = Cow Country. Sorry :)

@aznxboix7

I was just at UC Davis last week for five days visiting a friend. I did not see (or smell) one cow while I was there, and I had an amazing time there – all five days. We had something to do every day I was there. The campus was good looking and the town was gorgeous. Overall, I wouldn’t mind going there at all.

Davis is a giant complex hidden in a beautiful forest. Nature wise, it’s great. I’m a city guy though.

Uh is it so wrong that I’m already looking for places in berkeley. hehe
