UC Merced Honors Program (+ Bobcat grant question?)

So I got accepted into UC Merced this week (yay!!), and today I got invited to apply to their honors program (or just sent the link. I don’t know if it’s invitation-only). Does anyone have any experience with the UCM honors program and the benefits it provides vs. being a regular undergrad? I’m applying anyways since the application’s pretty easy and crossing my fingers I get in.

Also, about financial aid, and the bobcat grant specifically: does it help out “donut hole” families at all? i.e. high EFC so no financial aid, but can’t afford in-state UC costs without financial aid.

I’m not committing to UCM by any means, it’s a last-resort, I’m just a worrywart who’s scared she’ll get rejected from every private college she’s applied to. I like to have all my ducks in a row and all the information I possibly can.

Everyone can apply, all incoming freshman are invited to apply.

There are definitely some benefits that can be found on the UC Merced Honors Program website: Benefits | University Honors Program

You are lucky to have, as your ‘last resort’ school one that has recently been ranked as one of the top 30 public universities in the country. U.S. News Places UC Merced Among Top 30 Public Schools Following Top Social Mobility Ranking By Wall Street Journal | Newsroom

Congratulations!

edited to add - I understand not everyone is into rankings, but UCM is ranked in other polls quite highly as well.

Thank you!

Just to be clear, it’s not a last resort because I think I’m better than the school- it’s a last resort because, of the schools I’m applying to, it’s the least affordable (according to the UC estimate), but also the easiest to get into.

That’s great to hear. I believe the Bobcat grant is the same as the Middle Class Scholarship from the state- here is info about the 24-25 income ceiling that may be helpful:

The amounts will vary based on your family’s ability to pay, but here is additional info: Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) | California Student Aid Commission

Depending on your stats, you may certainly qualify for more aid through a private university. I hope the privates you’ve applied to come through with merit that makes them affordable for you and a place you would be happy to attend! :crossed_fingers:Good luck!

Please contact the Student Aid Commission via the UC Merced information for the bobcat description. Types of Grant Aid | Financial Aid.
You may be able to have access to funding via the CalGrant Program. Requirements change from time to time, as far as income levels, so the State may fund you.
Make sure to fill out the FAFSA application by March 30 to qualify for California state funding.
