UC Merced vs CSULB

Hello, I’m trying to decide a college that I want to go to, and I’ve narrowed it down to these two options for me. I got into UC Merced under applied math (emph on data science) and CSULB under Business (info systems). I want to know which school would be better for me based of these programs as well as the pros and cons:

UC Merced Pros:

  • UC
  • Closer to my house, easier to get home quicker
  • Study abroad program that I like
  • Less competitive school (easier to stand out?)

UC Merced Cons:

  • A little more expensive (~ 6K more)
  • Not much to do in Merced
  • Bad dining food?

CSULB Pros:

  • A lot of family that lives in the area
  • Slightly cheaper
  • More things to do in Orange County
  • Well respected CSU

CSULB Cons:

  • Competitive housing & limited parking
  • Lacks study abroad program I liked

Those are very different majors. Which do you prefer, and have you checked the availability of, curriculum of, and difficulty switching into the other at each school?

I equally like both if I’m being honest. At CSULB if I wanted to switch majors it would probably be easier since math isn’t impacted. UCM I’m not too sure.

If you are still unsure as you start college, then you need to take first semester courses that work toward both majors, so that you will not be behind if you switch.

I wouldn’t consider study abroad.

All schools have it - but if you’re looking at instructor led trips, they don’t all go.

Last summer, my daughter’s trip didn’t go and an alternative at Case Western also didn’t. I looked at the UC list and many were cancelled (they need minimum participation).

This year - her school trip was again cancelled and she will be going through a different college - who can only go because she was the 10th student (meaning they met the minimum) or it would have been cancelled.

If you’re going to be at another actual university, those typically will go - because that physical university is already there.

And most, if not all schools, have affiliates or work with other programs such as USAC or CIEE.

So I surmise you’ll have plenty of opportunity to find a suitable study abroad no matter where you attend.

CSULB seems to have those other out of school opportunities like anyone else.
