UC San Diego Class of 2029 Waitlist and Appeal Discussion

Yes, as I stated if you approach it the right way, it could get approved. Good luck.

My son got waitlisted at UCD and UCSD, and accepted to UCSC, can we opt in to both waitlists?
Would it impact his chances at other UC’s, or his if he accepts the UCSC?

He can opt into as many waitlists as he wants and it will not impact his chances at any UC’s or other schools.

Students on the waitlist are expected to enroll in another school by May 1.

When you opt into the waitlist, they ask for a third choice major. The drop down menu in this option is all non-impacted majors.

Is it possible to leave the second alternate major blank in the waitlist form? I only want to attend ucsd if admitted to my first choice major.

Yes, I am assuming you can leave it blank since this is the first year UCSD is asking for a 2nd alternate??? There is no harm in listing another major since you have the option to decline the waitlist if you are not admitted into your choice major anyways. It is not binding.

We left it blank too, and never had an alternate major listed. Son only wants to go if he gets in for his major.

ok great! all of the cognitive science majors there are pretty impacted right?

Impacted for UCSD is Selective. Cognitive Science is not a Selective major. It may be a popular major but not on the Selective major list.

How exactly is the waitlist ranked? Is it by GPA or do they have another way of doing this? Also I heard there is a upward trend of waitlist admits over the past few years. Would you say it is true this year too?

The UC Counselor conference information stated that UC’s do not rank their waitlists however on the UCSD CDS, it states it is ranked. How it is ranked is only known to admissions. UCSD’s CDS is the only one that states they rank their waitlist out of all the UC Campuses.
Edit: Admissions confirmed it is not ranked

You can see the data at the top this discussion which has the waitlist admits for the last 3 years. 2024 had 4600 admits, 2023 had 2261 admits and 2022 had 2400 admits so really only 1 year of an upward trend.

There is no way to know if the trend will continue since each year is different. After May 1, UCSD will have an idea of how many spots are available and then begin pulling from the waitlist but no one can speculate how many will be admitted.

Just saw that a student emailed admissions on another site and they stated UCSD does not rank the waitlist so the CDS is incorrect.

Confirmation from another poster stating admissions emailed them back that the waitlist is not ranked.

My friend and I both got waitlisted by UCSD. Is it helpful to write a letter of continued interest (love letter) to the school? Is there any restrictions?

You probably can and should if it allows you to. Some schools like USC, is clear that they do not want any additional information from deferred applicants.

UCSD does not accept LOCI’s or any other documentation from waitlist students. Opt into the waitlist and move on.

UCSD does not accept any additional documentation .

if you are accepted off the waitlist, will freshman housing be available or filled up

The housing situation can change from year to year. UCSD guarantees housing for 2 years for all in-coming Freshman if they apply by the deadline. I would contact housing directly and ask but for previous years, waitlisted students received housing but not necessarily their first choice preference.

Since it is “not ranked” can we assume that the waitlist is “first on, first off”?
