UC San Diego Class of 2029 Waitlist and Appeal Discussion

No not first on, first off either.

Well, these secret methods are maddening.

@Gumbymom My daughter is in the process of writing her 250-word appeal essay for UCSD. She was asked to submit the Fall 2025 Application Information Update during the application process. She submitted it 5 minutes before the deadline, but when she checked the portal, it said that her application update was received on February 1 instead of January 31. We are not sure if UCSD considered her updates. Do you think this is something she can mention on her appeal? How about being a recipient of a national award (computer related) received recently? Thanks.

The time stamp for the submission of the update may not be exact but if she submitted the update close to the deadline, it would have been reviewed.

UCSD is looking for new and compelling information not originally presented in the application or update that shows she is a stronger applicant than presented. Definitely mention the award and she can mention she submitted the update as requested.

Do we know what factors UCSD considers to admit off the waitlist? I understand they admit based off of the University’s needs, but what does that mean beyond major distribution? Demographic and geographical distribution needs? Higher GPAs? In state vs out of state?

None of the UC’s are transparent about their waitlist process other than to say it is a continuation of the original application review and what meets their institutional priorities.

Congratulations on Berkeley. There should be an option on the Triton link portal to decline the waitlist. If not, then contact admissions.

if a bunch of people at my school decline ucsd and were in the same major, would that up my chances of getting off?

Wondering the same thing! Or people in my town who applied to the same major. The don’t disclose so I am guessing there is really no way to know.

When is the earliest that we will hear back from the waitlist for UCSD and UCI? I’m sure that one year some heard back in mid april. I’m in state so I would prefer to attend a uc instead of out of state and am not sure if I should commit to one of the schools that I got accepted at (purdue) now.

@askew13

UCSD admits far more students than enroll so a large percentage of students need to decline their acceptance before they go to the waitlist. For 2024, UCSD admitted 35,916 Freshman and 7,337 enrolled so that is over 28,000 students that decline their acceptance.

Again, only admissions will know the chances of getting off the waitlist by May 1.

You should expect the earliest to hear from the waitlist is May 1. If enrollment is not meeting the school’s projections then they can go the waitlist earlier but there are no guarantees so get excited about your other options and plan to enroll there.

do certain majors tend to get off the waitlist more than other majors?

Selective/Capped majors have a lower chance but it all comes down to where the school has open spots and why they asked for 2 alternate majors to be listed when opting into the waitlist this year.
