UC San Diego Class of 2029 Waitlist and Appeal Discussion

UCSD in 2022 started something new by denying some waitlisted students early and kept others on the waitlist (short list). In 2024, they asked waitlisted students if they wanted to remain on the waitlist instead of denying some of the waitlisted students and shortlisting others.

just a thought

the ucsd website said waitlist decisions for transfer will be out by july 31. in that case, do you think it’ll be out by june 30th for first years?

Colleges use enrollment management tools to make budgetary plans each year and reach enrollment goals. These are helpful/necessary to gauge acceptances, fill classes, complete budgets, facilities management and space planning for classrooms, dorm space, etc. These resources are helpful for schools to do their best calculation to reach their yield goals. Waitlists are used by the schools to reach these goals for the incoming class.

Many things can affect student enrollment, and IMO this year, given the current financial/economic climate, more families may be unable to afford the tuition, room& board and fees this coming year. Add to that the likelihood that visa challenges/uncertainty may affect the international student enrollment. This is in addition to the other factors that affect “summer melt”, when some students decide to take a gap year or get off a waitlist and into another desired school. So I think many schools may go deep into their waitlists this year to fill their classes. Sometimes there can be apparent “times” (e.g when a parent cannot pay the first set of fees by the due date), though the movement across schools too can make this process fluid.

So please don’t feel that a WL spot is a “rejection” or that the school is somehow playing games in some way. That is not accurate. Yes, schools are businesses and have to meet their business goals and models, but if the school is able to find spots, or needs to fill spots to fill their class, admissions offers will be made! Good luck!

Thank you for giving us some hope! The waitlist experience is an emotional roller coaster.

thank you for the input!

a few people are also saying that more people will get off the ucsd waitlist this year due to new housing. what do you think of this?

Kid got admitted off the waitlist today. Out of state, into first choice major and college. It was unexpected and we are a little confused. Has anyone heard of this occuring so early?

Congratulations to your Son!!! Does he have until May 1 to accept?

For UCSD, in the last 3 years all waitlist admits heard in May after the SIR deadline but other UC campuses have admitted off the waitlist prior to the SIR deadline in the last 3 years. The UC’s as stated use enrollment management tools that help predict their enrollment targets each year so if UCSD saw that the enrollment numbers were not meeting those targets even this early, they will go to their waitlist.

@RC1616 can you list the accepted Major/College?

@earl1971 can you state if your student is In-state, OOS or International and Major for students waiting to hear?

My D25 also just got off the waitlist. She is OOS, got in for Business Economics, which was her first choice major. She also got into Warren College, which was her first choice, but she didn’t really know how to pick a College.

have any in state students gotten off the waitlist? is there a pattern regarding which majors are getting off now?

so far from cc and reddit it only looks like oos students are getting off

congratulations to those who got off the waitlist! however i am wondering why they are letting out of state students off first. why is this?

They pay a lot higher tuition. Also they might be under their target for OOS enrollment.

oh makes sense haha. hopefully we hear for in states soon!

If they increased housing, they probably also simultaneously increased their offers of admission. So the increased housing may not make a significant difference in the number going to the waitlist. Instead, the number declining admission/acceptance is the key factor IMO.
