UC Santa Barbara Class of 2028 Official Thread

Yes, it was well attended. Admissions spoke and then the Chancellor. We thought both were great. Next there was a panel of students, Professors and Deans. They answered questions that applicants submitted when filling out the RSVP. There were informal break out sessions after. I think they said it went on until 3. Many representatives/staff/students were available to talk with after. It seemed to be informal. We left after the presentations.

It was fun to see the students stand and be told they had been admitted to UCSB!

Just a note, I live in Pittsburgh, PA and I was invited to the reception. I’m not really sure about the boundaries for the geographical areas, as I’m around 6.5 hours away from NYC by car.

Some additional stats from the event for those who are interested and not covered. UCSB received around 100K 1st year and 20K transfer applications for Fall 2024 term. Chancellor’s reception represents top 2% of the applicants and Regents Scholars represent top 1% of all applications.

Thank you for sharing and congratulations on your acceptance!

I’m not sure how they decided on the boundaries this year. For the LA reception, it looks like they invited LA and OC, but not Ventura or SD counties. Or at least no one from those counties has shared that they received an invite. I would imagine that the CA receptions are more heavily attended which could be why they invite students from a smaller geographical area.

So which is better for EE major, UCSB or UCI?

Depends on how you define “better.”

My friend’s kid will probably pick SB because he likes to surf.
My kid will pick Irvine because he likes authentic boba drinks.

Campuses have different personality and flavors which may be (for some) more important than academics. At the end of the day, this comparison/ranking is just a different shade of the same color.

This will come down to personal preferences between two excellent options.

Of course you can think about vibe, food, etc…

However, it can also be really helpful to compare the academics and curriculum for the specific major. Look closely at the major, college, and university requirements. What classes would a student take during their 4 years in college? Are there more interesting electives or options at one school? More flexibility? Different research projects? Different clubs or engineering teams?

At this point in the process last year, my son was comparing several UCs (and other schools) and he found that there were a lot more differences at the academic level than he expected. It’s not a really a question of which one is “better,” but which one fits what you want in a department and major program?

I personally chose UCSB over Purdue First Year Engineering!

thank you!! We were on spring break so my daughter didn’t get to attend. This confirms for us she got in!

@gauchoengineering I just have to say thanks. I have enjoyed reading your posts, the insights to UCSB engineering, etc. Make a compelling reason to select UCSB if admitted.

Any info on UCSB Econ pgm ? Thx

Hi rejected from UCLA and UCSD for business. What’s the chance of acceptance in UCSB ? OOS

No way to predict plus none offer an Undergraduate Business school so what is your intended major?

Each UC campus evaluates each application without knowing the status of the same application at another campus. In making admission decisions, campuses do not consider where you’ve applied or your admission status to other campuses. All campuses consider your application simultaneously, yet independently of all other campuses you applied to.

UCLA and UCSD are much higher up than UCSB. I’d say you have a good chance (especially if you were admitted to UCD/UCI)

According to the 2023-24 Common Data Set, UCSB admits about 33 percent of OOS students. In that year, 18,672 OOS students applied to UCSB and 6,092 were admitted.
