Where did you find the groups?

can you just post the url? i cant find it anywhere

hi everyone!!

i was admitted as a sociology major  UCSB has basically been my #1 school so i am so happy to have gotten in!! but i was also recently admitted to UC Berkeley and it’s been really conflicting to make a decision between the two! i was hoping to get some insight/tips from some of you on the matter. i feel beyond privileged to have gotten into Cal but i have grown to love UCSB so much that comparing the two is extremely difficult. on one hand, i am someone who is very committed to my studies/grades but also loves to go out and be social with friends… and i’m not sure if i will be able to find that balance on Cal’s campus. also I’m from norcal and have always wanted to experience living in socal. in terms of the competitive nature that many often express feeling at Berkeley, i am not so sure how much of that i can handle being someone who isn’t necessarily used to that. on the other, Berkeley ranks #2 for my major behind Harvard and i almost feel this pressure to attend because of that. i know there are a lot of opportunities for me there given its’ prestige and reputation but im just very very conflicted and indecisive at the moment.

i would rlly appreciate if anyone has any support or advice!!! thank you <3

@littlelu22

just my 2 cents: i don’t want to tell you what to do or which school to pick, but ask yourself what you intend to do with this degree.

do you want to go to grad school? if so, for sociology or something else (like law)? if the answer is yes, berkeley may be more likely to set you up for success. on the flip side, not being ultra competitive by nature in academics could cause grades to slip in that environment and make getting into another program more difficult.

do you want to settle in nor cal? consider the fact that you will probably get an internship in the area, build networks, and may take a job from that.

if the answer was no to grad school, ucsb may have you feeling more fulfilled as a whole. the academics are also excellent. both schools would be a great choice, good luck!

Many many many people get to top grad schools via UCSB. Sure, Berkeley is better but I wouldn’t go so far as to say only go to UCSB if you aren’t planning on grad school. ?

ofc, i’m planning on going to grad school from ucsb myself. the rigor of berkeley can be a good thing, that’s all

@rosebud101 Ofc! I wish you luck!

Just submitted my SIR! I had to choose between UCLA and UCSB which was really hard. But I just knew UCSB is such a better fit for me! Super excited!

What was your financial aid at Santa Barbara?

@NonTradtional i don’t have the exact # at the top of my head but it was around $21,600

Thank you - Mine is about $24,000 & I was trying to gauge where I am.
UCSB gave me the most out of all the others but I think I’m going to decline. Hahaaaa crazy tho

@NonTradtional no problem! You’ll do great wherever you choose to go

Hello! did anyone make a groupchat?

I just noticed that I got accepted for my alternate which is environmental studies, which is kinda weird since I only have completed 2 courses for that major on assist ?do you guys think I’ll be able to change to economics and accounting once I’m in there?

https://www.housing.ucsb.edu/community/transfer-student

@Somethingrndm You can. But be aware that the full Econ major is a difficult major to get into even if you had been admitted as a pre-major. Econ 10, one of the required courses, is notorious for being extremely difficult. 55% of students in the course last fall got below a B which means they failed the course (a B is required to pass). Source: https://gradetier.com/83896

Here is what the Econ page says:

“If you are a new transfer student who was not admitted as pre-economics or pre-economics & accounting, but want to pursue these majors, there may still be hope. If you still have calculus to complete, you must do that first (check assist.org for courses to take or take them here during summer). Consider taking that during the summer to get it out of the way – this would be an excellent use of your time. Then make sure to enroll in Econ 10A and PStat 109 as soon as you can to get the ball rolling. Next, come in to our office in 2121 North Hall for scheduling help!”

If you want, you can contact the Econ Department advising office as they are now completely online due to the pandemic. Talk it through with them.

Which would you choose between:

UCSB-Economics
UCDavis-Managerial Economics
UCLA-Business Economics
Cal Poly SLO-Business Administration

I gotta accepted to all of them.

Hi! Is it hard to change your major to your alternate major? After looking at the courses required for the major, I want to change to Linguistics from Linguistics-English emphasis. I want to focus on language study not literature study. I really thought I’d be studying the English language in depth. And also, can I still add a minor? I just found out they offer a minor in tesol.
