@frogluvr I talked to an admissions counselor and they told me the same thing. They only look at GPA and will not look at extracurriculars and essays
@frogluvr I have had an admissions counselor tell me as well that GPA and grades are more important than essays and extracurriculars. According to the counselor I spoke to, Admissions kinda do disregard extracurriculars because they know a good portion of transfer students focus more in school and don’t necessarily have the time for extracurriculars due to jobs or other commitments.
I had the same experience with a SB counselor when I emailed them, they said they don’t really put a lot of weight on your personal statements (they don’t really take it into account) and look heavily on your academics
from being in contact with different transfer reps over the years. more competitive campuses such as UCLA, UCSD, and UCB do, however.
Hey guys, just got an email back from my UCSB rep and he said that pre-major competition is in no way used to determine your admission. Anyone think this is weird? I kind of don’t believe it
completion** not competition oops
@sbpbs2020 probably depends on your major because it’s important for engineers
@aamandataylor you may want to post here as well:

ya right? bc how is that not taken into consideration when comparing applicants…
I don’t think the email has anything to do with acceptances, I say this from experiences I have heard of transfer students in the past.
@sbpbs2020 Thank you so much for this! I haven’t attended a 4 year previously, so knowing the time spent at a CC is irrelevant is really relieving to hear. Thanks again!
@ohm888 Thank you sm for the link!
So the UC Transfers by Major website says that the GPA range they show is the 25th to 75th percentile of admitted students, where 25% of admitted applicants had below the lowest value and 25% had above the highest. My GPA is slightly below the lowest on the range for my major so I’m hoping this means i’m ok… anyone know anything about this?
of course!
if you fulfill ALL the requirements CORRECTLY (look at the TAG agreement for reference, even if u don’t wanna TAG, it shows u exactly what they want from you) then you will make a strong case for admission. it only gets tricky when you start factoring in other schools, being out of state, etc. everyone transfers as a “junior”, and that’s based on UC UNITS, not YEARS.
@sbpbs2020 , I would think when they say pre-major completion is not a factor they only mean if it wasn’t completed in the Fall. I think it certainly matters if it’s expected to be completed with in-progress classes. They are looking at whether or not students are prepared to enter upper division coursework, and if they will graduate “on time,” I would assume. As long as someone will have completed it all by the time they send final transcripts they should be fine. It is my understanding the admission offers can and are rescinded if people fail to complete classes that were in progress that were important to the major, which tells me completion matters.
Hey guys,
last year’s thread had over 60 pages and a lot more engagement. i’m hoping to see more of that with this one, so here’s some of my thoughts on UCSB/transfer admissions in general:
USC and Ohio State reported dramatic increases in acceptances this year (not sure if only for freshman) due to COVID-19. if many people happen to get waitlisted, it may be because schools need to account for a much lower yield than normal. less students will be able to afford admission, and financial aid is a big concern in these scary times
i think we all know at this point that schools have already decided on their applicants and are holding off on their release until later this month. i’m thinking SB will either add more waitlists in, or maybe even acceptances. just my opinion, but i think it’s a positive outlook on an uncertain situation.
if you decide not to attend college this upcoming fall, i think it’s safe to assume a gap in semesters will be excused in case tuition isn’t financially smart for you right now. for example, i would only commit to enroll in UCSB since it’s my dream school, so if i am not offered admission i will take a break and apply again (next time with TAG though)
please post your thoughts, let’s give support to one another while we wait for our decisions
Wish they would release decisions already! But here are my stats even if it’s super late in the game lol
Major: Pre-psychological and brain sciences
GPA: 4.0
IGETC: finished
Major prep: honestly barely any because the old articulation for psych was still on assist when I was taking my major classes and looked at that instead. Oh well lol
EC’s: Had tons in high school, but currently work through my college as a tutor for elementary school students
Applied: tons of CSU’s, UCSC,UCSB,UCLA
Accepted: all CSU’s and UCSC
I agree! I wish decisions would be releases already. Up until a couple weeks ago I was sure I would attend UCLA if they accepted me, but now i’m leaning towards Santa Barbara
Does anyone know if UCSB’s psych and brain science major is selective/impacted?
@nic0l3j it doesn’t seem that bad, UCSB accepted 57% of applicant applying into this major last year
