Hey! Was stalking this thread and saw were the same major! Did you ever end up finishing your major prep for psych and brain sciences? I read you needed calc, bio, and chem which are also the ones I’m needing

it’s not. i emailed them @nic0l3j

Hi everyone! Anticipation is really builidng up for me during quarentine, as I’m sure it is for all of you.

Major: Psychological and Brain Scienes
GPA: 3.8

Igetc: done Spring 2019
Took every fall, spring, summer, and winter session.
Prereqs: Assit is kind of vague and says to complete as many as possible, but I know they are requirements to be fully accepted into the major, and not the school itself. But right now I am taking Bio 1, Calc 1, and Chem 2. All others were completed by Fall.

EC: 6 years as a dance coach, 2 years as a nanny working night shift hours, and (the main one im hoping helps me out in apps and I REALLY recommend for psych majors) half year as a Crisis Text Line trained counselor.

Essays: Decently strong I would say. I tried to really bring out my passion for psychology and mental health. I discussed my brother’s mental illness & suicide, followed by the actions I took to turn that pain into passion. For the helping my community question I discussed my work as a crisis text line counselor. And for the leadership question I talked about starting a new dance team at a local middle school (I think this one could have been strengthened).

Applied to: UCSB (TAG), UCI, UCD, UCLA, UCSD

Psych being a impacted major of course scares me a bit - and I know my stats and ECs could definetly be better. Good luck to all !

S

Someone please chance me lol, hoping my EC’s save me.

Major: Statistics and Data Science (not impacted so hopefully that helps my chances)

GPA: 3.59 (I have pretty decent justification behind the low GPA)

IGETC: finished

Major prep: All but PSTAT 10 and CMPSC 8 will be completed by the end of this semester. Those two courses do not seem to articulate with any Bay Area JC.

EC’s: Have started and managed a non-profit with significant global outreach for several years now, Eagle Scout (Earned after hs graduating hs), AMC 12 honor roll (hs achievement), worked part-time during the school year, have held internship positions related to my major during the summer, Tutoring positions at my cc, and helped found an Economics club at my cc where I was dedicated to teaching the basics of financial literacy and proper investing techniques to underrepresented minorities.

Applied: All the UC’s
Accepted: UCSC for Comp Sci

It doesn’t seem like your GPA is that low, it’s in the middle range of your major. you can view the data from past years on this site: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

btw SB does not look at your EC’s or essays. the more competitive campuses do, though.

@anishtheind

I don’t think that’s true. UC evaluates each transfer applicant based on a comprehensive review that includes EC’s. The only thing that differs between each campus is the weight of each factor(of comprehensive review) with respect to the selection process

i’ve actually heard from uci and ucd representatives at least that they do not read piq’s when evaluating an applicant. could be different for ucsb but i don’t think it would be.

I talked to a UCSB counselor for advice about the PIQs. She didn’t give me any because they don’t look at essays or ECs at all. Just GPA and if you have requirements done for transfers. This is unique to UCSB because other UCs will at least look at your required PIQ.

Holistic review process is only for freshmen applicants not transfers.

@hoshizora

the requirements are 60 UC units by spring, and the IGETC right?

@sbpbs2020 IGETC requirement depends on the major

@sbpbs2020 @hoshizora i’m pretty sure finishing IGETC is recommended and not a requirement but the 60 units definitely is! Also making sure to finish your English and math requirement.

Yeah, IGETC is just recommended. IGETC certification is only beneficial for GEs when you transfer.

The only things required to transfer is the minimum of 60 UC-transferable units and the 7-course pattern.

Oh I see. Idk why but I assumed that those majors that only have 2 lower div required major prep had to complete IGETC my bad!

@nic0l3j @fashionista99

I posted my stats earlier (page 3 #55) I had a 3.28 GPA when I applied but my English/Math reqs + 60 units + IGETC are done. do you guys think I’d be admitted? my major is psych & brain sci which isn’t a capped major but i’m worried my GPA was too low back in fall

@sbpbs2020 we have the same major! Their admit gpa range started at 3.37 last year, but I was stalking last years thread and saw one psych major get admitted with a 3.24

@nic0l3j

that gpa range if you read the fine print up at the top left is the middle range (25% had lower and 25% had higher)

It’s the middle 50%. Sometimes you’ll notice the enrolled GPA range is slightly lower. They’ve also been admitted but the admit GPA range would be your Target. UCSB doesn’t do holistic admissions for transfers so if you had a reason for a low GPA make sure you included it in your additional comments section. Otherwise I’d just hope for the best

Hi there @sbpbs2020 ! Sorry for the late reply! Like other members have said, the GPA range posted is the middle percentile. So there were those who were admitted below and above the GPA range. I would say that you do have a chance because you did complete the minimum requirements.

Have you at least completed the major preparation courses for psych and brain sci? Which are:

-Introduction to psychology
-1 semester calculus
-Statistics
-1 year general chemistry
-Biology for biology majors sequence
