I think large waitlists will be part of the UC enrollment management strategy for awhile and with the majority of UC’s accepting more students off the waitlists in 2023, hopefully it is a good sign for this year.
Unfortunately, there is no way to predict how many admitted students will enroll and how many spots will be available after the SIR date.
Your daughter has competitive stats so that one of the waitlists comes through for her.
In the meantime, she needs to enroll somewhere until she hears. I am hoping she has some good options.
Thanks for the response! D24 got into Calpoly SLO and UCSC (with merit), and is deliberating those options. I have a couple of questions regarding waitlists.
Do you think there will be rolling waitlist acceptances before the May 15 SIR dates?
How will we get notified about waitlist decision? Will there be an email or does D24 need to check the portals daily?
Sorry, the UC’s are not forth coming with that information but it is a combination of the original application review scores/evaluation, what spots are open and Institutional priorities.
So it isn’t a case of someone at your HS declines their spot and then they take someone from the waitlist at the same HS. I figure there must be some algorithm for how many admits/waitlists they “accept” from each school and perhaps they want to keep that consistent? Maybe not - on either front. Wishful thinking!
No, it is not a 1:1 since all schools admit more students than end up enrolling. So if UCSB’s estimated yield is 20%, then they will admit 5X as many students than spots available so a large percentage will have to decline their admission before they pull from the waitlist. UCSB admitted around 31,000 Freshman last year but only enrolled a little over 5,000.
My daughter got waitlisted for UCSD and UCSB for her proposed BioChemistry major. She has WGPA 4.6, UWGPA4.0 7APs 15Honors. She also got Early Acceptance into UCSC, UCD, Honors UCR and UCM. Good luck everyone and keep daily
I appreciate your posts and was wondering if you think my basis for my ucsb appeal is compelling enough for them to reconsider me? I am mentioning how my diagnosis of anxiety and depression impacted my freshman gpa, and how caring for my grandfather with Alzheimer’s amplified these challenges. Im also mentioning new info on how I have an internship with my sports team, continuing to do local services/organizations for an honors society, and how I am initiating organizations in my club related to my major. do you think I have a chance?
I suspect this will not be enough to be successful. You could have included the explanation about your situation in your original application and the changes in your activities don’t seem significant enough to warrant reconsideration. Ultimately, you won’t know unless you try though…
@Gumbymom
S24 is waitlisted in UCSB but got the finanacial aid email like below, Does this mean they are considering or this goes out to both admitted and waitlisted students?
'We wanted to let you know that UCSB has received your FAFSA, but that it’s currently being reprocessed by the Federal processor. This is happening due to some data issues with the new FAFSA form. Unfortunately, we’re unable to provide you with a Financial Aid Offer until your FAFSA is reprocessed.
We currently expect that we’ll receive your corrected FAFSA and be able to issue a Financial Aid Offer in early-May.
Alternatively, UCSB has developed a new Financial Aid Offer tool. This tool is currently accessible now through the Admissions Portal and asks students to answer 8-10 questions (e.g. questions to determine dependency status, parent income, student income, assets, Student Aid Index or SAI, etc.). If you submit your information through this tool, we can produce your Financial Aid Offer within a week."
The financial aid office needs to have all FA packages ready for the waitlisted students since they are given a short time to accept or decline if admitted off the waitlist.
This is not an indication of the student will be admitted.
I got this email on April 19th, which is 10 days ago from UCSB admissions.
“The UCSB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships has determined your Financial Aid Offer.
To access your Financial Aid Offer, log into the Admissions portal and select “Check My Financial Aid Status”.
Awards are estimated using information from your financial aid and admissions applications as well as projected tuition and cost information.
Please note, waitlisted students receive a Financial Aid Offer. This notice does not reflect a change in your admission status. Your Financial Aid Offer is meant to provide you with relevant financial aid information should your admission status change. The Office of Admissions will notify you by email if there has been a change in their admission status.”
Does it matter that I got it before some of my friends who were also waitlisted? Does the date of the financial aid offer have anything to do with acceptance probability?
