My daughter got Early Acceptance into UCSC on the leap day 02/29/24 for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as her proposed major. And she also got accepted into UC Merced today for her proposed Chemistry major. In addition, she got accepted today into UCR for her proposed Biochemistry major. She got in 3 out of 3 so far and has 6 more UC decisions to go this month!

Was this first wave of decisions random in terms of who heard back? or is there any criteria informing those decisions.

Historically the February admits were top applicants and possible Honors college invitees and scholarship recipients. Recently it has been more random. I do not know the criteria for the early admits vs. the regular admits in March.

It does appear random. Some high stats kids in our school are yet to hear their results.

Does Santa Cruz offer merit based scholarship?

Yes, they offer some Merit scholarships but the majority of financial aid is need-based for California students.

The Campus Merit Scholarship is awarded in recognition of outstanding academic achievement. Monetary Awards Scholars are eligible to receive $2,000 per year for a maximum of four years for freshman.

The Regents Scholarship carries the highest honor awarded by the University of California, Santa Cruz to entering undergraduates. Award amounts for New frosh are $20,000 paid over 4 years, and transfer students receive $10,000 paid over 2 years. In addition to a monetary award, scholars receive priority enrollment and priority University housing placement, provided all housing requirements and deadlines are met.

For OOS students: The Undergraduate Deans’ Awards range from $12,000 to $40,000, split over four years for freshmen.

There are also scholarships available to continuing UCSC students which all can be found on the FA page.
