UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

This was a very impressive thread. Thanks to U of C and especially Grace for taking the time to answer all of these questions. I do not recall seeing anything similar by any of the other elite universities out there in terms of their approach to CC. My daughter is anxiously awaiting the decision… now in less than 4 days.

What was the acceptance rate for the regular round this year?

Hi Grace! I sent an updating letter to my regional admissions officer two weeks ago. No reply yet. Does it mean she will not consider it? Or she missed my email? Should I remind her now, when there are no more than a week remaining?

Thanks a lot!

Do we have a date when financial aid starts rolling out?

@waddupwaddup, we have not yet posted our admissions decisions, and will provide admissions statistics and information once decisions have been released to all applicants.

@BillygotoYale, due to the volume of email updates we receive from students, we are not always able to provide a personal response to each student. However, please rest assured that these notes are read and added in to a student’s application file when appropriate.

@Rocketdamus, EA admitted students should be receiving finalized financial aid decisions within the next few weeks. RD admitted students who are admitted today will, in most cases, have a financial aid decision noted in their UChicago Account with their offer of admission, although students who are missing required documents or who submitted documents after our suggested deadline will likely not receive decisions today, and will receive their decisions within the next few weeks as we receive materials/consider your aid application.

Hey Grace! I got waitlisted from UChicago, but I’m still optimistic. Could you give me more information as to how many people are typically offered a waitlist spot and how many tend to get in? It seems like more students on CC have received waitlist offers than flat out rejections. Also, when would be the earliest date we would find out about getting off the waitlist?

Hi Grace! I’ve been waitlisted, but I’m looking to improve my profile before it is reviewed again in the spring. Is it possible to edit or resubmit any of the essays, or is it restricted to revising the accomplishments listed in the Common App? Also, like MrHopp asked, when exactly will the waitlisted applications be reviewed and when will we hear back? Thanks!

Hi Grace! I got waitlisted from UChicago as well. In past years, or this year if you are allowed to release the data, about how many people are waitlisted. Does University of Chicago usually reject applicants outright, or waitlist most of them?

Hey Grace! I have been waitlisted as well! UChicago is my first choice and I really want to get in. Could I submit some additional material regarding my academics, ECs etc. Am I allowed to submit an additional essay or two that will help the admission officers understand me better?

Should these additional materials be emailed to the regional admission officer or uploaded on the UChicago account?

HI, Grace. Another waitlisted here. A lot of us on CC are wondering about the “voluntary gap year.” Could you please shed some light on what that is, how it works, implications for finaid and merit scholarships, etc.?

Hi Grace,
As another waitlisted candidate, I too am wondering about the “voluntary gap year” just as @WasatchWriter and many others are. Please explain the option when you get the chance! Also, what does it mean when compared to the regular waitlist option.
Thanks!

hey Grace, adding on to the waitlist questions, will you notify us on a rolling basis? if so, will we hear back either way, or is it like “if you don’t hear anything by X date, it’s a no”?

Hi all, I know many of you have questions about our waiting list so I have started a new thread with information here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/1626562-advice-for-waitlisted-students.html#latest</a></p>

As for the voluntary gap year option, it is helpful for us to know which students are considering taking a gap year both in our pool of admitted and waitlisted students so that we may accurately estimate how many students plan to join us on campus in 2014. Only students who are truly interested in a gap year should select this option, and we find it likely that we will be able to admit students off of our waiting list who are not interested in a gap year as well as those who are.

Waitlisted students who are admitted are still eligible for need-based aid that meets 100% of your family’s need.

For admissions rates’ disclosures, your best bet is to bookmark the local student rag such as <a href=“admissions – Chicago Maroon”>http://chicagomaroon.com/tag/admissions/</a> or a couple of newspapers. Hoping to hear such information from the horse’s mouth has proven to be a futile exercise. In the past, today, and visibly forever!

Hi Grace!

How long does it take the admitted student package to reach an international student?

Thanks a lot!

Hi, I received a merit scholarship from UChicago; will this amount be subtracted from the financial aid UChicago will offer me, or is the merit scholarship independent of financial aid?

@ramsdale this can vary from country to country. Some international students in Canada, for example, may receive their packages within the week. We have found in the past that students in Asia and the Middle East may have to wait up to a month to receive their packages, although we send them all at the same time. So, they’re coming! Note also that all materials you’ll need to learn more about UChicago, visiting options, etc, are available in the Admitted Students’ section of your UChicago account.

@LK5D67 merit scholarships from UChicago will not impact your need-based financial aid; if you are eligible for need-based aid, you will receive that in addition to your merit scholarship, and the merit scholarship offer can be used to decrease your student/parent contribution or loans (if offered in your aid package).

Hey Grace, I know that admissions are holistic, but on a general scale, how are SAT/ACT scores considered? What is the weight that the scores hold in the admissions process. Is it very important or almost negligible? Thanks for your feedback.
