UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hi, I was wondering when we can expect financial aid packages to arrive? And if we will be notified by email or normal mail?
Also, were all merit scholarship notifications sent with the admission decision or could they come with the financial aid package?
Thanks for your help

Would you recommend getting in touch with your regional admissions counselor prior to senior year?

If so, do you recommend a phone call or e-mail? And should I say something along the lines of “just letting you know who I am?”

What would get their attention (in a positive way, of course?)

Hi Grace, I was wait listed, and I’d like to update my regional admissions officer on new developments. One thing that I’m going back and forth on is whether to share an article written about me in the local newspaper. It basically just spotlights my academic achievements in high school. I’d like to share it, but I don’t want to come off as arrogant or conceited to my regional admissions officer; do you, or anybody have any thoughts on what I should do?

Hi Grace!
I was accepted, and I wonder when is the best time to arrive for the International Pre-orientation? I know it’s early but many friends are already booking plane tickets now. It says that the week begins on the 18th, but will we have somewhere to stay if we get there on the 16th or 17th?
Many thanks!

@banditx, in a holistic admissions process, we consider SAT/ACT scores alongside many other factors in our admissions process. We do not assign a specific “weight” or percentage value, etc. to any portion of your application when making our decisions.

@Sl2014 final financial aid packages are rolling out to admitted students currently. If you haven’t received yours by the next week or so, check with our aid office to make sure all of your required materials have been received. Some merit scholarships are included in the financial aid letters, while others are sent out separately, and we are still awarding merit scholarships so it is possible that you could hear about them after receiving your aid package.

@mhammel, it is not necessary to be in touch with your admissions officer unless you have questions, but we welcome questions! Should you want to know more about the university, you’re welcome to be in touch via email.

@SmokyTheCat, you’re welcome to share this if you would like to but of course the article itself will be of limited value to us-- what will be important is your academic record, which we have seen!

@Doremi1995, congrats on your acceptance! I would definitely wait on booking flights just yet. You will receive information from the College Programming Office around June about orientation (including international pre-orientation) and will know start dates, move in times, etc. at that time.

Thanks for the information! I will tell my friends too. :D

Hi Grace.

I got waitlisted for Spring next year when I applied to U of C this year RD. Are my chances higher, lower or the same when compared to normal RD candidates.

@kaybee3, it is possible that you may have misunderstood your waitlist reply form. We do not have a waitlist response that limits students to attending in the Spring. We only allow students to begin with us in the fall, and do also have a reply option that allows you to indicate interest in taking a gap year, to join us in Fall 2015. Please contact your regional admissions counselor if you have further concerns or questions.

My letter says this:

We are pleased that you have accepted a place on our waiting list. Should space become available later in the spring, we will revisit the files of students who have accepted a place on the waiting list. If you would like to provide any additional information to the committee, you may update your file in your UChicago Account or by fax at 773.702.0661.

If I have indicated an interest in taking a gap year or clicked on “I wish to remain on the waitlist”, what are my chances? Do you think taking a gap year is worth the wait?

@Kaybee, glad to clear up any confusion. “Later in the Spring” refers to this Spring, where we note that we will revisit files of students on the waiting list should we find that we have additional place in our class.

The gap year interest is simply for us to know whether or not a gap year might be something you are already considering, so that we can know, if accepted, if you had planned to join us this fall or the following fall. We encourage students to consider this option only if you had previously been planning (or at least considering) a gap year, and it is up to you and your parents to consider whether or not you think a gap year would fit your needs well.

Do you happen to know the approximate % of students that attend UChicago and then matriculate to UChicago’s Pritzker’s School of Medicine? I would love to know! Thank you!

Can you send pictures for the supplemental addition to the application? If so, what is the limit to pictures you can send?

@kennedyiceit, the number of UChicago undergraduate students and alumni admitted to and attending Pritzker changes from year to year, but traditionally represents the highest (or one of the highest) number of students who attend Pritzker from any single college. Pritzker has one of the smallest entering classes of any US medical school (around 88 students per year) so the number is usually relatively small, but still significant as a proportion of their class. You’re welcome to inquire about this year’s number and learn more about health professions advising at UChicago here: https://careeradvancement.uchicago.edu/health/about

@Ch1746, you may upload supplements to your application in the form of pictures. We do not have a strict requirement for a maximum number, but we encourage you to submit pictures only if you think they represent a significant talent or time commitment for you as an art form (or if they are representative of other art in which you might participate, such as dance, theater, etc). Usually students who submit photography, drawings, paintings, etc select 3 to 5 examples of their best work to share with us.

Hi Grace! It’s me again.
I was looking for some tuition and fees information on UChicago’s website and I couldn’t find a clear estimate for a typical college student (I believe I did find such info once but didn’t bookmark the page). Can you give me a link to this information, or just tell me how much a typical full-time freshman will have to pay, without aid but including all tuition/fees/room&board etc.?
Also, I didn’t apply for financial aid and was not granted a merit scholarship. As an international student, are there any other UChicago scholarships that I may qualify and apply for at this point? I think none of the scholarships listed on the Admissions website apply to my situation now. :(

Thank you very much!

Doremi1995:

Here’s a start:

<a href=“University announces increases in education cost and financial aid budget | University of Chicago News”>http://news.uchicago.edu/article/2014/03/26/university-announces-increases-education-cost-and-financial-aid-budget

@kaukauna, big thanks!

Another question- Does UChicago require all ACT test scores, or can you send the one(s) you choose?

@Doremi1995, the linked article is a correct reflection of the upcoming year’s tuition and fees. There are no separate scholarships available for international students, as our merit scholarships are available to both domestic and international students.

@Ch1746, we don’t require all ACT scores to be sent, but we are able to superscore the ACT, so it doesn’t matter if one of your scores is lower than others-- we will consider your ACT superscore to be your score when we look at your application.

I submitted my financial aid information at the end of February and I haven’t had a result yet. Is there around some time I could hope for a decision?

Hi @DanielHendrycks‌, aid packages have been rolling out for the last few weeks-- I’d be in touch with college aid to see if you may be missing any material and to see if they have an estimate for when your package will be all set.
