@UChicago Can you comment on the internship and job prospects of undergrads majoring in Computer Science at the College? Is there any information on placement of students who did the joint BA/MS in Computer Science?
@ComputerAge We’re happy to help! The CSS Profile takes some time to process, but you will be able to see it through the checklist online. If you haven’t seen it, though, feel free to contact the Office of College Aid. The financial aid deadline is only in place if you want to receive a financial aid award letter with your admissions decision. You will still qualify for all need-based financial aid regardless of your time of submission.
@richmondchill Interviews are simply assigned based on the interviewers available to interview applicants. If you do not receive an interview, it is not at all reflective of your application.
@cupofgalaxy We do not use Turnitin, but we will be able to determine if an essay has been plagiarized.
@Mukigachar You can use any of our past prompts!
@pseudoprimal We have the same holistic process whether you are applying as a junior or a senior in high school. Applying for admission after being denied will not impact you in any way.
@JPinkman Feel free to add a research poster to your UChicago Account.
@asdfghjkltrish We ask that you get all your application materials in your control by January 1st. We understand that it may be difficult to submit letters of recommendation by January 1st, given winter break, so we will accept them a few days after the deadline.
@graziedellauito We will still have your previous scores!
@ThatPeprika Many schools will send those grades on behalf of the student, but we do not require them as a qualification for admission.
@trickster2212 The major’s unique blend of theoretical and practical teaching, along with varied research opportunities on and off campus, create students who are ready for a variety of employment options. Nearly all students (95%) are employed or have plans 1 year post graduation, while 11% of the 2015 graduating class were employed in a STEM field.
Hi, I was wondering if you knew roughly what percent of applicants get differed in EA. Also, is the trend generally harder to get in EA or RA?
@UChicago Hi, Can a deferred status change to accepted before the regular decisions come out? or does it only change when the regular decision comes out for everyone?
@UChicago Do Quest Scholars matriculating at UChicago need to pay the 500 dollar enrollment deposit? There doesn’t seem to be another option but from what I heard from last year’s scholars the fee was waived.
@UChicago Hi, I was accepted EA today with a President’s Scholar Award. It says that I am guaranteed $4,000 for two summers. Are there any additional awards I could be receiving in addition to that?
@UChicago Hi, I received my acceptance and FA award yesterday. A few questions about the financial aid award:
-
Is it final? I know I’ve heard before that early FA awards are just estimates and final decisions come out in April after RD. Also, I haven’t submitted the FAFSA yet (due to it being December), so my package doesn’t include federal aid. Am I guaranteed the aid listed in the letter yesterday? Also, do I need to submit 2015 tax returns after filing in February?
-
Could you shed some light on the appeal process? Does UChicago match aid from comparable schools?
Hello,
I was deffered from Uchicago. My ACT was only a 30, UW GPA is a 3.9, weighted GPA is 4.15 (or higher depending on how UChicago weights honors and AP courses), 12 extracurriculars, leadership positons in 3 (and have had huge impact on all 3 of those clubs) plus a part-time job and an internship… I also had an interview that went incredibly well.
Anyway, I’m wondering what percentage of students who applied were deffered? Do you defer more EA students than you Deny?
Please let me know,
-Welcometomylife
@UChicago Hi, I’m unfortunately one of those who’ve fallen into the Unholy Pit of Deferral. I’ve recently re-read the Activities Section of my Common App, and realized there were some updates as well as parts where the depth of my involvement wasn’t made as clear as I’d like. Would the admissions office be okay if I sent in an amended PDF of the section via email? Thanks!
@welcometomylife Nobody gets denied, everyone who wasn’t accepted is sent over to the RD round.
@UChicago Does UChicago track applicants’ visits to the school and participation in tours? I went on a tour when I was there but I never registered or signed in. i wanted to talk about it in my essay but I’m concerned that there is no real record of my visit! Any advice?
@UChicago my applicant status portal doesn’t have a checklist for the different components of my application. Is this normal? Also, is it okay for my school to send their part of the application (transcript, recommendations etc) when school reopens on Jan 4, as long as I’ve submitted everything on my part? Thanks
@UChicago Hi, How do I (or my counselor) send the midyear report if I was deferred? Is there a way through common app or my uchicago account?
@UChicago Hi Grace,
I was wondering if admission commitee print out the applicants’ files and essays to review them or just view them on computers?
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Hello! Hope you’ve had a great holiday season.
So I was thrilled to find that past essay options were open to applicants this year as I loved the “why are odd numbers so odd?” prompt, and wrote an essay I quite liked on it. But when I scrolled through the massive post your essay thread here on College Confidential, I noticed someone who’d been accepted a year or so ago wrote an essay that came to very similar conclusions to mine. I didn’t plagiarize, had no idea his/her essay even existed before writing mine.
Will admissions assume I plagiarized even though I didn’t? I sincerely thought my essay was original, or as original as it could be in a pool of thousands of applicants.
@UChicago given the waitlist is unranked, how does uchicago choose which students to admit off the waitlist?
@UChicago I uploaded my supplemental essays, all in one file, under the “Upload Materials” part of my personal UChicago profile. It was only later that I found out that there is a specified part for each of the supplemental essays under “Forms”. I then immediately uploaded them there as well. Will a case of duplication like this be excused? Thank you!
Hi @Dramaticv It’s not a problem at all! Don’t worry about it!
@College5225 Students are deferred if they have strong applications, but are also students we want to consider with the entire applicant pool. There are students that are denied. There is no institutional preference toward either pool. If you have a competitive application, there is no higher chance you’ll be accepted regular over early or vice versa.
@genius231 Deferred students will be read as Regular Decision applicants, and will be notified of their decision at the same time as the decision is released for the rest of the Regular Decision pool.
@trickster2212 That fee is waived automatically!
@oxygenmagnesium Congratulations on your admission! There are additional awards. Reach out to your regional admissions counselor for more information about your financial aid award and merit scholarships.
@ComputerAge Congratulations on your admission! Please reach out to the financial aid office directly to discuss your specific financial aid award.
@welcometomylife There is nothing you necessarily did “wrong” on your application; in many cases, we simply need to see more information about the applicant pool.
Because we read the applications holistically, and because all decisions are made by a committee, there is no way we can comment on anyone’s application after the decision is finalized. If you would like us to know more about you when we re-read your file during the Regular Decision cycle, you may email your regional admissions counselor with any information that you did not include in your original application.
Your regional admissions counselor will take note of your continued interest in UChicago, and will add any additional information to your file for reference during the regular decision cycle. Please know that your application will be given a full and complete read just as it was in the Early Action cycle. For more information on our admissions decisions, please visit our website.
@demostheneslocke Feel free to email your regional admissions counselor with any updates to your file. They will be added to your application when it is read again during the Regular Decision cycle.
@mediapr We do not track demonstrated interest. If you would like to, feel free to email your regional admissions counselor to let them know that you attended the tour, but that will not impact your application. Other than that, feel free to talk about it in your essay!
@karakoram We will post a received materials checklist to each student’s UChicago account sometime in mid-January. Feel free to have your school submit their materials this week; your application will be read without penalty!
@genius231 Feel free to upload that midyear report directly to your UChicago account under “additional materials,” or email it to your regional admissions counselor.
@Kollege2020 All applications are viewed through an online virtual system.
@Kasami Many students will reach similar conclusions on these prompts. As long as the construction of your essay is unique, and the thoughts are your own, we will not flag your essay as suspicious.
@aych1686 Once we have determined whether or not we will admit students from the waitlist, the committee uses holistic review again to decide who to admit.
