@UChicago Hi. The deadline for the transfer application has already passed. Can I still submit my application? I had a lot of mid-term exams last few weeks, and I didn’t have time to write my essays. That’s why I missed the deadline.
What do you look for the transfer students? What is the transfer acceptance rate for last year?
I originally sent a letter of interest and video that was around 500 words and video around 4 minutes long, and sent another 250 word update email about significant awards I won between the time I sent the original letter and today. In addition to my somewhat long essays, will this significantly hurt me?
@happy6523 Please reach out to our Director of Transfer Admissions, Zach Evans, at zevans81@uchicago.edu regarding your application. We have a holistic review process for transfer applications, where academics, outside involvement, essays, test scores, and letters of recommendation are all viewed as important. The transfer application process is very competitive and acceptance rates in the past have been below those in the first-year application process, around 4-5 percent.
@Nibbles360, Your updates will not at all negatively impact your application.
@PingThePanda, The Regular Decision release date has not yet been finalized, but we will post it on our website and social media platforms once it has.
When are admissions decision finalized at UChicago and most colleges? I ask because I sent in an application update just yesterday, and I want to know if it will help at all or if my decision has already been made. Is it safe to assume that final decisions ordinarily haven’t been made by this point (approximately 20 days out). Thanks!
@UChicago Hi! There have been reports on the Class of 2021 Applicant Thread about international applicants receiving emails to consider withdrawing their financial aid requests. Have these emails been sent to all international applicants or specifically to those who are on the verge of being accepted? Is there anything that can be inferred from these reports i.e is the above assumption correct? Thanks!
@guy1234 Please feel free to submit any updates. We will consider them up until the day decisions are released.
@SupaSailor I’m sorry about the confusion! We sent an e-mail to all international regular decision applicants who did not apply for need-based aid, letting them know they must apply for aid before admissions decisions are released. All international RD applicants who did not apply for need-based aid received this e-mail.
Last question, do you guys make an effort to flush out the kids that spend a fortune to professionally advance their application? With so many people spending thousands of dollars to hire people to help with essays, resume writing, and all the like, I sometimes feel like ordinary middle class kids are at a serious disadvantage. Do you guys try to account for these (in my opinion) unfair advantages? @UChicago
@UChicago I’m planning on submitting an update to my application. Should I upload it to the applicant portal, or should I email it to the regional admissions officer? Thanks!
@UChicago My guidance counselor messed up and only sent my mid year reports this past Friday (mid year reports came out last month for my school). How will this affect my admission decision? Will my application still get read?
@UChicago What warrants a rescinded admission? I’m worried because I’ve read that it’s based on “maintaining loosely the grades you got in with,” and I got in with basically a perfect GPA, only an A minus or two. Now here’s the problem: seniors at my school get out in April to study independently for IB Exams, leading to an extremely short 2nd semester, and I bombed a few tests one week due to personal difficulties, so I might finish with one or two B’s. Would I be at risk of getting having my admission rescinded since my high GPA was probably a big factor in my admission, or is a 3.8 senior year not that bad and I’m just being paranoid? My cumulative should still be a 3.95, though.
@guy1234 You do not need to spend any money in order to craft a successful application. In fact, successful applicants drive their own applications, are authentic, and use their own voice when writing essays.
@temples Please e-mail your admissions counselor with the update.
@DueTomorrow, Your application will not at all be negatively impacted. It will still be considered for admission.
@silverguy Your admission will not be rescinded for receiving a couple Bs.
Thanks for being open to questions! I was wondering: UChicago’s website recommends 3 years of lab sciences. Does it include AP Environmental Science as a lab science? I know some colleges do, and some do not.
Hi @andyinhishead, We do not have a high school biology requirement, so you do not need to worry about that. By the way, Grace is still in the office, but I (Alex) am answering questions now!
@UChicago Is it possible to try to request a specific house (e.g. Phoenix House) in the housing application if we find ourselves enjoying the house culture there more than at others? Thanks!
You cannot request a specific house in the housing application. Only a dorm. Within a dorm, you are assigned to a house at random. But there are vacancies that open up in rooms within certain houses during the year, because of various reasons. If that happens, they will solicit requests from students to move into those rooms. At that time you can reply to those announcements and you may get assigned to that room, which would in effect then put you in that house. If there is a student in that room already he/she can also pull somebody as his/her roommate into that room. They are given that option before the announcement goes to the general student population.
