UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

That means the school does not treat its waitlist like a standby queue on an airline flight, where you can see what your chances are of getting on the flight by looking at where you place on the list. The school picks students to admit of the waitlist based on its own set of priorities. They don’t reveal publicly which waitlisted students they prefer. They most probably have their favorites. They just don’t tell you

@UChicago

Alex,
My son is currently a junior (graduating 2018). We attended a regional information in our area (Massachusetts) through Exploring Educational Excellence. My son was extremely impressed with UChicago and it is currently his top choice. We just booked a trip to fly out and do a tour during our spring break. We are currently signed up to do a tour and information session on 4/18/17. Is there anything else you recommend we do on this visit to learn more about the school or convey our interest? As it requires a significant expense to visit, we want to maximize our visit. Thanks so much for any advice or guidance you can provide.

@UChicago as an international student am I only competing with people from my own country, or am I competing with all international students? Is there an approximate quota per country?

@UChicago I was just waitlisted for Chicago, I was wondering if the waitlist usually happens due to any deficiency in my application, or whether there were too many people that applied? Also, is there anything I could do to increase my chances of acceptance on the waitlist? Thank you.

Does anyone know if there is an accepted UChicago forum for parents?

@IntlStude, You can only list your three residence hall preferences. However, our Housing office will place you in a residence hall and House based on the housing application you submit.

@KalaniAnne, An unranked waitlist means that when space becomes available for the class, all students that have accepted their spots on the waitlist are considered. There is not a specific order in which waitlist candidates are considered.

@begosgas, When you arrive on campus, our tour guides can point out several areas of the university you may be interested in seeing. You can also learn about some of our favorite spots at http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/visiting/planning/what-else-to-do/hyde-park. Please keep in mind that we do not track demonstrated interest.

@danielb0370, Applicants do not compete against one another. We view all applicants as individuals and do not have any quotas per country.

@Pase66, Students that are placed on the waitlist are strong candidates, but there was not enough space in the class to admit every strong applicant. Therefore, you should not submit new essays or application materials. Rather, we ask that if you are still interested in attending UChicago, submit the waitlist reply form through your UChicago Account and send a short note to your regional admissions counselor reiterating your interest.

@UChicago
Could you please guide me through the steps required in completing the language requirements and demonstrating language competence for international students?

For international students, the official website says this:

“Students who are foreign nationals may meet the language competence requirement if their formal schooling experience in a country other than the United States enables them to demonstrate the criteria of cultural understanding and language competence described above. They must submit a petition to Catherine Baumann (C 214, 773.702.8008, ccbauman@uchicago.edu). Supporting documentation must also be provided; the requirement is not automatically waived.”

But what exactly does the “criteria of cultural understanding and language competence described above” entail? Is it just “demonstrating linguistic proficiency equivalent to one year of college-level study?” And what are the documents that one must provide for a petition?
Thanks!

@UChicago
Hi! I was an admitted student and I have some questions regarding the April Overnights. What does the schedule look like? I’ve seen the tentative schedule online, but I’m not really sure how it works. Are sessions constantly going on? Will we have free time to explore campus and meet up with other admitted students?
Thanks!

We would like to know as well as my S will be there next week. Thank you!

@ScrnNme, The Language Petition can be found at https://college.uchicago.edu/sites/college.uchicago.edu/files/attachments/language_petition.pdf. You would need to submit a transcript or any documentation that would confirm you studied in another country.

@sparkki, Congratulations on your admission! The schedule is now available on the admitted student site, and you will also receive it over e-mail on Sunday. Sessions are running throughout the day, but until 3 p.m. on Thursday, nothing is mandatory. So, you should feel free to explore campus!

@UChicago .
Hi! I have three Bs right now and three As for my second semester grades. If one of my Bs slips into a C, would I have to worry about being rescinded? I’ve been stressed out about this.

@UChicago
Hi,I am a waiting listed student and I don’t know who is my regional admission counselor,so I just uploaded my note in Account,which reiterated my continuous interest. Would it help?Or must I send it directly to my regional admission counselor?Where could I find his/her email address?

I was just wondering if it is very selective of who they allow to take the gap year or will they allow anyone that is really interested in UChicago to take that gap year? Just wondering if anyone has ever gotten denied from taking the gap year?

Hi @UChicago ! I recently got waitlisted and in my reply to remain on the waitlist I answered “yes” to the question, “Would you like to be considered for a place in the Class of 2022 (to begin classes in the fall of 2018) after taking a gap year?” I know that we’re supposed to write a brief email to our regional admissions counselor, but if we answered yes to being considered for the gap year, can we write an email explaining what we would do with that gap year?

Condensed question: Can we write an email to our regional admissions counselor explaining what we would do with a gap year?

Hi again @UChicago (back with another question haha) In regards to the gap year, are students guaranteed a spot for the class of 2022 if accepted during the consideration process? Or is our application merely placed aside for next year’s admissions process, meaning we won’t find out if we get accepted (for the class of 2022) until next year in that pool of applicants.

@UChicago When will the admissions office start announcing to students if they are accepted off the waiting list?
Thank you. :slight_smile:

@UChicago Greetings. Why are you not announcing admissions stats in April, as you always do? The delay is causing rampant speculation. Not good. At least, explain why the delay. Cheers.

@AshleyMisAwesome, We expect admitted students to maintain high grades. That said, one C will typically not impact your admissions decision. Unless there is a significant drop in grades, we will not revoke an offer of admission.

@Momo0422, Please send the note to your regional counselor as well. You can find contact information for your admissions counselor at http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/contact.

@kevinthekoala, Reasonable requests are typically approved, and there is a committee that looks over requests. Overall, we just want to make sure that a gap year is productive.

@karamuu, Feel free to send an e-mail to your admissions counselor reaffirming your interest and gap year plans. In regards to your other question, students admitted will be guaranteed a spot in the Class of 2022; those students will be notified after May 1st.

@ChocoBananos123, Students are admitted from the waitlist starting in April, but most students will be notified after May 1st, when we know how many admitted students will be attending.

@Chrchill Oh my, you got stone walled! =;
