Chill out. There are people in the world who are far poorer than you have ever been, and who have never EVER had nice things. There are people in the world who don’t have Dr. Mom to pay their full tuition to CSU wherever. If the government wants to give them a measly $5k a year so that they can finally have a few nice (and again, nice is relative - someone who’s never had anything new might consider a shopping trip of ~$100 at Ross Dress for Less very, very nice) things and maybe a laptop and internet access, I think that’s fine.

Call me a socialist if you want, but that’s okay. I’m willing to pay higher taxes so that people living below the poverty line can get a few thousand a year while going to school full time.

@asphyxiac thank you.

One last comment for Lemaitre1-

It is wise for our government to invest in it’s up and coming youth at the community college. Consider this- It is MUCH cheaper for a government to fund financial aid at the community college level for two years (As you have mentioned, cheaper tuition, fees, etc) than it would be to fund that same student for four years at a university/cal state. The idea is that by providing disadvantaged students with a financial stimulus, they can create a population that will become the backbone of the US, and eventually do the same for future students. Most of the people I know (including those at the community college level) would not have the means to attend college if it were not for financial aid. Although it may not be benefiting YOU directly, it is contributing to a healthier environment overall- so forget about being so egocentric.

Your thought process would be the same as if I were to say: Forget giving CSU’s any financial aid, they don’t pay NEARLY the amount as a UC student! So why bother giving it to them? Let’s give it all to the UC students! Now that wouldn’t make munch sense, would it?

^ actually the whole reason why the cost of education is so high is BECAUSE the government is giving students financial aid. But that’s a whole other can of worms.

^ That’s debatable, but I concur on the fact that is a different argument…haha.

^ First, I am Dr. Dad, not Dr. Mom and since suffering a stroke five years ago I have not been able to work full time so I do not earn as much as the typical doctor. Second, UC students can get their educations’ paid for by the Blue and Gold Program that is only open to UC students. There is no financial aid program for CSU students despite the enormous increases in CSU tuition in recent years. This brings the cost of attendence at a CSU to about $20,000 which is far more than UC students who have their tuition and many of their other expenses covered under the Blue and Gold Program have to pay for a year of attendence at a UC.

Even at $46/semester unit CCC students are paying annual tuition that is only about 10% of what CSU students pay and with Blue and Gold UC students pay nothing at all. The only alternatives for funding an education at a CSU is to deplete your savings or in the case of low income students, take on large amounts of debt.

^ are you kidding me?

The cost of attendance at a UC is around 30k including housing. So i don’t think CSU’s should be whining about 20k because UC’s will always be more expensive. Im sure Csu’s have scholarships too.

@lemaitre1 Not trying to put you on the offense or anything, but there is grant aid for people who go to CSUs. I was accepted to SDSU and they are offering me a good amount of money in something called the State University Grant, so between that, federal grants, and about 10k a year in federal student loans I’m just about covered (including housing). I’m not worried about potentially graduating with about 20k in student loans, and I don’t think that’s an unmanageable amount of debt, it is only about 2k more than I would have than if I went to a UC and used the Blue and Gold plan.

Also, while $36 a unit is cheap in comparison to 4 year universities, I still would not have been able to afford it if I hadn’t been offered financial aid like the Board of Governors Fee Waiver, and by cutting aid at the community college level you would be making it very difficult for a lot of people to get a second chance at school, or even a first chance.

@lemaitre1

Sorry about the gender confusion. I am female, and have a tendency to assume that everyone else is as well unless they specify otherwise.

With respect to the cost of a CSU vs the cost of a UC, both schools offer financial aid in the form of state and federal grants. The UC seems to be trying to make itself more affordable to students from middle-class families by offering the Blue and Gold plan, while CSUs seem to cater more towards lower income working adults (they allow part-time attendance, and whatnot). My cousin attended a CSU because she could not afford to go to a UC. She received something like 5k in federal aid, 5k in Cal Grant aid, a state university grant, and a merit based scholarship. Her tuition and housing was fully covered, and I don’t think it would have been had she attended a UC (without loans, at least).

Also, I’m sorry if it seemed like I was attacking you earlier. You’ve posted a lot of helpful information in the past, and I respect you as a contributor to this forum - I just think that we happen to disagree on this issue. It’s likely in part due to my own personal bias. I was accepted to several UCs straight out of high school, and couldn’t afford to attend because I received zero financial support from my parents. In fact, the money that I made modeling in high school went towards their mortgage payments. I ended up having to work full time just to save up enough money to go to school.

If it weren’t for financial aid at the CC level, I’d never have been able to bear the cost of tuition in addition to living expenses.

why are you guys arguing about something so marginal. anyways, if you guys dont get it in i think all bets are off because it looks like there will be no waitlist and absolutely no appeals. i am just glad it worked out for some of us :)) goodluck to you guys though ;)

My son got accepted today via email

Hello Mindy what are your son’s stats? Tag?

@uchappytrain

Are you supposed to spend that money on “lots” of clothes?

@Bricies I was wondering why my school sent out the other half of my pell grant so early, it was supposed to be sent out on the 30th. Another thing that was weird was that I checked my bank statement today and my refund was deposited in two increments of 350 dollars. I was mad bc they only gave me 700 dollars when I’m supposed to get 1350. So, I just checked my financial aid package through my community college to see whats up:
