I agree on so many of your points @RBurgundy . I wanted to add last year and this have felt like as an outsider looking in a lot of these decisions are a bit of rolling-the-dice. I have watched one super-high stats kid, who has EVERYTHING going for him… GPA, test scores (36ACT almost perfect SAT), extracurriculars, hard-to-get-into summer-programs (TASP & COSMOS), community service, awards, varsity football, uncommon ethnicity (Tahitian-American) get flat down rejected to his ED school, yet another kid from another state with much less of an impressive academic background, no sports, and a 27 ACT got in ED to the same school. I wish both students mentioned the best, and do not know either. They both truly sounded like nice people too, but obviously one kid really touched their application readers, while the other did not. The holistic approach hopefully means all of our kids find “their right fit”, but I will 100% admit some admission decisions to me make no clear sense to me as an outsider looking in.
And to all of you future Anteaters, A BIG Congrats!!! To everyone else, best wishes on finding the school best meant for you, where you can grow and thrive the best at!

When UCI admissions respond to phone calls, they are trained to be as vague as possible. Their “it’s possible” is them being vague. Don’t take their word with much stock.

I agree with your statements about “after 2 years out of school nobody cares about which school you come from”. As a refugee I did not have a choice of which city I resettled, so I ended up in Albuquerque and UNM and then went to UT Austin for my MS and UC Boulder for my MBA. They were all great schools and suited me just fine. All thru my 35 years as an engineer, your assertion is so true: we hired many Ivy engineers who were arrogant but inferior to engineers from lesser known schools but were driven. We made the mistake of sending our son to Mission San Jose high in Bay Area where 60% has GPA above 4.2 and 75% has GPA above 4, so our son, a National Merit Finalist, ends up without any acceptance from his UC choices except for a waitlist spot at UCSD and SLO in Bio Sciences. He probably will go to Illinois Urbana-Champaign or do a 5-year PharmD at UOP but Thise are not his dream choices and I am sad that the state of CA did not have a spot for my son. Good luck to all and remember that you will be ok anywhere if you have a goal and work hard on it

@OnPinsAndNeedles wow! What an experience! I can totally relate to that being in Bay Area too. S didn’t get into any of his dream UCs but only solace is he got into cal poly slo… Other than that the state of CA has totally failed us… After all that drama about UC-for-you and ELC etc.

@Kittane — congrats on your son @SLO. Great school. I still hope my son gets off the waitlist there. It’s funny these days our friends laughed at us about sending our son to a competitive high school while they let their kids go to chartered schools and ended up at UCI and UCSD easily. Our daughter is in 9th grade and maintains her grade so far but at any sight she falls lower we will sell our house and move
