UCLA Bar - for those questions that take less than 5 posts to answer...

i have a lot of friends commuting from that area. it’s doable, and a lot less cheaper, but you have to make an effort to find friends/form study groups/etc. shouldn’t be too much of a problem. also, it limits your scheduling, because it’s obviously less convenient to have 8am classes or 5pm classes since you have to drive home… so take that into consideration as well. especially as a CSE major, you will have a lot of pre-req classes to do at various times…

Thanks for your input. Can you make any suggestions on making that effort to meet people? Also, will this be a handicap to my GPA? By that I mean will I be getting lower grades than those who live on campus.

make an effort to talk to people in your classes, ask them to study together, have lunch sometime, you know… the more people the better. it shouldn’t be a handicap to your GPA as long as you stay on top of things. my friends who commute are also commuting next year, so it’s clearly not a problem to them… try it out for a year and see how it goes. living on campus is obviously a lot more convenient, but i think that people here waste so much time anyway, haha…

Instead of dealing with libraries and time limits, just buy the previous edition of the book (about $15) after asking the professor if the new edition is significantly different–most professors designed their class using a previous edition of the txtbk.

I have one friend who’s a CS major and commutes. It’s harder for her to meet people since she’s not living in the dorms, but she’s involved in a couple of student groups at school so she stays on campus for the meetings and then goes home afterward.

Your GPA shouldn’t be influenced and may be higher than others because you won’t be as distracted as those living in the dorms. (assumption)

Is there a way to waitlist in a discussion class while i am already enrolled in a different sectiondiscussion class. I am in an 8am discussion but i want to try and get into an 11 AM discussion, however there is one person on the waitlist. is there anyway to waitlist for this while still keeping my 8:00am in case i don’t get into the class

How does summer housing work for the Research Experience for Undergraduates? I’m currently enrolled in summer classes and will be dropping them if I get in to that program, but either way I need housing. How does that work?

@laserbase

As far as I know, that’s not possible. You should talk to your teacher/TAs and see if they will let you switch sections. Usually, they are willing to as long as you can find someone from another section to trade with.

Does anyone know about taking courses online? How exactly does it work? Would you recommend it? Because I am considering taking Desma9 over the summer…

thanks

how hard would this schedule be for a first quarter freshman?

Chem 20A (maybe honors)
Physics 6A
Math 32A
Econ 11

Thanks!

^you should take it light and then gradually add on your schedule

Should probably drop that physics.

Should probably change that physics to a 1A and add an 89HC

Why would I need an Honors contract class? Or was this sarcasm?

With that heavy a course-load, thought maybe you were a massochist. So a little bit of sarcasm, yes.

haha ok thanks

Though honestly, I don’t see why you would take 6A instead of 1A if you’re taking Math 32A and Chem 20A.

biochemistry

why are there two math series, Math 3a and 3b and Math 31a and 31b, and how hard is the placement test to get into these, thanks

3 is for people not majoring in physical sciences. From what I’ve seen there isn’t a placement test for the 30’s
