UCLA Bar - for those questions that take less than 5 posts to answer...

psychobio is a definite south campus.

yeah, psychobio is south.

psychology… it really is stuck in the middle. i often say i have no home. the pre-reqs are pretty split: stats, life science, physics, chem versus anthro, philosophy… and the upperdivs vary as well. it’s rather hard to classify.

what does CAR stand for

Change of (housing) Assignment Request

or something along those lines.

I hear a lot of people suggesting bringing a printer. Don’t other dormmates and fellow students leech off of you for prints? If not, how do you keep them away?

Either have them pitch in or just say no.

is there a link to information about continuing UCLA students taking summer courses at community colleges?

^And can I like take summer courses at a community college in Austin or does it have to be in California?

Yes.

assist.org

Which department has the best professors?

Are econ/management professors as bad as said in bruinwalk? I rather switch my major than take meaningless classes.

Also is it allowed to bring laptops/tape recorders to class? I think I will have easier time writing my notes on laptops and audio recording lectures.

What are the most marketable degrees other than engineering?

Also is it advantageous to sign up for the first orientation session? Like in the sense that you can sign up for classes earlier than other freshmen.

Yes, the earlier your orientation session is the earlier you sign up for classes.

Yes but they close sign ups and reserve seats for the rest of the orientations aswell. So it doesn’t matter if you get the first orientation or not.

Question about summer sessions…Session C is only 6 weeks long, I believe A & B are longer (not sure of that). Is it doable to take two 4-5 unit classes in session C? Say Soc. 1 and Pysch 10? The goal is to try for an A of course. Would it be better to just do one to ensure the A or do many take 2 classes?

i disagree with joiya. i had a later orientation, and by the time i got there, many of the classes, even those just for freshmen, were already closed. the earlier the orientation, the better.

and also once they open those closed classes again, ANYONE from the previous orientations can sign up for those classes too, so while you wait for your turn in line to sign up on your orientation counselor’s computer, everyone else will fill up those spots at the comfort of their home w/o any waiting

Hmm…I just posted that after asking quite a few people about that. Guess I’m wrong.

I would strongly suggest going to one of the first 3-4 orientation sessions and bringing your own laptop. My daughter had her laptop and the day of registration she could monitor her chosen classes and when her registration time came she didn’t have to wait to use another computer. She kept the laptop locked in her room most of the time but it really came in handy day 3 when it was time to register.

Unfortunately international students like me only get sent the visa form AFTER July 15th which sucks since all the other colleges have already mailed the I-20 Forms…
