hi,
as in international student, im deciding which university to attend for an exchange - between UCLA and Berkeley architecture. in final year for undergrad.
could anyone from either or who knows about them give me more info? e.g. which would you choose between the two? which is more focused on architecture in the undergraduate course. what the studio/workshop offers etc.
any info would be appreciated (especially about UCLA since the website does not say much)

actually both of those schools are much more focused on their graduate programs than their undergradate programs. UCLA’s is brand-new, this is only the first or second year of it.

On the other hand, I (even as a Trojan, and therefor a UCLA hater) would probably choose UCLA anyways. Being in Los Angeles is an invaluable opportunity to see in person much of the architecture that people around the country only get slides of.

i heard ucberkeley’s architecture program sucks butt and the kids are pretty miserable for the most part…i’d choose ucla - but its harder for international and out of state kids to get in.

i’d much prefer usc if you’re considering that :]

It really depends on what you’re looking for. UCLA just got Abe and also has Denari, whereas Berk has…hm…can’t think of anyone famous. Also, LA has better CNC machines. Having visited LA’s architecture dpt, I got the feeling that they put a lot more emphasis on digital work. Likewise, I feel that Berkeley will give you a broader, more comprehensive understanding of architecture.

i just have to ask, why does your screen name say ‘such rubbish’ in german?
lol

i speak german, so yeah. haha sorry that’s random.

ach, weiss ich immer nicht. Ich konnte mich immer nicht einen “kreativen” Titel ausdenken. Deshalb war der Titel nur Quatsch!

nun, ich verstehe. nicht, warum sie ein Wort, das hei

hahah rubbish to such nice sounding names! yep, fluent in german, what about you?e

definitely not
my school has an arch program in germany.
hopefully i will be fluent by then.

anyway back to the topic, i think i would recommend ucla’s program over berkeley. berkeley’s name in the field of architecture is slightly tarnished.

tarnished? how so? I’d agree that Berkeley isn’t as highly championed as LA, but care to explain your reasoning jack?

well, after job shadowing a few pretty well established arch firms in my area (near sacramento), they told me that they will employ cpslo grads over berkeley. the program is more lax at ucb, and less rigorous than cal poly or other barch programs such as usc, or sci-arch. the architectural studies major is not as attractive to the firms that i have visited.

that’s just what i have gathered. after the job shadow, i asked the owner of the firm some questions. i told him that i wanted to go to ucb, but he recommended that i look into cal poly (he was a cal poly grad himself). he makes six digits. easy. pretty good for a small little town like chico.

i personally know people who hate it there - the grad school as well… a lot transfer to sci-arc if you guys know it.

p.s. i wish i knew german, ay :

yeah, i am going to apply i think later to sci-arc.

ich liebe lernen deutsch! :)

Hey jack, I just realized that you were talking about the undergrad program at Berkeley. Of course, if you compare a BA to a Barch, firms would prefer students from USC or sci arc. However, if referring to Marchs, most firms would gladly take berk alums over sci-arc (unless the firm is morphosis haha). I’d disagree with angie that many people in Berk’s grad program transfer to sci-arc, esp considering that they have such different approaches. Most people going into Berk understand that they won’t focus as much on paperless architecture. (If you were to say that a lot of people transfer from princeton to yale, that’d be more believable)

you are right - sci-arc is very different stuff from ucberkeley - but i know specifically 3 people who left ucberk’s grad school to go to sci-arc’s so thats how i interpreted it haha. im not looking at either’s grad school anyways. columbia looks pretty good to me haha.

I am an undergrad student in UCLA’s architecture program.

i can answer any questions

yes, we have Hitoshi Abe
neil denari
greg lynn
sylvia lavin
olveia something something (who worked under for jean nouvel)

a lot of guest lecturers. Toyo Ito lectured here, many other prestigious japanese guest architects came. here are the differences

UC BEREKLEY : SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
UC LA: SCHOOL OF ARTS AND ARCHITECTURE

within their respective departments, you’ll know which program has more emphasis in. UCLA put their architecture department with their arts department and thus it emphasizes art more(IMO).

too bad i didnt apply, but just wondering - are there a lot of out of state students? and what about NY students?

in UCLA?

10chars

well better question would be % of class?

rubbish (i will call you that because it’s fun ;] ), yeah that’s what i was referring to, i sort of forgot about the march aspect.

you are totally right though!
