***UCLA CLASS OF 2019 APPLICANT DISCUSSION THREAD***

@StevenToCollege, I am a parent too, and I understand that you are proud of your son. But you have already posted, quite a bit, about his accomplishments. I’m sure many of the kids and parents on this board could do the same…but we don’t. I agree with others that your post above served no purpose other than to brag. You had already made it clear that your son had Regents, Alumni Scholarship and Engineering Open House emails. The poster was inquiring about other kinds of emails (as those of the type your son had received had already been thoroughly discussed on this board).

I’m sure you are a great dad and I’m sure your son is amazing and I hope you get many, many opportunities to brag about him, as well you should. He deserves it! But in this context, your post came across as gloating, and it’s really inappropriate at this time.

@clishmaclaver‌ would you mind posting your other stats/characteristics?

Would decisions come at 8 PM for East Coast kids?

@JHuff11 Fellow east coast kid; that’s what I’m assuming. I have to do a musical during that time so I’m debating whether or not I want to check my decision during the intermission… The struggle is so real for thsoe of us not living in Cali, haha.

Do you have to be invited to apply for the regents scholarship or can anyone apply like the alumni one?

@dontdodrugs‌ Yeah, you need to be invited. They sent out invitations through email around the end of January/beginning of Feb. Around the top 1-2% were invited.

@2015ucfan UW GPA: 4.0, W GPA: I have no idea but high because I took 3 AP’s in my Junior year and 4 AP’s this year. I did not take any SAT Subject Tests.
I’m out-of-state on the east coast, and for my extracurricular activities I had quality over quantity. I had a few significant arts-based activities which contrasted with my vigorous academic life (which is why they put me in Sixth college at UCSD instead of Revelle I bet :(…)
I do have a challenging background story, although to be honest I did not emphasize it too much just because they specified they do not want sob stories so my personal statements focused more on how I overcame challenges and how I wouldn’t be where I am without my past.
I am European and I have lived in 3 countries. I am also fluent in 3 languages, and a first generation college student.
I was very insecure and didn’t think I was going to be accepted anywhere because I was told your SAT and GPA matter the most but I feel like the UC reviewing system is made perfectly so that everyone gets a chance to be accepted.
Hopefully UCLA will see something in my application too…

@clishmaclaver‌ It sounds like you have a great shot! In fact, I think we all have a great shot – it’s just a matter of the competition this year with 112,000 other applicants…

For me, I’m concerned that being homeschooled will hurt my chances of being accepted, although I have been accepted to UCSC, and I know they’re looking for people of all different backgrounds and cultures. I meet all of the UC requirements and beyond, have a great GPA, great essays, really impressive letters of recommendation (I had to have them for the film program), and a great Critical Reading and good Writing score on the SAT…but the math, no. Baaaaddd. That’s the only other thing that could hurt me. I’m so stressed, especially since only 30 people of 3500 get into their undergrad film program!

3 more days people! Get yourselves ready, it’s been a long wait.

@FilmMaker1 yeah I heard their Film program is the most competitive. I feel lucky to have chosen Neuroscience as my major.
I don’t see how homeschooling could jeopardize your chances. Some of the most amazing and brightest people I have met were home-schooled and it’s exactly like you said, diversity is very important.
Just stay positive!

@CADREAMIN You say that getting an engineering open house invitation definitely means you are going to get in? If you don’t mind me asking, how do you know that for sure?

does anyone have the breakdown of how many students are let in by major at UCLA? I’ve seen them for other schools on other forums but I haven’t seen one for UCLA

I’m hoping for a miracle on Friday lol. Could you guys chance me? I know UCLA is more holistic than the other UC’s, so hopefully that makes up for my low SAT score.

So far I’ve been accepted to UCM, UCSC, UCR, UCI, UCD, UCSB, and Cal Poly Pomona. And I’ve been waitlisted at UCSD. Do I have chance at UCLA??

-Thanks in advance.

GUYS GOOD LUCK FOR THE UPCOMING DAYS!!! To all the nervous students, including myself, hopefully we get in ! [-O<

@prospect1 agree with your post, my D made it clear she would be horrified if I posted any award or invite she received on even an anonymous forum!

@daronu - I actually answered this a few times, but honestly and sincerely, it doesn’t matter if I told you the President or Wizard of UCLA told me him/herself, you wouldn’t believe it 100% till you see your portal with the news on Friday. And that will still be an amazing moment, nothing like seeing those gold and blue letters light up your screen. But based on the past 5 years or so, it has been that way. But who knows, this could be the year they change things up, they are in charge! Regardless - I wish you well and luck!

My daughter got an invitation email for the Engineering Open House in April. Does it mean something?

@UCLA1997‌ just wanted to say that I get emails all the time from them talking about financial aid, campus life, literally everything

@FrustratedDad‌ it’s basically a likely letter. congrats to your daughter!

i’m so nervous for ucla…
i got into SDSU, UCSD, UCSB, UCI, and Williams College but I feel like those don’t compare to the competitiveness of UCLA (except for williams, probably), so I can’t figure out my chances… :frowning: wish everyone the best!!!

@clishmaclaver‌ Thank you for the encouraging words! We’ll all know soon.
