Pretty excited… if I don’t get into Cal then I’m going here. And I believe that they really do read the personal statements because someone with nearly identical stats (who goes to the same school as me) and possibly more volunteer hours was rejected. Honestly I feel that my personal statement was the deal breaker.
Very surprisingly got into UCLA oos and Northwestern in the same day!!! I have a poor class rank (50th) and no hooks or sports but fine grades (3.9ish) and strong ECs. Hoping Berkeley pulls through
Literally, if you’re focused on test scores and not being able to get in to UC’s because of them, don’t be. I got into UCLA’s class of 2020 for Biology with a 1790 SAT score which is way below average for UCLA. A lot of people didn’t think that I would get in, but I did. I didn’t have any unique experiences that would separate me from other candidates, but I showed passion for my major and what I wanted to do. I demonstrated my love for science by taking three years of biology, two years of chem, and got an internship at kaiser. I also showcased my passion for helping others through my community service. Both of these aspects of my application contributed to what I wanted to be when I get older, a pediatrician. I showcased that two very important pieces of my life, will contribute to my future career choice. People aren’t joking when they say test scores don’t matter as much as you think (but they still matter). SHOW PASSION. That’s just my two cents.
@jtylur I can tell that comment was geared toward me so answer me this; I had exceptional grades and test scores, an innumerable amount of EC’s, but I also wrote two very strong personal statements in which I definitely showed my passion for the study of economics and business. I had my college and career counselor review them and she said that they were some of the strongest she’s seen. She has worked as an admissions officer for UCLA and Stanford so I think she knows what she’s talking about.
@jtylur I was wait listed and there were two people at my school that got in and took zero AP classes. How is that in any way fair? I challenged myself, took a total of 10 AP courses over the span ofand succeeded when I had my entire family telling me I wouldn’t succeed. I easily could’ve breezed through high school without challenging myself to my full potential like the two kids at my school that got in.
@nshepherd929@jtylur Something which people often ignore is the fact that your apps are reviewed by different atcoms (UCLA puts 100 of them into the task). No matter how they try to unify the assessments with guidelines, still adcoms’ personal attitude can be prevalent in a holistic environment. And no two adcoms can come up with similar selection!
(Even though they try to have 2 and somethings 3 adcoms review a single appl). In another word: it is really a crapshoot!

Honestly it wasn’t directed towards any one person. I was just saying to future applicants not to be discouraged to apply because of mediocre test scores. This forum helped me a lot because I was a full IB diploma candidate with a subpar SAT score. I had a college counselor review my essays, I did full IB, and my family was skeptical about me getting into any school. I’m not a college admissions counselor so I wouldn’t know why you got waitlisted. Just know that I wasn’t directing it towards anyone.
