If it’s just a general number, I don’t know how it’s related to the topic. Knowing that UCLA has many more NON-STEM majors + a much much SMALLER engineering school comparing to UCSD.
@khanam any proof to your class shortage claim? Perhaps there are other issues. There are some 5 year programs that bring down those statistics at every school. They should not impact the percentages, but they do. More students applied to UCSD that they to to UCB, so I there must be something else going on,
such as a 5-year integrated Masters Programs…

@calraterboi I’m quoting nesac stats. I analyzed many colleges die my daughter. And UCSD had alarmingly low on time rates. My nephew is a senior at UCSD so he did say that it can be hard for students who fall behind to catch up due to prerequisites not being available all through the year unlike at a UCLA. Anecdotally, UCSD offers the worst fa to instate students compared to UCLA and UCB. It’s the youngest of the major UCs.

I actually have a student right now who is being offered a full ride at UCSD but not UCLA. Anecdotal, yes, but it makes me wonder about the FA statement.

Hello! I was rejected for the class of 2020. I know it’s not certain that after attending a community college in California, you will be accepted into UCLA as a transfer. @khanam But those stats do not factor in the 5 year programs that make the 4 year graduation rate look alarming when it really is not. Find out how many are enrolled in those 5 yr programs and report back, and then I will say now you are talking! Anecdotally speaking, students say that getting pre-reqs are not difficult to get. The people I know say if you are smart and meet with advisors you can most likely graduate early. I am telling you those 5 year programs are a detriment to that kind of reporting. I am a UCLA student, so I hear where you are coming from, but I do not like when comments on here to scare people away from a school of their dreams because of false reporting or comments that do not tell the whole story. People just say whatever on these threads and so much of it is not true. The funding issue is no an issue if you have millions being donated. UCSD is not crumbling, and I feel your negative depiction is unwarranted. Again, more students applied to UCSD than they did to UCB. Any anecdotes to explain that?

@calraterboi UCSD is a decent school academically. I’ve just heard that UCLA is being able to handle the budget constraints a lot better than UCSD. I would love to see the 5 year program enrollment stats and determine “on time” graduation rates rather than “4 year” but honestly I don’t think that would explain away the 72.7 vs 56.6 differential. Univ of Florida has 5 year programs and an integrated medical program as well in fact but it reports a 67.2 4 year graduation rate. If someone can provide detailed UCSD statistics I would love to figure it out as well. I just am very suspicious after seeing a 56.6 headline number.

I hope that is a big factor? As aforementioned, UCSD/Cal engineering school is much bigger than UCLA.
@khanam , has your daughter decided which college to attend? Mine is contemplating Smith, Wellesley and UCLA (with UCLA in pole position).
@pralinegirl she got UF honors, UCLA (& a couple of other UCs), Smith, Wesleyan, Reed, Pomona and Princeton. It’s back and forth between the 2 Ps. In the absence of those 2, it would’ve been UCLA.
@khanam , We used to live not too far away from Princeton and visited its campus many times. Beautiful little town and campus! Why would she choose Pomona (excellent school BTW) over Princeton?
@pralinegirl to be honest i think she was surprised with the Princeton acceptance so I guess she wasn’t mentally prepared for it, thinking the 3 ivy applications were not going to go anywhere. Also her mom is moving to LA so being close to her mom and little brother are a plus. Finally I think she is feeling guilty about saying no to Pomona after having had just extensive contact with them.
Pomona did get ranked no 1 in the us by Forbes above all the ivies so I’m not sure there is that much of a difference between them and the ivies. Almost like choosing u Chicago over an ivy. Having said all that, the latest iteration is it will be Princeton lol.
Pomona is a terrific school, but imo it doesn’t come close to the prestige and myth of Princeton ^:)^
