having a tough time deciding between here and UNC chapel hill for premed
IMPORTANT
I was just made aware that UCLA will not count your AP units when giving out enrollment times.
This means that all freshmen, regardless of the units you’re coming in with, will have the same enrollment time (at the end after all the seniors juniors and sophomores).
At a big school like UCLA, where classes fill up fast, I think this can be a problem for getting into the classes we need to graduate on time or complete med school/dental school requirements on time. They should have told us this explicitly!
Apparently this new policy was sprung up on the current freshmen after they had already enrolled at UCLA. I don’t think that’s fair.
With all the AP exams I passed I should have sophomore standing in terms of enrollment. I was counting on this to get the classes I need on time before they fill up which they do very fast at a large public school like UCLA.
I don’t think it’s fair that now my enrollment will be pushed back with freshmen who are coming in with 0 or few AP units.

most students who are admitted to UCLA have almost a full year of AP credit so it really isn’t that “unfair”, but rather the norm. Also, keep in mind many elite private schools don’t even accept AP units toward graduation-but, rather just allow you to take a higher level course- so that’s a plus with the UCLA AP policy- your hardwork in high school actually “counts”.
@Cheery1 actually only 30% of the incoming freshmen last year had enough AP credit to have sophomore standing.
The problem is they are taking away the early enrollment for those of us with a lot of AP units. At a private school getting classes isn’t as big of a problem as it is at a large public school like UCLA. I know for a fact students who have to put off the Chem and life science series because they fill up so quickly.
@pleaseacceptme99 just a thought, I have heard there are some jobs on campus that will give you priority enrollment. If you are an in-state student, even if you need 5 years, it will most likely be cheaper than 4 years at many top private schools. My daughter is a first year econ major ( AP’s gave her sophomore status) and has not encountered any trouble getting classes thus far. Her friend who entered as a pre-med major had to switch majors his second year based on the difficulty and competition at UCLA. A smaller school for pre-med might work out better for you, and you can go to UCLA med school

I will have priority enrollment because I will be on the cheer squad but I just wanted to put that information out there because a lot of people don’t know.
I know a lot of the current freshmen were angered that they sprung this policy on them in the middle of their fall quarter.
@pleaseacceptme99 and @Cheery1 Some students do not have AP classes available to take at their high schools, so the new policy is fair to them. Also, people I know are getting the classes they need. This made it as fair as possible.
@calraterboi they can self study and still take the test.
That’s not fair to TAKE away from people to make it equal or level the playing field. What needs to be done is GIVE these schools AP teachers/classes

Did anyone else tear up when the Chancellor was speaking about all the things people from UCLA have accomplished?
@pleaseacceptme99 Why shouldn’t it be an equal playing field? Isn’t that what public education is all about? Lst, I checked, UCLA was a public school and has bragging rights because of its diversity. Having the class AP available to you with a teacher to teach it is a lot easier than self-studying and taking the test on our own, and that used to be UCLA’s answer to students who said it was not a level playing field. The reality is not all students have the resources to pay for and travel to where the tests are being administered. I heard all of this at UCLA this year. Also, some schools are dropping AP courses from their curriculum because they are compacted facts and not the best courses of study. I haven’t taken a college class like them this year yet. Look, I took the exams and would have benefitted from the old policy, but I can see that the AP’s are far from perfect. Don’t have an answer for what is. Some say IB is better Who knows. But, your answer is not perfect either because even if a student gets a waiver to take the AP, they do not pay for travel and how pro-active and savvy are you requiring everyone to be just to have the policy you want?

I didn’t say it shouldn’t be equal.
I said taking away AP units to make it equal is wrong.
Instead, school districts should work towards giving school’s AP classes/teachers as a way to make it an equal playing field (So everyone has access to AP courses).

To make AP classes available to schools that lack them is a goal that takes far more time than simply giving all freshmen equal standing. This could just be a temporary solution until the school finds something better to do. It makes sense that they would do this in the name of equality in public education, so that students from disadvantaged backgrounds do feel that they have access to college and equal standing with their peers when they get there. But who knows?
Regardless, Bruin Day/Admit Weekend was awesome and the school is looking great!
I’m on the waitlist this year, about 12 kids from my school have gotten accepted- regular decision ! I have a 4.0 and sat score of 1690 
I’m still positive wish me luck it’s an honor to be here!

In my additional information, I updated my semester grades (4.33 [4AP]) and talked about my current gpa (4.5 at least- when I submitted it ) I also added notes that hint that UCLA is my first choice and I WILL attend if accepted no doubt.
I also wrote a rubric for myself and basically included what I can contribute to UCLA and what the school can offer me. I made a note to include specific programs (like PREP) and volunteer opportunities only ucla can offer me, to show I’ve done research on the school.
I wrote a bit about my carreer goals and how I’ve been promoted and am still handling responsibilities in my extra curricular Activities with my AP classes since applying.

One of them is ranked third in our class has a 4.8 gpa I don’t even know why she got waitlisted.
