Nice! I also think taking a more rigorous schedule is the way to go. My kid also took several dual enrollment classes (city college) and I really think that was the key. Her regular HS GPA stats are not super impressive for UCLA.

Our son was admitted to UCLA as a freshman. We are wondering about Bruins day. I’d like to attend, but he has an important event on the same day and is saying it’s not important. For those with experience, is it worth it to attend? For context, we have visited UCLA before, and he is set on attending.

You put down a preference. It’s a lottery.

Look on the campus map to see where each of the halls are. The more up north, the more walking you will have to do.

But I am also a little disappointed at the whole process. Gone are the days where college was meant for exploration. Now they all want you to say “why” and “why us” on your application AND show that you have done work towards your future major and career.

S24 did a bunch of math and computer classes at CC as well as worked in IT and fixes computers. That probably also made a huge difference in outcome.

As the parent of sophomore at UCLA, I can tell you that registering for courses has had a few challenges. UCLA usually has a priority order. For lower level courses, usually students do get in not maybe in the timeslot that would have been ideal for them. In some cases, I have heard that the student had to take a particular course the next quarter as they couldn’t get what they wanted. However, it was never the case that they could never register for a specific course. This is a challenge in any large sized public school in the US I suppose as I hear the same from many friends of mine, parents of sophomores in other public schools inside and outside of CA

We understand that you are very disappointed with the UCLA result, but you should not consider that anybody else who got in even with lesser (numerically) credentials as not deserving. The UC admissions process is a very complex one and there are many ways to skin the cat. There are many folks who get through on talent just not the numbers. It all depends on how the AO reads your application, hence essays make a big difference. I know many students who only got into UCLA (and Stanford in one case), but got rejected from all other Tier 1 and 2 UCs. UCS 17 or 18 way match can be looked at differently by different UCs. The main thing to take home is don’t get disappointed by specific UC or other college rejects. Its a gamble with certain odds. Your son will get through at another good place for sure.

15 DE Classes? Wow that is an insane no. Would you mind sharing what type of classes your son took and how he spaced it across 9-12? Scary if this is what your comp looks like fighting for a spot in CS/CSE these days.

starting summer after 8th he did journalism, followed by freshman comp, logical reasoning, python, C++, project management, business management, music, art, US Hist1, US Hst2, Algebra, Trig, Cal 1, Cal2, Java Script.

Luckily during covid, there as a lot of free time which is when he did most of the work. But 6-10 units a semester was pretty manageable.

We also selected a HS that didn’t have AP, so that was actually helpful with time management. I know AP/DE gets debated a lot, but as you can see from the UCLA AP list, you really do not get much credit reverent to Science Majors with AP, which I learned from when I was UG.

Edit: Also not spending a summer to study for the SAT freed up a lot of time as well.

Congrats to everyone accepted. A great way for students to decide if UCLA is a fit for them (which I hope they do!) is to speak with current students and hear from their stories. As such, if you PM me, I can give links to some UCLA Discord servers where current UCLA students and prospective students can chat. Also let me know your major so I can send a major-specific Discord server.

Thanks for sharing, its helpful to see the breakdown.
Even without AP, still impressive to take this many classes while in HS.
I also only look at AP as a necessary evil to be competitive for the college admission process, not for college credit.
One thing about DE Math at UCLA (and maybe science) was for Calc1/Calc2/Calc3+ if you have UC approved CC credit already, you dont have the option to retake unlike AP. We learned this from our advisor with our 2025 kid. This can be good and bad depending on the student, as CC classes are no subsitute for UCLA classes.

My daughter is a freshman at UCLA, and I am not at all impressed with the lower division math. I would DEFINITELY say it’s not an asset to be able to repeat the courses after doing AP. If your local CC is decent, I would do whatever I could to try to cover the classes there.

My daughter chose Applied Mathematics over Econ Business in hopes that it too was less saturated.

Both of the majors you mentioned are part of the the College of L&S. UCLA’s website says that the major chosen by the applicant is NOT considered for the admission review to the College of L&S. So unlikely then that choosing one over the other would have made a difference. This is a common misunderstanding that many applicants and even college review professionals make.

And both of them are listed as pre-majors, meaning your D will have to apply to enter the major.

To each their own. My kid was a math major and breezed thru all CC math classes

Being able to skip math 31A and 31B and go straight into 32A is going to help son a lot. 31A and 31B are generally the weeder classes for Physical Sciences. Personally I found 32A to be a lot easier than 31A/B myself when I was there because I learned that math from Physics. My brother who went to Cal for ME told me to get son out of the math sequence if possible. He didn’t find Cal Math Class “useful” for his ME classes. He earned whatever math he needed from the engineering class themselves, if that makes any sense.

Many people assume retaking calculus 1 and 2 is going to get them a higher grade, but remember, everyone is doing the same and you are graded on a curve.

That’s different if your kid likes math.

My kid hates math and anything to get thru ASAP is going to be helpful.

Hi
Do parents get email notification when a student gets accepted to UCLA?
