UCLA Reddit page is fairly active and the current students and alum on their could help provide additional insights.
Congrats my D24 also got into UCLA, neuroscience. From Bay area.
Congrats my D24 also admitted to UCLA neuroscience
Congratulations. My D24 is deciding between case western and UCLA.
My child is a first year at UCLA in the School of Engineering along with several of his roommates. He has managed to get all the classes needed in his major sequence thus far, including for the upcoming spring quarter (and besides one GE, he’s only scheduled to take major-specific classes this year). His little roommate group helps one another get popular classes by tracking and reserving ones they collectively weren’t able to fill during their initial registration slots. Students use an app called Coursicle to track course openings.
UCLA registration is a little unique with first and second pass. During first pass, each student can register for up to 10 credits (2, maybe 3 classes); the remainder of a student’s schedule is filled during second pass. This system gives each student an opportunity to register for at least some classes before everything fills up and makes to effort to make things more equitable. Freshman fall quarter registration is done at new student orientation and the 1st/2nd pass isn’t part of that experience.
I do appreciate that they save an equal percentage in each section of first year and transfer common courses. These are then released at new student orientation sessions throughout the summer. Students in the last session have just as much access to the “good” classes as freshmen who register at the first session in early summer. Based on the comments during the parents’ portion of the new student orientation, it sounded like the engineering kids actually had an easier time getting the required sequential classes than those trying to start in some other majors. The counselors were motivated to find them open classes because the engineering track is heavily sequential and one off quarter could potentially delay graduation.
Can you post the waitlist link?
I don’t know how they do it now, but when I was going thru this back in the 90s, there were 10 Freshman orientation sessions spread across the summer. It was 3 days/2 nights where they go over everything. I signed up for one of the later ones (something like session 9) and by the time it was my turn, most classes were already filled.
Also what I didn’t known then was most profs will open up the class and take pretty much everyone on the WL (not sure of that is still the case, YMMV) because they know a lot of people will drop after first week.
It’s definitely something I’m on the look out for in case S24 decides on a UC school.
Each New Student Orientation session reserves the same number of spots for popular freshman classes so students have the same chance at each orientation session to acquire their preferred classes whether it’s the beginning, middle, or end of the summer. My S23 was able to get all of his 1st choice classes attending a late July NSO
Are waitlisted students able to sign up for Bruins day?
I wouldn’t say ALL kids get off the waitlists for every course (and waitlists themselves are capped after a certain number), but it seems to be the case that many do. I currently have two students at two different UCs. At UCSD they use sort of a rule of thumb that if you are a number on the waitlist that is within 10% of the class number you have a decent chance to get in. My son at UCLA has had success using Coursicle to help notify about course openings. They all figure it out, but you have to be willing to pay attention and put the work in to get what you need.
You can try but they do ask for your application ID for registration so it may not let you. Please check back either way. Thank you.
Wasn’t your student accepted to UCSD? Both UCLA and UCSD’s admitted student days are on April 13. My suggestion would be to attend Triton Day at UCSD and visit UCLA on another day.
Edit to add: I see that your student also received an early invite to UCSB. Their admitted student day is also April 13.
You are right. 10% is still alot. But I didn’t know that as a freshman. And if it’s something really important, talking to the prof is generally helpful. I hope that is still the case now, compared to 30 years ago.
16 posts were split to a new thread: The UC GPA calculation and how are they used in the application process?
UCLA considers the unweighted, capped, and unrestricted fully weighted UC gpa. They used to report the freshman profile using the unrestricted fully weighted UC gpa which was a 4.4-4.73 for the middle 50%

Wow! Congratulations. My daughter was also accepted to UCLA (Applied Mathematics), early to UCSB (Regents scholar), and waiting on Berkeley. Has your kid made a decision amongst all of his great admits? My daughter is going BRUINS!
Hi!
He is waiting to hear back from Berkeley and UCSB College of Creative Studies and a few private schools, just yesterday said he was looking at UCLA’s Applied Math major.
As a mom, I am stunned at his results so far, we weren’t expecting all these acceptances, we did encourage him to cast a wide net as many extremely talented friends the year before were rejected everywhere, I am curious if the difference perhaps is those friends applied to Computer Science or Engineering, whereas my son decided on Math or Physics major, in the less impacted Colleges of Letters & Sciences programs.
If anyone got housing email from ucla?
There is written 4 years guarantee housing if we are first year application.
I never visited ucla .
We can choose any building or they choose for our students?
Can someone let me know?
