UCLA Class of 2028 Official Thread

Housing contract needs to be signed with $500 deposit yearly, nobody wants to live in tiny triple dorm for 4 years. Lol.

He doesn’t need to take the test if he received 5 on AP, he only needs to send AP scores once.

Does anyone know how to talk to an actual person on the admissions committee rather than an operator? I called twice regarding appeals and I got two very different responses so I don’t think I actually talked to an admissions individual and I’m just very anxious about the whole thing, I’ve checked previous years appeal forums but I learned now they don’t really apply the same due to this year being very different for all colleges :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry just realized this is the wrong thread LOL

Where should it be? We can move it?

The UCLA wl/ appeals thread  sorry I don’t really know how this website works at all :sob:

UW CIHS courses will transfer to UCLA and will not only satisfy the entry-level writing requirement, but should also excuse students from Writing I (English Comp 3). If this credit is not automatically applied you should petition the registrar.

Does anyone know how to access our ucla emails once we create them (the .edu one)? I created my email, but can’t seem to figure out how to log into gmail with it.

These are instructions my S24 used

Has anyone attended the New Parent Orientation in previous years? If yes, could you please shed some light on it, whether you derived any value from attending? Thank you

Received the flyer of New Parent Orientation by mail yesterday. It is one day, $85 session fee per adult, including breakfast and lunch. Reservation starts on 5/28 3pm. Same question, no sure we parents should attend or not.

I attended last year. I cannot say it was super informative nor did I learn anything important that you couldn’t figure out on the internet. A lot of it was to assuage concerns of parents but since I’m an alum, I’m pretty familiar with the campus and culture despite graduating long ago. You learn some interesting factoids but nothing crucial. Other than being surprised at the number of prefrosh premed (something like 33-40% start on this track), I cannot recall a single other piece of information learned that day.

Half the reason I went was because I had to pick up my S23 from his orientation anyway so I just made a day of it to reminisce about my youth.

We did not attend - instead our kid flew to campus with a couple of high school classmates to attend orientation (which was also an opportunity for them to learn to navigate travel to/from campus for the first time together.)

If the student has taken IB High Level Math AA and got 7 from the indicative score, does he still need to take the Math Diagnostic Test? thanks a lot.

Does anybody know about the ucla study abroad global program? What are the pros and cons of this program? Thank you

My son got a C in his dual enrolled community college class. Unfortunately, in math and he is admitted as a premathanatics major.
My son is telling me a single C is a nonissue.
I’m wondering-
He has option to add it to his high school transcript
Should he add it on? It will lower his gpa substantially as he has only 4.0 and higher otherwise.
He will be sending this grade to UCLA directly with his community college transcript.

Your son is right. In the short term that C is a non-issue, meaning:

  1. acceptance will not be rescinded over a C.

  2. Not on the HS transcript so he maintains his whatever GPA from HS (but as you know, this becomes as meaningful as his elementary school grades once you are in college).

  3. UCLA in getting the CC transcript, places a notation on its transcript about credit received from the (name of the CC) and that C grade does not show up.

My S24 tried to give me that same logic when he tried to not study for his Cal2 final last week.

BUT.

I have to tell him what and when that C “may” matter is when it’s time to apply to grad school. That’s when you need to submit all college transcripts. Can you get into med or law schools with Cs, sure. But I have to tell him why waste a C on a CC class just because he felt burnt out, when he may get more Cs in UG when some classes get really really hard.

Edit to say: before anyone who says just don’t send in that CC transcript when it’s time to apply to grad schools, that will not work. Not only is hiding a bad grade frown upon, the fact that the grade is transferred and now noted on the UCLA transcript will automatically prompt a request for that transcript.

Thanks for the info.

As far as I can tell, for his high school transcript, he can either add or not add this community college class?

Do you think it is better to add it or not?

I’m wondering if it’s better to add it on to the high school record, so it is complete, and not worry that the gpa drops a lot? Also, he did say on the UC application, and also maybe when he reported a spring class schedule change, that he was taking this math class at the local community college. But his counselor is saying that they will see he completed the class as listed as on his application when he sends in the community college transcript.

You don’t really need to add it to HS, unless he needs it to graduate.

Since he put the class down on application, UCLA will want to know he did complete the class. Submitting the transcript from CC will be sufficient.

You don’t need to add it to the high school transcript. UCLA will want every transcript sent to them for verification. We ended up sending three different CC transcripts and a high school transcript after my son was admitted. Plus they verify all AP scores you submitted.
