UCLA Class of 2029 Official Thread

Note this is for changing majors into most but not all engineering majors. It is 3.5 for Bioengineering and ChemE, 3.4 for EE, 3.0 for Civil and Environmental Engineering or Materials Science. See https://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/change-of-major/

That said, I would encourage prospective frosh that have an actual acceptance into an engineering major from any other university to go there instead.

19P is the most economical meal plan, but many students with 19P have unused meals by end of school year. You need to dine out several times (4-7 per week) for social events like club gathering, dating, or just want something different… So 14P is more flexible for us.

Just wondering if there is a facebook Class of UCLA 2029 for parents. Thanks.

I think the majority of students have 14p. Our S had it the past 2 years and he actually had swipes left over in part because he comes home 2 weekends per quarter and usually skips breakfast. He’s switching to 19p for this quarter to eat breakfast sometimes and because he swipes in friends a fair amount. It’s about an extra $110 or so per quarter.

I’m not sure he realized he could use it to get coffee + pastry. which might make it more economical if he can still use it on top of eating lunch.

I always suggest to most people to get the 14p unless you know your child will regularly eat breakfast.

There are two that are public. Don’t join those. The one with Chase as an admin is a scam. He runs several FB groups, including one for USC.

Your best bet is to join the main group and see if any other parents want to create a Class of 2029 group.

So mine says he eats eggs at Bruin Plate early morning before heading to classes. He eats dinner late in the evening. So during the day while on campus, he grabs a coffee with a pastry on the hill with swipes. It has worked out. Sometimes if he has extra swipes, he grabs something at the Study late.

Will students be alright without having a car? For instance, is it easy to get to Westwood or Westwood Village (my knowledge of Los Angeles is quite pathetic)? Will there be shuttle buses etc? Or is it walkable? Thanks.

Very walkable. Also, public transportation in LA is quite good, despite what most say. You can get from Westwood to Santa Monica with just 1 bus and go downtown with a bus to light rail transfer.

Thank you so much. Students will need to purchase a TAP card and pay for the rides? Or do UCLA students use their school ID to pay? Do they tell incoming freshmen these sort of things during orientation or is such info available online?

Westwood is walkable from campus; however LA is a very car dependent city. Public transportation is not the same as it is in other cities, I am not sure where you are from; be aware, especially at night. We live in the area and have had at least two scary incidents on public transportation (metro and bus). Pepper spray is a must!

UCLA provides TAP cards. You can either pick up the physical card or load it on to your phone (what most students do).

I’m actually not sure what they’ll say at orientation, because during my first year UCLA did not provide free public transportation.

Yes. No need for a car. Westwood is adjacent to the campus and walkable. Tap card is free. There is a free bus that takes kids to Santa Monica every Saturday. The bus stop is on campus in front of Luskin conference center. Also you can take a bus for free (Culver City line) to LAX. No need for shuttles.

Free in that it is included in the fees you pay on top of tuition, right?

Yes- something like $2 per quarter listed in fees on Bruin Bill

UCLA’s calendar says Dec 12 is the end off Q1. Does it mean the students can leave on Dec 13 (latest)? Do the dorms stay open during winter break?

Yes, that’s the last day of the quarter but students are often done before the last day. Won’t know for sure until they get their syllabi. I just did a quick search and they do stay open but it’s a seperate “program” with a fee.

My daughter just brought her car down to UCLA as a third year. She lives off campus and her apartment came with 2 spots for 6 girls. Four of them wanted their cars so they rotate quarters—two park on the street, then switch. She says it’s a hassle to park on the street bc of the street sweeping schedule but it’s doable. And she enjoys the freedom that having her car allows. She’s exploring LA much more on the weekends and she often drives when her clubs go camping in Yosemite or Joshua Tree or on retreats. It’s not necessary to have a car by any means—but if it’s possible, it seems to open up opportunities and something to think about in later years.
